Volkswagen will launch the Polo GTi in India in September this year. The performance hatchback was earlier spotted testing in the country. The car will be a 3-door hatchback and will be imported into India via the CBU (Completely Built-Up) route.
Michael Mayer, Director, VW Passenger Cars India said, “We want to keep it very pure; a hot hatch that offers performance, technology and comfort. I know that there is a compromise here, but people who buy this car, which is a fairly costly car, will have other cars in their garage to load five people on a regular basis”
To set it apart from the normal Polo, the GTi gets LED headlights with DRLs, honeycomb grille with GTI badging, sportier front bumper with bigger air intake, red brake calipers, dark red taillight cluster, side skirts, diffuser, rear spoiler and exposed twin exhaust tips. On the inside, it gets sports seats with part tartan upholstery, new steering wheel, contrast red stitching and aluminium pedals.
Powering the car will be a 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 192 bhp at 6,200 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,250 rpm. The engine maybe detuned to 189 bhp for the Indian market. It is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch DSG automatic gearbox. A 6-speed manual transmission with a higher torque output is also available but it is unlikely to be offered in India. The car accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 6.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 237 kmph. This will be the most powerful and fastest hatchback on sale in India.
Bringing a 3-door hatchback here is a bold move by the German company. It will be showcased at the Auto Expo next month and will go on sale in September. Prices are expected to be around the INR 20 lakhs (ex-showroom) mark.
