The soon to be launched Maruti Vitara Brezza has tough competition lined up ahead of its official launch somewhere next month. Its main rivals are the Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra TUV300. We compare the Brezza to its nearest rivals to see if it has in it to become the segment leader.

Looks:
The Maruti Vitara Brezza is based on the XA Alpha concept that shown off at the 2012 and 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. When compared to the concept the Vitara Brezza looks plain boring but on its own is a smart looking car. Maruti is going to offer a contrasting roof colour on top variants which will definitely distinguish itself from rivals. It gets projector headlights, LED DRLs and side body plastic cladding to give that SUV feel. The Ford EcoSport on the other hand stayed true to the concept when it was launched way back in 2013. The car created quite a revolution in terms of design and made us believe that sub 4-metre vehicle need not be necessarily be ugly. The Mahindra TUV300 looks the most dated with its boxy design language. But what it lacks in design, it makes up in character and has the most road presence in this lot due to its tall stance.
Ford EcoSport Facelift
Engine and Gearbox:
The Maruti Vitara Brezza will be offered with only a diesel powerplant initially and the choice of engine is the tried and tested 1.3-litre 4-cylinder unit with 90PS of power on tap. The Ford EcoSport is offered with a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol that develops 125PS, a 1.5-litre petrol with 110PS and a 1.5-litre diesel that develops the most power here with 100PS. The Mahindra TUV300 is also powered by only a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder diesel that develops the least power here at 83PS. All the cars here come with a 5-speed manual gearbox, but it is only Mahindra who offers a AMT automatic drivetrain.

Safety:
You will be pleased to hear that the Maruti Vitara Brezza will be offered with a driver airbag as standard across range with an option of upgrading to dual airbags and ABS even on base variants. Mahindra has also given the option of dual airbags and ABS on base variants which is an excellent move in terms of safety. The Ford does not get these features on the base model which is a shame and the company had a good opportunity to add them in their recently updated model. On the contrary, the EcoSport is the only car here to offer 6 airbags on the top variants and if safety is your priority then you know what to look for; but at a price that is.

Verdict:
The Maruti Vitara Brezza looks like a promising product from the company which is known more for its hatchbacks. This compact SUV is definitely going to create long waiting lists and a buzz at Maruti dealerships. The Ford and the Mahindra are brilliant products but the Brezza might just take away that last piece of cake due to the ‘Maruti Suzuki’ peace of mind it will bring with it. All Maruti needs to do now is price is sensibly.
