Maruti Vitara Brezza to get a turbocharged petrol mill soon

Maruti Vitara Brezza has seen a significant number of bookings since its launch last week and it is currently offered only in diesel variant. The news now is that there will be a petrol variant indeed, but this time it will be the 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine.

Yes, a turbocharged petrol mill will be seen on the Maruti Vitara Brezza and also on the Baleno RS which will make its debut soon. This seems a logical reason as the 1.2-litre engine seen on other hatchback models does not suit the needs of this compact SUV. The engine develops just 83.1bhp and would make it an underpowered. The larger 1.4-litre unit does not fit in the small car criteria of the Indian government and would defeat the whole purpose of sub-compact SUV.

Thus, the only available option was the 1.0-litre turbocharged unit which has been in use by Suzuki in some overseas markets like Japan and Europe.  This 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol motor develops 110bhp of power and 170Nm of torque. In comparison,  1.2-litre, 4-cylinder VVT unit puts out only 83bhp and 115Nm of torque.

Initially, the engine will be completely imported and will only be assembled in India if it gets a good response. The turbo petrol thus most certainly cost more than the diesel variant which begins at Rs 6.9 lakh. The sticky point will be the mileage figures on the Boosterjet as it depends a lot on the driving style and the results could be far from those achieved in ideal test scenarios.

Vitara Brezza is currently powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine producing 88.5 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and power is sent to the front wheels. The SUV returns 24.3 kms to a litre of fuel which is the highest in its class.
