In a move that could prove catastrophic to the automotive industry, Delhi has stopped registering all new diesel powered cars. The order was given by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The renewal of registration of such vehicles more than 10 years old will also be stopped. The move will hit sales of diesel only cars in Delhi like the Mahindra SUVs and the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. The sales of premium luxury cars will also take a hit as a majority of them are diesel cars.

Along with this, the NGT has asked the centre and the state governments not to buy any diesel powered cars. They also said that that odd-even rule the Delhi government has set could backfire and it could force citizens to buy two cars.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar said, “In view of serious contribution of vehicular pollution to air quality of NCT Delhi, it is important that the government should take a serious view and a decision whether any diesel vehicle, old or new, should be registered in Delhi. As an interim measure and subject to hearing all parties in the case, we direct that diesel vehicles which are more than 10-year old and new diesel vehicles would not be registered in Delhi.”
The air pollution in Delhi have reached alarming levels
The pollution level in Delhi has reached alarming levels and the NGT has found out that diesel is the major cause. An urgent solution has to be found to reduce the level of pollution on Delhi roads but this is not the solution. Last November, they banned all vehicles which are older than 15 years from plying on the streets of the capital and earlier this month, they banned diesel vehicles which are more than years old.
It remains to be seen how the manufacturers, SIAM and the citizens react to this move, which will make life more difficult.
