The Tata Tiago formerly called the Tata Zica had to undergo a rechristening ceremony due to the untimely outbreak of the Zika Virus. The deadly parasite has been haunting South America and Africa and is spreading rapidly throughout the world. The virus causes abnormal birth of babies which eventually results in death. The company had hence decided to rename the Zica hatchback to Tiago via interesting social media polls on Twitter and Facebook. The Tiago name was finally decided and now reports suggest that the new budget hatchback will be offered with a AMT automatic transmission on both petrol and diesel engines.

The AMT kit will piggyback the same 5-speed manual gearbox and promises to offer class leading fuel economy. This is also the third vehicle from Tata’s stable after the Zest AMT and Nano AMT to feature this technology. The Tata Tiago will be powered by a completely new set of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2-litre Revotron petrol and 1.2-litre Revotorq diesel develops 85PS and 77PS respectively.

The Tata Tiago will compete with the likes of the Maruti Celerio and Hyundai i10. The Maruti Celerio is the only other car in its segment to offer a AMT gearbox and was actually the car that started the AMT revolution. But Maruti offered the convenience only on the petrol variant and hence the Tiago will have a trump card in its favour as it will provide the high mileage of a diesel and the convenience of an automatic. The Tata Tiago AMT is expected to cost Rs. 40,000/- more than the equivalent petrol or diesel variant.
