Tata Motors was all set to launch the Zica hatchback in India last month but for some reason the company has been postponing its launch further. We take a look at the probable reason the company might be facing right now.

The Tata Zica (‘ZIppy CAr’) was marked as the turning point in the Indian car maker’s history, to begin with an all new innings in the budget hatchback segment. The company also came up with a brand new ad campaign along with brand ambassador Lionel Messi. We drove the car last month in Goaand came away pretty impressed with its all-rounder abilities. February 2016 has already come and two months after the drive we still don’t have any confirmed launch date. The reason for this delay could be in its name itself, ‘Zica’.

Apparently, Zica (spelled ‘Zika’) is also the name of a deadly virus that has caught a gripe on Latin America and is spreading at an alarming rate all over the world. The Zika virus is a mosquito borne pathogen, which is responsible for many neurological problems and birth defects. So much so that the World Health Organisation summoned a meeting to discuss the danger of the Zika Virus leading to a global health emergency. So Tata Motors could be considering to rename their hatchback and hence what we feel could be the reason for the delay.

Tata’s head of corporate communications, Minari Shah, told The Guardian, “The decision to name our car happened many months back when we could not have foreseen any of the recent events. In view of the recent developments, we are now evaluating the situation. We do not currently have a timeframe about when we will announce the decision.”

Bad timing? Unfortunately it is. Tata Motors are banking quite a lot on this new product and an outbreak like this was certainly not expected. We hope the company does not change the name of the Zica as people already know about the car and a few might be even waiting for it. Until then, we will have to wait and watch for Tata Motors to make any announcements regarding this situation. The Tata Zica will be powered by a brand new pair of 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines that promise class leading fuel efficiency. The car gets many firsts for its class like a brilliant sounding Harman audio system and in-car android apps support on the infotainment system. Read more about it here.
