Renault Cleared Of Emission Scandal

Earlier, French anti-fraud police raided Renault offices in relation to the emission scandal. Now, French energy minister, Segolene Royal has confirmed that test were carried out and no defect device or other emission cheating softwares were found. “There is no fraud at Renault. Shareholders and employees should be reassured,” she said. The levels of carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide were found to be within limits.

After the French anti-fraud police visited the French company, its share market fell by nearly a fifth. Employees confirmed that their computers had been temporarily confiscated. The investigations were done to check possible vehicle emissions violations.

In a statement issued by Renault, the company said that it was working with the French authorities. The French are retesting the emissions of 100 different cars and 25 of the 100 are Renault cars. Renault has a 25% market share in the country.

The tests are being carried out by French Homologation Authority mandated by the Ministry of Economy (UTAC) to ensure that no other manufacturer has installed the defect device. Even though no defect device was found, Renault’s share prices fell 21% wiping five billion Euro in value off. 20% of the company is owned by the French state.

Emissions of cars from every manufacturer has come under great scrutiny after Volkswagen’s emission scandal came to light. The German company installed a defect device to its diesel cars to reduce emissions while the car was being tested.

In India, Renault sells the Kwid, Pulse, Scala, Lodgy, Duster, Fluence and the Koleos. The range starts at INR 2.57 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 27.75 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The entry level Kwid hatchback has very high demand while the Duster compact SUV is selling in decent numbers. They are struggling to sell the other models.

Volkswagen would like to thank Horn for his contributions to the company during his tenure in the United States. “I want personally to say ‘thank you’ to Michael Horn for the great work he has done for the brand and with the dealers in the United States,” said Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen brand. “During his time in the U.S., Michael Horn built up a strong relationship with our national dealer body and showed exemplary leadership during difficult times for the brand,” he added.

Michael Horn joined Volkswagen in 1990 and became the head of Volkswagen USA in 2014. Prior to assuming this role, Horn handled many positions like Head of Volkswagen sales North West Europe, Head of sales and marketing luxury class vehicles, Head of sales for Europe, and Global Head of After Sales at Volkswagen AG (VW).

Horn has been insistent on staying on board as the CEO of Volkswagen USA in the aftermath of the ‘defeat device’ scandal when ay called for his head. A federal judge has given Volkswagen until 24th March to reach a settlement with the U.S authorities an vehicle recall.

VW has set aside €6.7bn to deal with the costs of recalling and fixing cars across the world with almost 11 million cars affected globally of which over 600,000 are in America.  According to authorities, the company could be slapped with a fine of over $20 billion.

Status Update: Volkswagen emissions solution in USA

Volkswagen just got a breather of 4 weeks as they have been granted time until 21st of April to come up with a solution in the emissions scandal.

The German company was given time until 24th of March to come up with a potential solution to rectify the doings of defeat device fitted to about 600,000 cars in the United States of America. Interestingly, statements made two weeks ago by officials with the California Air Resources Board, who told a legislative hearing in Sacramento that the cars might not be completely fixable because of technical problems.

San Francisco District Court Judge Charles Breyer however, sounded way more optimistic and was quoted saying, “I would hope by the 21st that as many [outstanding] issues as possible will be wrapped up.”

In a statement issued after the hearing, Volkswagen said it is “committed to resolving the U.S. regulatory investigation into the diesel emissions matter as quickly as possible and to implementing a solution for affected vehicles, as we work to earn back the trust of our customers and dealers and the public. We continue to make progress and are cooperating fully with the efforts undertaken by Judge Breyer, working through Director Mueller, to bring about a prompt and fair resolution of the U.S. civil litigation.”

