General Motors, under its brand name Chevrolet, has had its ups and downs with its products here in India. They have seen some very good times and recently not so very good ones too. Their portfolio includes some neat, small cars, sedans, UVs and SUVs. The Chevrolet Captiva is its sole true blue SUV that has been on sale here since long. Now to make a strong statement and do some brand building, General Motors has recently introduced its biggest SUV, the Trailblazer that has replaced the Captiva. The SUV gets imported as a CBU into India from Thailand. We drive this mighty, full-sized SUV to get under its skin and find out how it actually is. Read on to know all on Chevrolet’s latest for India.

Food for thought – General Motors has been producing the Trailblazer since 2000 across North America, Thailand, United States and Brazil. This SUV is also sold under the GM brand name ‘Holden’ and has been rechristened as the ‘Colorado 7’ in a few countries. Currently, the Trailblazer is in its 2nd generation.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Exteriors:

Meaty, mighty and bulky. These are the initial impressions that you make as soon as you see the Chevrolet Trailblazer. Standing tall, wide and with a lot of dominance, this is a XXL-sized `truck’ as termed in the US. If you thought the Toyota Fortuner is huge, this beast beats that in terms of exterior dimensions. The overall length of this SUV is 4,878mm, while the width is 2,132mm. Standing at 1,851mm in height, this SUV has a ground clearance of 253mm, weighs 2068kgs and has an overall wheelbase of 2845mm.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Front

Chevrolet Trailblazer Front

Upfront, the Trailblazer gets a dominating face that comprises of a signature dual-port split grille with chrome inserts defining it, a thick bumper line bisecting the grille and the family Chevrolet bowtie logo placed on it. The SUV has a lot of height and the bonnet is placed at a good height. The projector headlights are flushed into the body and have the swept-back design look on them. The front bumper houses tiny round projector-type fog lamps that are placed in black surrounds with a dash of chrome lining that define them. The bonnet is large, wide and flat, with a few smooth body lines that run around here. The fenders are wide and tall, with a near flat design to them. There is a lot of distance between the tyres and the wheel arches as a result of the high ground clearance on this SUV.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Side

Chevrolet Trailblazer Side

The sides of the trailblazer are flat, except for a sharp body line that runs across the lower section of the sides, giving it some much needed styling. You have a `DURAMAX` logo in chrome on the front door, which is branding for the engine that the Trailblazer is powered by. The sides also get the required step board in black finish. This giant comes fitted with 265/60 R18 spec Bridgestone Dueler HT tyres on 6-spoke silver alloy. Wing mirrors come housed in chrome body housing and have turn indicators mounted on them. The windows get black frames, whereas the roof gets a roof-rail that makes the vehicle look still taller than it actually is. Door handles have chrome finish. The inclusion of keyless entry-exit feature is missed here.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Rear

Chevrolet Trailblazer Rear

Going towards the rear, this section gets a nice, rounded look due to the flushed third row glass area that mates well with the rear windshield, giving it a neat-gelled look. The tail section gets highlighted with trendy-looking multi-LED flushed in body tail lamps, a large tailgate and slim, wide rear bumpers adorned with stop lights. The rear windshield is large and extends itself to the entire width of the tailgate. A thick, chrome strip runs horizontally just above the number plate under the large bowtie Chevrolet logo. The spare wheel is mounted under the vehicle and the exposed exhaust enhances the macho SUV appeal of this vehicle. Doors open wide and the boot lid opens upwards. The Trailblazer is a CBU imported from Thailand, the fit and finish is good and so is the paint quality. The SUV looks impressive and very dominating in flesh.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interiors:

To step inside this tall-cabined Trailblazer, you need to use the step-board and hold the grab handle placed on the A-Pillar. The cabin gets a dual color theme with black and beige all around. The dashboard gets its top in black and the lower section in beige color. The instrument cluster looks a lot like the one on the Corvette with thick and deep dual bezel housing and soft blue, backlit instrumentation dials, along with a MFD display unit in the middle. The instrumentation is not modern, but nevertheless is practical and to the point. You get all the needed vital parameters flashing on the MFD display, including trip meters, fuel efficiency indicator, distance to empty, transmission shift indicator, drive mode, eco mode parameters etc. The steering is a three- spoke affair and has manual adjust for height. There is no adjust available for reach. You get all the multifunction control buttons for controlling multimedia and telephony placed on the steering.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interior Dashboard

