Suzuki Swift and Dzire no longer needs an introduction in India and those are one of the most successful products in company’s history. Being based on same platform, if we combine the sales figures of both variants of Swift then it outsells Alto twins by far, even after being priced more than twice as that of the Alto. The current models still has enough steam left to outgun the modern day hatches, in India. But according to recent reports, the work on next generation Swift has already been kick-started and is codenamed as YSD. Tentatively, next gen Swift is set to be launched in the financial year 2018.

This new Swift will use an all-new platform, which will be lighter and more efficient. Quite obviously, it will spawn a Dzire variant of it as well, if current small car definition in India remains intact.  Lighter weight will help engineers to make this car meet stringent emission norms of future. As the current gen Swift/Dzire itself is slated to get the smart hybrid treatment, expect the new Swift to get more exhaustive and efficient hybrid drive system. We may get to see plug-in hybrid system on board as well in Europe at least, if not in India. Safety will be also be on top priority now when car’s biggest market – India, is mulling a plan to enforce the safety norms.

Engine line-up will also be completely revised and new car may drop all the existing engines. It is very likely that 1.0 liter Booster-jet engine will be on offer and there is also a chance of company plonking their very own 1.5 liter E15A diesel engine in new Swift. Just a wild speculation, Fiat might choose to introduce the next generation 1.3 liter Multijet 2 engine as well, with this car in India. Company’s upcoming Gujarat facility can host the production of these new cars. Development is quite in nascent stage yet and details available are as thin as air, thus let the time unwrap the story. Till than let’s enjoy the storm of speculations about this new Swift which will hit us shortly after the Tokyo Motor Show 2015.

Suzuki currently offers SHVS technology on Ciaz.