The defeat device scandal came to light in September this year, and Volkswagen immediately agreed to the wrongdoing, stating about 11 million vehicles have the defeat device software installed globally. The “defeat device” software optimizes their engines to perform well during emissions testing. But out on the road, Volkswagen’s diesel cars have been spewing far more toxic emissions than regulations allow and are in violation of laws like the US Clean Air Act. Volkswagen faces enormous fines and lawsuits globally as a result. The first of lawsuits has been filed in Harris County, Texas for a whopping $100 million

Hyundai iONIQ: The global debut will present iONIQ in three variants. The newly-developed platform will available with full electric, plug-in petrol / electric hybrid, or petrol / electric hybrid powertrains. The engine will be 1.6-litre a 1.6-litre Kappa GDi naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 105 PS and 15.0 and 147 Nm of torque and a permanent magnet electric motor that generates 43.5 PS and 170 Nm of torque.
Jaguar F-Type SVR: It is the fastest production car by Jaguar. Anything more needed to say?  F-Type SVR is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 567 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 700 Nm of torque between 3,500 to 5,000 rpm. It is mated to an 8-speed Quickshift transmission and power is sent to all four wheels. The supercar accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in just 3.7 seconds. It will be available as a coupe as well as roadster. The coupe will reach speeds of 350kmph will the convertible will top out at a shade over 340kmph.
Koenigsegg Regera: The production version of Regera will be seen at Geneva and it will be interesting to see how it looks since the carmaker has said that the company has made over 3000 changes to the concept shown previously. The company plans to build only 80 specimens of the niche car, making it the highest volume modeltill date.

Lamborghini Centenario: Lamborghini Centenario LP 770-4 will be the fastest production Lamborghini ever with just 20 units to be built to celebrate the birth of founder Ferruccio Lamborghini.  It is expected to have a V-12 engine and all-wheel drive system with all the massive power helping it past the 100 kmph mark from a standstill in a mere 2.7 seconds with a top speed of 350 kmph. Reportedly, all the units have been sold even before the launch.

Mercedes C-Class cabriolet: The  most economical convertible from Mercedes Benz is expected to be launched at Geneva Motor Show. It is expected to come in a variety of engines for a 1.6-litre petrol mill to a 4.0-litre turbocharged unit in therange topping AMG variant. The 2017 Mercedes Benz C-Class Cabriolet will be up against the BMW 4-series cabriolet and the Audi A5 convertible internationally. Volvo V90: The latest station wagon from the Swedish manufacturer is based on an all-new SPA platform and will be available in hybrid form as well. The T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid will deliver around 410BHP and a pure electric range of around 50 kilometres. As usual, V90 will come with cutting-edge safety tech such as Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology, Large Animal Detection and Run-off Road Mitigation etc.
Ssangyong XLV:  The Korean carmaker will present the 7-seater variant of its Tivoli called as XLV. Tivoli XLV will carry a 1.6-litre mill producing 124bhp and 157 Nm of torque while the diesel motor makes 113bhp and 300 Nm of torque from a 1.6- litre oil burner. The engines will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. It will come with front-wheel drive as standard though a four-wheel-drive system will be optional.

Maserati Levante: The first ever SUV from Maserati will feature a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine or a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine. The powertrain details have not been made public as of now. It is expected to come equipped with 8-speed transmission and an all wheel drive system.

Nikolas studied at Cambridge University and London’s Imperial College and then moved to F1 in November 1992. He began his career with Benetton under Ross Brawn, who also recruited him to Ferrari in 1997. He then became chief aerodynamicist in 1998. Later, he moved to McLaren in 2004 and worked as chief engineer (aerodynamics) but soon became vehicle project director. After just 2 years with the British team, he returned to Ferrari as chief designer.

“I am very happy to be joining the Manor F1 team at this exciting time in its development,” Tombazis said. “The team has impressive plans and is investing in all the right areas to achieve its on-track ambitions, so I am very much looking forward to being part of that journey. The existing design team is already very strong and I look forward to working with a great group of people to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead to help us progress through the field over the next few seasons.”

McQuilliam added: “I am delighted to announce Nikolas in the position of Chief Aerodynamicist. Instead, to weaken McLaren, he asked Mercedes to sign-up the British driver. At that time, Horner felt that McLaren was the tougher team to beat.