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interior Dashboard

The center dash gets a 7 inch color LCD touchscreen display head unit. The multimedia unit on the Trailblazer is driven by Chevrolets `My Link’ OS that connects smartphones, integrates radio, can play pictures and also movies etc. from your devices wirelessly or via USB inputs. This screen also doubles up as your reverse camera when needed. You can also get your smartphone notifications, read or compose messages etc. through `My Link’. The center dash gets a neat-looking housing finished in glossy, piano black finish. The climate control is a round design unit that reminds you of the one seen on the Nissan Sunny. You get closable storage space on top of the dash and very useful twin opening glove boxes on the Trailblazer. The dash gets sliding can holders on the extreme corners. There is a neat and conveniently placed storage space just below the steering too, which can fit in your mobile phone or purse etc.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interior Mylink Infotainment System

The auto transmission shifter is the conventional-shaped one with chrome and leather wrapping on it. The glossy piano black surrounds continue on the center console along with storage space, can holders and a closable storage bin with a center armrest on it. The seats come in beige leather upholstery. The driver’s seat gets electrical adjust for height, reach and backrest, while the front passenger seat comes with manual adjust. Seating in the front is very comfortable with generous amount of space for leg and head room. The seats offer good support and seating position. Middle row seats are 40:60 split-folding ones with integrated center armrest on them. Seating here offers you lots of leg and head room.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interior Front Seat

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interior Front Seat

One of the best middle row seats in the segment are on this one. The only thing missing is the adjust to set the back of the seat. The middle row seats can be folded in the tumble-down style, leading easy access to the third row seats. The third row can seat 2 adults with decent amount of leg and head room. These seats can fold fully down into the floor in 50-50 split style. With the third row seats folded up, you get 205 liters of boot space which can be further extended to a mammoth 1,830 liters of luggage space with the third row seats folded down when needed. You get AC vents for the entire front, middle and third row seats and also an individual fan speed control for the middle and last row.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interior Rear Seat

The interiors on the Chevrolet Trailblazer may lack some modernities and snazzy gadgets, but nevertheless what makes this stand out is the amount of cabin space, practicality and comfort. Build quality on the cabin is pretty good, fit and finish and switchgear is of high standards and the `My Link’ integrated system is fun to use. We sorely missed the inclusion of a GPS unit in here.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Engine, Transmission and Drive:

Powering the Chevrolet Trailblazer is a 2.8 liter diesel engine. This engine hails from the Duramax family of Chevrolet engines and hits out 200PS of peak power with a mammoth torque of 500Nm. These power figures are slightly more than the closest rival, the Toyota Fortuner, that has 169PS of power and 360Nm of torque from its larger (3.0L) Japanese engine.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Engine Bay

Chevrolet Trailblazer Engine Bay

This 2.8L Duramax engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission (the Fortuner comes with 5-speed AT transmission). Though there is a 4×4 version of the Trailblazer in the overseas market, General Motors has gone with the 2WD version only for India. Start the meaty engine and you instantly notice that this motor is rev-happy. Shift to the drive mode and you get the 500Nm of torque to play with. It surges ahead like a locomotive with good punchy power at low rpm, making it a tireless 2-tonner to drive in the city. The car feels agile and nimble, and the available power across the rpm helps in your overtake maneuver whenever needed. The steering feedback is heavy as with these big SUVs and a true blue SUV lover will feel at home here.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Front Three Quarter

Chevrolet Trailblazer Front Three Quarter

Seating position is commanding, making you feel invincible while in the driver’s seat. With its class-leading ground clearance of 253mm, the Trailblazer is happy to go over any and every thing that you want it to, be it bad roads, deep pot holes, huge speed breakers etc. The body on ladder architecture makes the ride quality typical SUV style. The suspension setup on this beast is tuned on the softer side and more for comfort. Jerks and bumps from the road are all nicely ironed out, partly also due to the 18 inch wheels. The 6-speed automatic transmission is quick and shifts are smooth. You also have the option of driving in the tip-tronic shift mode if you want to control the shifts.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Rear Three Quarter

Chevrolet Trailblazer Rear Three Quarter

The NVH (Noise Vibrations Harshness) in the cabin is good with huge amount of sound damping available in this cabin. The ladder on frame setup does tend to give the ride some amount of body roll, but then that is part of the package on this SUV.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Logo

Chevrolet Trailblazer Safety:

The Chevrolet Trailblazer comes equipped with front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, panic-braking assist, traction control with stability program and hill descent control as standard equipment. This SUV is only available in the fully loaded LTZ variant so all the goodies come as a part of the equipment by default.

