India follows the BS-III norms for two-wheelers and BS-III and IV for passenger vehicles. Beginning April 1, 2016, all new models of two-wheelers need to comply with BS-IV norms. Since the Royal Enfield Himalayan has a BS-III compliant engine, it cannot be sold in New Delhi. However, it will be sold in adjacent Noida (Rs 1.79 lakh on-road) and Gurgaon (Rs 1.71 lakh on-road).
The Delhi transport department is not permitting registration of new models of two-wheelers that comply with Bharat Stage (BS) III emission norms as they pollute more than BS-VI norms. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) has raised the matter with the office of the transport commissioner in the Delhi government, but it did not yield any response. “The stoppage of registration of new models of BS-III two-wheelers is causing financial loss to manufacturers in the absence of any clarity from the transport department,” Siam said.
At the launch of the Himalayan today, Mr Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO, Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “The Royal Enfield Himalayan has been registered across all states in India and will be available across the country in a phased manner. In Delhi as of now the Himalayan is not being registered as the NGT decision came in last minute. It is available in NCR for test rides and bookings We are working with the authorities to resolve this situation along with several other manufacturers who are facing the same issue”
Speaking at the launch of the Himalayan, Mr Rudratej (Rudy) Singh, President Royal Enfield said, “ It allows both seasoned riders as well as enthusiasts to do more with just one motorcycle. The Himalayan serves the purpose of a seasoned rider and at the same time opens the roads (pun not intended) to many more people who will get the confidence that they can ride on and off the road less travelled, going beyond their day-to-day commuting needs.”
Royal Enfield Himalayan will be available in Bangalore for Rs. 184,316 (on-road), in Kolkata for Rs. 181,517 (on-road), in Chennai for Rs. 175,840 (on-road), in Hyderabad for Rs. 176,580 (on-road), in Pune for Rs. 170,362 (on-road) and in Navi Mumbai for Rs. 171,065 (on-road).