“He was desperate to drive for the team. In 2012, he wanted to come and drive for us, but there was no way we could accommodate him while Sebastian was with us,” Horner said. “Then before he signed for Mercedes, he was very keen to drive for Red Bull for 2013. The McLaren had been very competitive in 2011 and 2012 and I thought it would probably be better for us for him to be at Mercedes than McLaren. So in the event of us not being able to sign him, I encouraged Niki Lauda to sign him to weaken McLaren – not envisaging that Mercedes would become the absolute powerhouse they are today.”

Hamilton left McLaren at the end of 2012 and since then the Woking based team has been going down. The 2015 season was one of their worst. Red Bull are also having a down trend. Meanwhile, Mercedes is dominating most of the races with Lewis Hamilton at the wheel. Of the last 38 races, only six have not been won by Hamilton or his team-mate, Nico Rosberg. He won the Driver’s championship for two consecutive seasons, in 2014 and 2015. During both the years, the team clinched the Constructors Championship by a huge margin to spare.

Ferrari’s sell for a lot.. an awful lot of money on any yardstick.. but you won’t believe the price tag on this one just auctioned. $17 million for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider which translates to roughly over 114 crores in Indian rupees.

Thi one is one of the only 56 ever made models and to top it off, it is the first model to exchange hands publically. This highly coveted Ferrariis the 22nd SWB California Spider built and one of only 37 covered-headlight examples produced.

The auction at  Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance made some high ticket sells but nothing beat the Gooding & Company auctioned Ferrari 250 GT.

“We are delighted with our auction results and are proud of the new auction records we have set, which demonstrates that there is a strong demand for high quality cars,” stated David Gooding, President of Gooding & Company. “The room was electric from the beginning and the crowd’s intensity only grew when Mr. Seinfeld joined Charlie and me on stage to present his stunning offerings.”

Other Ferrari’s that made news were the 1995 Ferrari F50 (sold for $2,310,000) and a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet (sold for $1,512,500).

The Autopilot function will be available overnight to over 60,000 vehicles that were manufactured since last September. The cars will be fitted with absolutely essential features like a front facing camera, forward radar, ultrasonic sensors all around the car and something that the company calls ‘High Precision Digital Maps’. The front facing camera has the capability to read most road signs, while the forward radar can see through during various weather conditions like rains, snow or even fog. The ultrasonic sensors help the car get information on other cars in its vicinity on the highways and the maps house pooled data on the number of lanes, curvature of the roads and even parking lots for that matter. All the above mentioned upgrades will cost a one-time price of $2,500 (Rs. 1.57 lakhs) in the U.S. and will also be offered on the upcoming Tesla Model X.

Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla Motors, said, “We still think of this as a public beta, so we want people to be quite careful with it at first. But it learns over time. The network of vehicles is constantly learning and as we release the software and more people enable Autopilot, the information about how to drive is uploaded to the network.” He also mentioned that the new technology is only limited to well-marked roads and dense traffic situations in the current update. The next update, that is version 7.1 will enable the Model S to drive along private driveways, park itself and close the garage door too. He said that they will eventually gain autonomy to eliminate driver control completely hinting that they are definitely working towards a fully autonomous model.

Toyota will not be showcasing the much awaited next generation of the Innova MPV and the Fortuner SUV during the next Indian Auto Expo that will be held in February next year.

The Innova and the Fortuner are very popular vehicles from the Japanese manufacturer. The Innova is one of the best-selling MPVs in India.  The Fortuner is very popular thanks to its butch looks and road presence. It outsells it’s competitors by a huge margin.

The next generation of the Innova is still awaiting its global debut. It will be based on Toyota’s IMV (Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle). It will come with more equipment and safety features. It will also have a new design. Spy pictures show that the Innova might have grown in length. It will be powered by a new range of GD engines. The engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission is also expected. The Innova will have its global debut sometime next year but it will reach showrooms only in 2017.