Chevrolet Trailblazer Interior Handle

Chevrolet Trailblazer Verdict:

The Trailblazer replaces the bestseller SUV from GM, the Captiva. This SUV is larger, bolder and meaner-looking than the one it replaces. You don’t get a manual version or a 4×4 version, but then this is a CBU unit with its USP being more space, more power than its closest rivals, the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. Also note that the all new 2016 models of both the Fortuner and Endeavour are just around the corner. What gives the Trailblazer an upper hand over its rivals is the extra power that the engine makes along with the extra dimensions and space that it has to offer and its beastly, rugged looks. The Chevrolet Trailblazer 4×2 Automatic LTZ is priced at Rs. 26.4Lakh ex- showroom Delhi.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. has been churning out some big-selling motorcycles and scooters in India for many years now. The Activa has become a household name across the country and has been the best-selling two wheeler in India for some time now. The Honda Unicorn 150 that was launched in 2005 also has been a benchmark in its segment for long. On the other hand, the Hornet motorcycle model from Honda has also been around for a while and has a huge fan following in its class. Honda is now counter-attacking the onslaught that the Unicorn has been receiving lately from arch rivals, namely the Suzuki Gixxer and the Yamaha FZS, by using the Hornet branding on its latest 160cc motorcycle in India. We rode Honda’s brand new motorcycle for India – the CB Hornet 160R, in Goa to get you this Exclusive First Ride Review report.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Side

Honda CB Hornet 160R Design and Styling:

Aggressive, angular and catchy. This is what comes to mind when you see the CB Hornet 160R for the first time. The motorcycle looks very stylish in flesh and the design language on it goes with its punch line ‘Raw-Real-Ripped’. On the front end you have a sharp-looking triangular-shaped headlight that’s housed in a bikini body fairing in body color and matte black housing. This aggressive face gets complemented with the sharp-looking slim clear lens turn indicators that make the face look brutish. Going below, you have the front telescopic suspension in glossy black finish surrounded by a meaty dual-color front mud guard. The CB Hornet 160R sports 5-spoke split alloys in matt black finish. The front end gets neat looking Nissin 276mm petal disc brakes.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Front

The instrument cluster that this brute gets is a wide screen unit, a full LCD screen display that reads out the engine RPM on the top, fuel on the left, speedo in the center and the trip meters along with a clock on the right. This is a very classy-looking typical Honda styled instrument cluster, with a soft yellow backlight and clear black digits flashing on it. The CB Hornet gets a semi-flat handle bar, calling this semi-flat because this is not a split handle nor is it the conventional high ‘U’ design one. This handle bar comes in silver finish instead of the regular chrome finish ones. The control buttons feel and look of good quality and ergonomics. The only thing missed here is the Engine Kill Switch (EKS). Now the EKS is a boon at traffic signals etc. and we hope Honda implements it on this machine sometime soon. The handle comes with the bar end weights. Rearview mirrors come in black housing and are angular in design keeping with the overall design language.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Instrument Cluster

The fuel tank on the CB Hornet is easily one of the highlights of this trendy-looking motorcycle. What makes it different in styling is its sharp angular flat lines that define it and also the forward leaning tank shrouds that come fitted on to it. The tank shrouds come in body color with a nice shiny Honda Wing logo placed on both sides. Noteworthy here is that this tank shroud is not a bolt-on or screw affair but is a unified part of the tank assembly. The tank also gets complemented with a carbon patterned tank cover on the top that gives an extra design and style appeal to the motorcycle. The fuel–lid is a flat aircraft style unit that is flush in line with the tank panel. The undersection of the tank continues with the carbon pattern body panel that goes back till the rider footrest assembly.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Fuel Tank

The CB Hornet comes with a unified seat with a slight upsweep towards the tail. A bazooka-styled exhaust unit adds a lot of glamour to the profile. The tail section is in silver-black color and remains the same color with all body color options. The highlight on the tail is a unique ‘X’-style tail lamp that comes with LED glow and illuminates flashing the ‘X’. You get a flat and wide split rear grab-rail in matte silver color and the extended type rear mud guard in angular design. Like the front, the CB Hornet gets rear petal-shape 220mm disc brakes. The rear brake is a CBS unit (combi – brake system) where when the rear brake is applied, the front brake also gets applied, helping in stopping the motorcycle in a much more even and balanced way. The rear suspension is taken care of by the tried and trusted mono-shock unit. The saree guard on the CB Hornet has been cleverly disguised with a black fiber cladding that makes it look as an extra style element here. This is noteworthy because saree guards on many motorcycles are a bit of an eye sore as they don’t gel with the overall motorcycle and many a times spoil its appearance. The CB Hornet 160R rides on MRF Nylogrip Zapper S1 100/80-17 tubeless tyres on the front and 140/70-17 sized broad profile tubeless tyres at the rear.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Rear

