In a game changing move, Hyundai India has decided to plonk in a diesel engine into it’s hot selling hatchback, the i10s engine bay. The engine will displace just 800cc. Now don’t turn up your noses and snigger. Wait till you hear the power figures. This dimunitive three potter outputs a stunning 90Bhp of raw diesel power. Yes of course, it does have turbo doing duty. But so does the Swift and the Indica which share Fiat’s Multijet engine. But well, the multijet engine displaces all of 1248cc and delivers only 72 Bhp for all those cubic centimeters it has.

But, the Hyundai three potter delivers a specific output of more than 110 bhp/litre which puts it in a different league altogether. This certainly makes all the current diesel powerplants look ancient. This move obiously is Hyundai’s ploy to take on the Tata Indica Vista and the Maruti Suzuki Swift DDiS. And if they manage to price the diesel i10 at 5-5.5 lakhs, expect Hyundai to steal the collectie thunder of the Maruti-Tata combine. Say hello to the new hot hatch, the Hyundai i10 Diesel. ICB salutes Hyundai for bringing such a terrific diesel powerplant to India. Giant killer anybody?