The next generation of the Fortuner was recently launched. It has been designed so that the SUV can easily do the school run and go off-roading at the same time. The butch SUV comes with LED headlights, LED tail lamps, LED daytime running lights and a rear spoiler. While the current shares its dashboard with the Innova, the next generation Fortuner gets an all new premium interior with a large touchscreen system and a temperature controlled compartment. The SUV will be powered by the new range of GD diesel engines. A 2.4-litre unit produces 174 bhp while a 2.8-litre unit produces 148 bhp. Transmission options will be a 6-speed manual and a new 6-speed automatic transmission. The SUV gets a host of new safety features as well. Toyota is working on vendor development so they will not launch the Fortuner in India in 2016. It will be launched only in 2017.

Both the Innova and the Fortuner are manufactured at the company’s Bidadi plant near Bangalore.

The suspension might be taken from the new Dawn convertible that was unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Dawn is the convertible version of the Wraith coupe.

The facelifted Wraith was seen testing in Germany and it is expected to be launched at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. It will go on sale at a later date before the end of the year.

The satellite-guided automatic transmission made its debut on the Wraith

The 4-seat coupe is powered by a twin-turbo V12 engine producing 624 bhp at 5600 rpm and 800 Nm of torque at 1500 rpm. It is mated to a GPS guided ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. It accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 4.4 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 250 kmph. The car weighs 2.5 tons. It achieves this impressive feat while the keeping the occupants surrounded in luxury and comfort.

In India, the Wraith has been priced at INR 5.28 crores (Ex-showroom, New Delhi). It competes against the Bentley Continental GT Coupe.

Elon Mosk, the CEO of Tesla has asked for restraint while using the autopilot mode, but people being people, always want to test limit of things!! The coast to coast journey could have been an ultimate test and in just four days time,  Alex Roy, Carl Reese and Deena Mastracci set off from Los Angeles with the destination being set as New York, which is 4,846 kilometers away in a Tesla Model S. To give you an idea, Srinagar to Kanyakumari distance is 3613 kilometers.   From Redondo Beach, California to Red Ball Garage in New York, the trio set off from point A at 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 18, Sunday and arrived at point B at 10:03 a.m. EST on Oct. 21.

The trio reached New York in record time of 57 hours and 48 minutes which included as the stoppages, even the time spent charging the vehicle. The three are veterans of record-setting transcontinental runs: In April, Reese and Mastracci set a record for the least time spent charging an EV while driving across the country. And Roy, a rally driver, set an unofficial “Cannonball Run” record in 2006, driving from New York to LA in just 31 hours and 4 minutes.

Roy said, “There were probably three or four moments where we were on autonomous mode at 145 km/h and hands off the wheel, if I hadn’t had my hands there, ready to take over, the car would have gone off the road and killed us. That’s my fault for setting a speed faster than the system’s capable of compensating,” stating that he didn’t think the system failed.

Reese said the car was on autopilot for 96 percent of the times mostly programmed to run at speeds of 140km/h.  The overall average speed was approximately 84km/h. “Deena and I have been planning this autonomous record for over 11 months. We knew we wanted to be the first group to make the cross-country attempt using the autonomous technology,” Reese said in a news release.

FIA details new F1 qualification rules

FIA has written down rules for the new qualifying format which will come in effect from the Formula1 Australian GP which is scheduled for 20th March.

The new F1 qualification rules are:

a) From 14.00 to 14.16 (Q1) all cars will be permitted on the track. Seven minutes after the start of the session the driver last in the classification will be eliminated and will no longer be timed, he must then return to the pit lane and may take no further part in the qualifying practice session.

The same procedure will then apply after 8m30s, 10m0s, 11m30s, 13m0s and 14m30s leaving sixteen cars eligible to continue.

At the end of the session all drivers on the track may complete the lap they are on and, once these final laps have been completed, the driver last in the classification may take no further part in the qualifying practice session. Lap times achieved by the fifteen remaining cars will then be deleted.

b) From 14.24 to 14.39 (Q2) the fifteen remaining cars will be permitted on the track.

Six minutes after the start of the session the driver last in the classification will be eliminated and will no longer be timed, he must then return to the pit lane and may take no further part in the qualifying practice session.