Overall, the styling on the CB Hornet 160R is radical, trendy and very much like the current breed of Honda motorcycles of larger engine capacity that it sells globally. The motorcycle looks very stylish with its sharp design. The build quality is typical Honda of high quality. The CB Hornet 160R feels premium and Honda has got everything correctly in place on it. It may be the unique tank with unified tank shrouds, the X glow LED tail lamp, the futuristic-styled instrument cluster, silver-black tail or the carbon pattern cover on the tank and body panels. This motorcycle definitely has a lot of oomph to it.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Engine, Ride and Performance:

The CB Hornet 160R has its engine based on the same 162.71cc engine that powers the Unicorn 160, what Honda has done is they have tuned this motor and given it slightly more power and torque for better performance for the CB Hornet. This 162.71cc single cylinder air-cooled SI engine makes 15.8PS at 8,500RPM and generates 14.76Nm of torque at 6,500RPM, mated to a 5-speed gearbox. If you compare this with the Unicorn’s engine specs, where it makes 14.7PS at 8,000RPM and generates 14.61Nm at 6,000RPM, there’s where the power difference lies. This engine in its fresh avatar now becomes India’s 1st two wheeler engine that is BS-4 norms compliant.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Engine

Hop on the Hornet and the first thing you notice is the comfortable seating posture that this bike has to offer. The seat has good cushioning and is at a perfect height from the ground level for an adult of average height to feel very comfortable with the feet resting perfectly on the slightly raised and pushed back footrest. The handle bar, as mentioned earlier, is well-designed and is at a comfortable distance at all positions. Start the engine and you hear a very refined engine note, rev it and the note gets a bit heavy but still sounds very refined. Honda is known for its mastery in engine technology and on the CB Hornet too gets benefit of this wizardry.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Exhaustpipe

With a kerb weight of 142Kgs, the CB Hornet 160R feels light, mainly due to the ergonomics on it. This aids a lot when maneuvering it through busy roads or pushing it into tight spaces. All Honda motorcycles are very good to handle and the CB Hornet 160R gets added to this list. The gear shifts are sharp and precisely aided by the light clutch. Touching the 100Km/hr mark the motorcycle feels planted and steady, the broad profile tyre at the rear goes a long way in helping it to stay this way. You also have the CBS dual disc brakes that work flawlessly, offering just the near perfect bite to the braking.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Rear

The top speed mentioned on the official Hornet brochure is 110Km/hr. The mono-shock suspension at the rear is also something that Honda should be proud of. This is one of the better suspension setups that you can get in this segment to handle the bumps and bad roads. As with all Honda engines, this engine also comes with the HET (Honda Eco Technology) which is what gives it a mix of sporty performance and good fuel efficiency.

Honda CB Hornet 160R Rear

Honda CB Hornet 160R Verdict:

We had a very short ride on this machine, but it did not fail to impress us. The Hornet has all the typical genetic qualities that Honda is known for. The styling is very trendy and we give a big thumbs up for the ergonomics that it has to offer. The 160cc engine feels amazingly refined with good power and this is a very sweet handler. Launched at Rs. 79,900/- for the front disc version and Rs. 84,400/- (Prices Ex-showroom, Delhi) for the dual disc CBS version, the Honda CB Hornet 160R is worth a buy if you are looking out for a Premium Commuter Motorcycle.

Honda CBR 650F Looks:

First look at the Honda CBR 650F and you begin to like the motorcycle. It’s got the right amount of style, not being loud like a few other rival models in this segment are. The red and white CBR 650F that we tested has just the right ratio of proportion and styling. It comes with a ‘V’ shaped sharp-edged headlight, which is a single lens headlight with twin DRL (day time running lights) on it. You have the transparent ‘V’ design visor, which is a fixed type visor and is large in size but suits the front end of this motorcycle nicely. The rear view mirrors come mounted on the fairing on the sides of the headlight. These stalk-type mirrors are in matte black finish. We think body-colored ones would have looked a lot better, but then you always have an option of fitting aftermarket ones. You have the typical sports bike type bikini mud guards in the front, hugging the 5 spoke aluminium cast alloys with 120/70 R17 spec Dunlop Sportmax tubeless tyres.

