The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been unveiled in Detroit. The car will compete with the likes of the BMW 5-Series, Volvo S90 and Audi A6, and brings in many firsts for the German car maker in terms of technology.
The 2017 E-Class looks like the baby of the S-Class and C-Class, but is positioned higher than the latter in terms of hierarchy. The car has a luxurious air to it and looks completely different from the previous generation model. Mercedes has clearly given more importance to luxury this time around which has worked in its favour with the C-Class. The Luxury version of the car features the classic Mercedes radiator grille with the star on the hood, while the Sport models are identifiable by the sport radiator grille with a large Mercedes star as its centerpiece. The sides are accentuated with the long wheel base while the rear with the looks like all the new age Mercedes’.
The wheelbase of the car has grown by 2.6 inches (66 mm) to 115.7 inches (2,938 mm) which translates into even more legroom at the rear. The dashboard features a new 12.3-inch display with latest generation COMAND and a traditional gauge display besides it housed together to give a unified feeling. The armrest, seats and steering wheel have heating functions while the there is loads of high quality natural grain ash wood in all the right places. The mood lighting on the insides can now be had in 64 different shades and uses special energy saving LED technology. The rear seat also comes with a 40:20:40 split-seat configuration that largely adds to the practicality of the cabin. The car comes equipped with a Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system with 23 speakers that promise to conert the cabin into a concert hall.
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Classwill be powered by a brand new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that develops 238BHP of max power and 370Nm of torque. This will be the base petrol engine for the North American market and will be followed by a couple of 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder diesels and a 6-cylinder petrol too when launched in Summer 2016. All engines will be mated to a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic gearbox. The car also debuts the Air Body Control air suspension system that uses a multi-chamber setup which again is a first in class feature. On the safety front, the car comes loaded with tech like Pre-Safe, Attention Assist and Active Brake Assist. The optional Driver Assistance Package Plus adds some futuristic semi-autonomous driving featureslike Drive Pilot, Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Pre-Safe Plus. The range of new features in the new E-Class also includes Remote Parking Pilot and Car-to-X communication.