The same procedure will then apply after 7m30s, 9m0s, 10m30s, 12m0s and 13m30s leaving nine cars eligible to continue.

At the end of the session all drivers on the track may complete the lap they are on and, once these final laps have been completed, the driver last in the classification may take no further part in the qualifying practice session. Lap times achieved by the eight remaining cars will then be deleted.

c) From 14.46 to 15.00 (Q3) the eight remaining cars will be permitted on the track. Five minutes after the start of the session the driver last in the classification will be eliminated and will no longer be timed, he must then return to the pit lane and may take no further part in the qualifying practice session.

The same procedure will then apply after 6m30s, 8m0s, 9m30s, 11m0s and 12m30s leaving two cars eligible to continue. At the end of the session any driver on the track may complete the lap he is on and, once any final lap has been completed, the overall classification will be established.

The above procedure is based upon 22 cars being officially eligible to take part in the Event. If 24 cars are eligible eight will be excluded after Q1 and Q2, if 26 cars are eligible nine cars will be excluded after Q1 and Q2, and so on if fewer cars are eligible.

If necessary, the intervals between the sessions and eliminations will be adjusted to ensure Q3 remains unchanged.

Sebastian Vettel was the fastest man on the grid, beating the current world champion, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes by half a second. Hamilton however got the most laps, a massive 156 laps in the day, more than anyone else.

“It’s good to be back. The car has been great so far. It’s very similar to last year’s – which is a good thing, as it gives us a great foundation to work from. The key is to get as much mileage as possible in the short time we now have for testing and we’ve made a fantastic start,” said Hamilton.

Force India’s test driver Alfonso Celis managed to come in fifth behind Ricciardo for Red Bull and Bottas for Williams.

“I’m feeling very happy with how things went today,” said the young Mexican. “The start of the day was special when we launched the VJM09 and it was a big honour to be the first to drive the car. It was only my second day in a Formula One car, but I was able to enjoy the experience more than last time because I knew what to expect and I had a bit more confidence. We managed to work through the whole plan with good reliability. I could not think of a better way to start the season.”

Jenson Button came in sixth for McLaren-Honda in a relatively trouble-free day of testing. Carlos Sainz came in behind Button at the 7th place in the Torro Rosso while Marcus Ericsson finished eighth in Sauber which is the only team running on 2015 car. Romain Grosjean came in 10th for the Haas team and Joylon Palmer came in last for the Renault works team.

Romain Grosjean of the newly formed Haas GP team came in second, almost two seconds slower than Nico. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen completed 77 laps and managed the third spot with medium tyres. Kevin Magnussen came in 4th for the Renault works team and most importantly, clocked 111 laps after having faced trouble on day 1 & 2 of testing. Neco Rosberg completed the top 5.

Nico Hulkenberg said,  “A positive day for me and I’ve come away with some good first impressions as we continue to learn about this car. We tried quite a lot of things today and, although we need to do some more fine-tuning, it does feel like we are moving in the right direction. The important thing is that we are getting lots of laps under our belt at this early stage and we are able to start exploring different set-ups. Melbourne is not far away, but it feels like we are on schedule and days like this are very encouraging. You never know what the other teams are doing so we’re just focusing on ourselves and working hard.”

The bike can be mounted with panniers easily and has a kerb weight of 208 kgs. The 18.8-litre fuel tank gives the motorcycle a range of400 km.

Honda CX-02 is a tourer concept on showcase at the ongoing auto expo in Delhi. The company is tight-lipped about the numbers on the mechanical side of the bike. We expect it to be a 600cc motorcycle to tap into the budding tourers. The CX-01 which was shown at the last expo in 2014 was used as a template for the CB Hornet and it would be interesting to see what this one metamorphosises into.

Slovakia to get 1223km/h hyperloop, possibly by 2020

Dirk Ahlborn, chief executive officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), announced on Thursday that HTT has reached an agreement with the Slovakian government to explore building a local Hyperloop system. This transport system is capable of speeds of up to 760mph (1,223kph).

