Maruti Suzuki launched the 1st generation Grand Vitara in India with a V6 petrol engine but the car did not do well due to the appalling fuel efficiency and lack of a premium feel. Then came the 2nd generation car which saw few buyers initially powered by the 2.4-litre petrol motor but couldn’t match up to its main rival the Honda CR-V. Suzuki globally launched the 3rd generation Vitara globally last year and the vehicle has been receiving a fairly good response. The car spotted here in the blue shade is somewhere in Oman pointing out to a launch there pretty soon.
The car looks pretty attractive from all angles just like the previous generation car did. The front gets a two-slated chrome grille, projector headlamps and LED day time running strips on either sides. The car has proper SUV proportions something like the Hyundai Creta or the upcoming Ssangyong Tivoli. The Vitara is offered with a 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engine options. Both the petrol and diesel produce 120PS of power but while the petrol churns out 156Nm of torque, the diesel develops a humongous 320Nm of max torque. It can be had with Suzuki’s AllGrip 4-wheel drive system with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The Vitara’s younger sibling, the Brezza subcompact SUV is all set to debut at the 2016 Auto Expo. This sub 4-metre SUV will be powered by similar engine options as the Baleno which means it will get a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel. There could be an automatic gearbox option too on the petrol just like the Baleno. The Brezza will be sold via Maruti Suzuki’s regular outlets unlike the Baleno which is only sold through NEXA. The Vitara SUV could also see its day of light in India but a lot will depend on the success of the Brezza from which the company has very high expectations.