Honda CBR 650F Front Three Quarter

The front gets 320mm twin double petal disc brakes with ABS from Nissin. The front fork is regular type and not the upside-down one. The fork gets matte black finish on it to go with the alloys. The body fairing in dual color (red-white) is well designed and looks sharp, extending itself on the engine area. It covers a part of the engine area while some part is left open. The engine comes in special black color and you also can see four exhaust pipes that head out from the cylinders and merge into one unified main exhaust outlet which Honda calls the 4-2-1 Sporty exhaust. The exhaust comes in matte silver finish and is designed keeping in mind the best aerodynamics. The fuel tank capacity on this motorcycle is 17 liters and a large muscular-looking tank neatly merges with the body fairing at the extreme end.

Honda CBR 650F Instrument Cluster Honda CBR 650F Instrument Cluster

Honda CBR 650F Instrument Cluster

The CBR 650F comes with a three piece handle bar which is not very flat but is at a pretty comfortable height and angle. For the instrumentation you get a twin pod LCD display unit on each side, with speedo and RPM reading on the left, and fuel, time, trip and consumption readings on the right pod. This bike also comes with the patented Honda HISS (Honda Ignition Security System) that electronically disables the starting of the engine in an event of theft. You get a single ‘Banana’ seat as it is called, this being a sport tourer unlike other sports bikes that come with split seats.

Honda CBR 650F Fuel Tank Honda CBR 650F Fuel Tank

Honda CBR 650F Fuel Tank

The motorcycle comes with adjustable monoshock suspension with 7 stage spring load adjust at the rear with a very stylish looking unibody swing arm in silver finish. The rear section gets a neat looking LED tail lamp that’s housed in the extended slim mud guard. Due to RTO norms all motorcycles sold in India need to be fitted with a saree guard, with the CBR getting a very well designed and neatly integrated one, one of the best we have seen on large capacity motorcycles. The rear tyre is 180/55 R17 tubeless ZR Sportmax Dunlop mounted on 5 spoke aluminium alloys. The rear comes with a single 240mm Nissin petal disc brake with ABS as standard.

Honda CBR 650F Side Honda CBR 650F Side

Honda CBR 650F Side

The Honda CBR 650F has a dash of aggression and a lot of sportiness in its design, with the fit and finish is very good on this CKD. The switchgear, other plastic panels etc. feel upmarket. The design is accentuated with the racing graphics across the fairing and the massive rear tyre that stares back at you make this a very smart-looking sports touring motorcycle.

Honda CBR 650F Engine, Ride and Performance:

The Honda CBR 650F comes with a Twin-Spar steel frame chassis. Powered by a liquid cooled inline-four 648.72cc engine that is fed by the well known Honda PGM-FI Program Automatic Enrichment Circuit. This inline 4-cylinder engine makes 85.3BHP of peak power at 11,000RPM and pumps out 63Nm of peak torque at 8,000RPM. This engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Start the engine and you instantly notice the typical smooth and refined inline-4 engine note. This is a typical Honda engine with refinement levels being very high. The inline-4 engine is a personal favorite, and Honda is one of the best makers of these engines. The seating position is not extreme as on sports or pure sports, you can reach the handle bar easily and the foot pegs fall to your feet with ease. Seat height is at 810mm which is perfect for Indian riders of average heights. You are seated at a pretty comfortable angle and your knees hug the fuel tank rather well with you blending aerodynamically with the overall motorcycle. The exhaust note is highly refined but could be a bit quieter, but then you can fit one of those aftermarket exhausts to enhance the sound effects to your liking.

Honda CBR 650F Rear Suspension Honda CBR 650F Rear Suspension

Honda CBR 650F Rear Suspension

There is a lot of refinement felt in the power delivery and the 6-speed transmission feels very positive with its shifts. Even at low speeds, the engine feels very attentive. Hit the highway and you reach speeds of 140-150Km/hr with maximum ease, with the refinement levels being very high at these speeds too. Typical Honda handling, that’s when you realize the benefit of the patented Honda Twin-Spar steel frame chassis. The bike never feels out of breath and is always ready to be pushed further. The motorcycle feels planted at all times and also feels surefooted due to the ABS brakes that do a good job at bringing this 215Kg motorcycle to halt with utmost ease and confidence.

Honda CBR 650F Front Brakes Honda CBR 650F Front Brakes

Honda CBR 650F Front Brakes

The suspension on the CBR 650F has been tuned on the softer side offering a mix of sporty and comfort ride quality at all times. You can go over small patches of bad roads or pot holes with decent ease. The pillion sits at a much taller position and our pillion on the test ride was comfortable at all times. The engine redlines at 11,000RPM and the bike feels highly refined even while it’s being redlined. You can effortlessly cross the 200Km/hr speed mark with the engine running softly at these high speeds too. The throttle response is buttery crisp and the motorcycle is capable of returning an overall fuel economy of 24Km/L even when ridden fast.