“Slovakia is a technological leader in the automotive, material science, and energy industries, many of the areas that are integral to the Hyperloop system,” said Ahlborn. “Having a European Hyperloop presence will incentivize collaboration and innovation within Slovakia and throughout Europe.”

HTT is exploring possibilities to develop a route connecting the Slovakian capital Bratislava with Vienna, the capital of Austria and the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Currently, Bratislava to Budapest via Vienna can take up to five hours by train. With hyperloop the time will come down to just eighteen  minutes.

Speaking at the announcement, Vazil Hudak, Slovakia’s minister of economy said: “Hyperloop in Europe would cut distances substantially and network cities in unprecedented ways. A transportation system of this kind would redefine the concept of commuting and boost cross-border cooperation in Europe. The expansion of Hyperloop will lead to an increased demand for the creation of new innovation hubs, in Slovakia and all over Europe.”

Hyperloop is a project of Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla Motorsand will require $200-$300 million for implementation for the European project which is expected to be completed by 2020. Elon Musk has asked other entrepreneurs to come forward and realise this dream since he is already occupied with Tesla and SpaceX.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport stands at 4600mm in length, has a width of 2173mm and a height of 1724mm. With 2741mm of wheelbase, the Discovery Sport demands a lot of attention and has tremendous road presence. Though it reminds you a lot of the Range Rover Evoque, the similarities in appearance end with the face. Yes, both the Evoque and the Discovery Sport, share the same platform too. The face gets the striking clamshell bonnet with ‘DISCOVERY’ written smartly in bold on it. Noteworthy here is that other models get the ‘LAND ROVER’ badging on the bonnet. So it’s the different badging that makes the Discovery stand out from the others. You have the double stage, Land Rover honeycomb mesh style grille in silver with the family Land Rover reflective oval badge on it. High mounted bumpers come with neatly integrated in-body flushed headlights. These have a catchy design with the round day-time running lights, while the bumpers get slim rectangular LED fog lamps in white glow. The front bumper gets some extra styling with the wide, blacked-out air dams and a silver finish skid plate integrated into it.

The side profile on the Discovery Sport is mostly flat, except for a sharp body line that runs across, mating the front fenders and the tail light across the door handles. The fenders get unpainted plastic cladding that comes handy while off-roading, as it acts as protection. They also get a mock air intake with black inserts placed on them. 235/60 R18 Pirelli Scorpion Verde tubeless tyres come mounted on split-spoke (9 spoke) silver alloys. The roofline slopes down towards the rear. The glass area is large and the windows come with blacked-out frames. The large rear quarter glass has a sharp angular shape to it. A neat reflective Land Rover oval logo is placed on the C-pillar. The D-pillar gets a glossy black body cladding that fuses the quarter glass and the rear windshield, giving a clean, round finish to the edges.

The back looks prominent with the ‘DISCOVERY’ badging and the rear windshield that is placed at an angle. The flushed tail lamps get neat and stylish, round LED stop-glow with multi reflector turn and reverse lights. A black body insert runs across horizontally just below the DISCOVERY badging, giving a strong design element to the boot lid and also making the vehicle look broader. The rear bumper gets black unpainted cladding and a silver skid plate, along with twin round exhausts in chrome on either sides. Strip reflectors are placed on the middle of the rear bumper.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE TD4 that we drove, comes with an all-glass, panoramic roof; this is a single piece, fixed glass roof that cannot be opened. A large rear spoiler placed on the rear windshield looks neat and makes the Discovery Sport appear longer than actually it is. Overall the exteriors of the Discovery Sport look nicely done, the vehicle demanding attention and deserving it too. The look and appearance is not very loud but at the same time, is very practical. Build quality is very good and so is the paint and finish.

The cabin on the Discovery Sport is again well laid-out and practical. The interiors do remind you of the interiors of other models, but then, it’s keeping in synergy with the Land Rover look. The dash comes in an all-black layout with metal inserts around the AC vents, centre-dash etc. The three spoke-steering too, comes with metal inserts and all the multi-function buttons on it. You also have the option of paddle shifters on the Discovery Sport. The steering can be adjusted manually for height and reach. The instrument cluster gets a twin pod design with a largish MFD screen in between these dials. You can toggle between different vehicle parameters on this MFD display. The speedo and RPM needle is in white and the markings behind the speed and RPM digits get a crystal-like, white sparkling glow on them.

The centre dash console comes with an 8-inch colour touchscreen display, that doubles up as the entertainment screen, GPS navigation display and reverse camera display accordingly. Noteworthy here is that the Discovery Sport gets the latest generation all new InControl UI operating system for the unit. We found this new system very easy to use. The display is bright and easy to read and can be viewed in sunlight. The system also features real-time centre differential and steering input info displayed on it. The centre dash gets thick aluminium strip inserts that flow on the sides, making it look tough and rugged. You get a dual zone climate control with AC vents in the front and rear. The climate control operates using the neat-looking, round rotary dials and also displays the temperature on the LCD placed in them.

Just under the climate control are the well-known Land Rover Terrain Response System control buttons. You also have an Eco mode button placed next to these. The centre console get the traditional motorised rotary drive shifter, as seen on all Jaguar and Land Rover cars. Generous use of real metal inserts in the cabin, gives a very good and sporty feel in here.Bottle holders and storage bins are neatly spread across the cabin and that also includes ample storage space under the centre armrest, which also houses the USB ports on the inside. The Discovery Sport gets all black leather upholstery, but you also have the option of getting a beige upholstery with a dual-coloured dash to go with it.

The driver’s seat comes with full electrical settings for reach, height, incline etc. Front seating is very comfortable and offers good under thigh support. The rear seats come with 40:60 split options. Lumbar support adjust is also available on the front seats. They also get three adjustable head rests and a foldable centre armrest. These seats offer excellent comfort and have loads of leg room. Three adults can be comfortably seated here with decent shoulder-room and good headroom. The rear AC vents are placed on the pillars, but we feel, ventilation can improve.

The boot area is a mammoth 981-litres, which can be further increased to literally a football field-sized 1698-litres by folding down the rear seats. There also is a 5+2 seat Discovery Sport variant available with two seats mounted in the boot area (thanks to the adoption of a compact multi-link rear suspension layout, engineers have managed to create space for a third row of seats). We will be reviewing that version soon. The one piece glass roof helps in getting in some extra light, making the cabin looking even larger. The build quality is good and the use of plastic, leather and switchgear ooze premiumness. Use of metal inserts on door pads and dash make you feel this cabin is built to last you for a lifetime. The Land Rover Discovery Sport feels a lot more upmarket and premium than the outgoing Freelander 2 and rightly so.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Engine, Gearbox and Suspension:

The Discovery Sport shares the engine technicalities with the Evoque. The engine on this one remains the same as the one on the Freelander 2. This is a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that is available in two states of tune. You get the Discovery Sport with 147bhp (400nm) and the 5+2 version with 187bhp (420nm) of tune on it. This 2179cc oil burner is mated to an all new 9-speed ZF automatic transmission.

We drove the 5-seater TD4 version of the Discovery Sport. This one’s very nicely balanced, with excellent drivability for city conditions and highway runs alike. You can let the engine go on its own in the normal drive mode. If you’re looking for some more fun, then we advise you to shift to the Sport mode. That’s when Land Rover wants you to have some more fun with the paddle shifters. You can play along with the nine gears you have on this car. Noteworthy here is that the Discovery Sport drove in a super calm manner, even at 100 kmph and in the 9th gear.

In busy traffic city runs the ZF transmission intelligently toggles up and down, giving you just the right shift at the right speed. On the highways this same transmission goes into a different mode altogether, giving it super slick shifts and keeping the power band just there when needed. The suspension feels and works really well. We did some good highway runs and off-road drives too and the suspension felt like butter. The cabin damping is good and refinement levels are decent.
