Mercedes-Benz has imported one unit of their flagship GLS SUV into India for homologation. The car imported is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine.
Initially, only the diesel will be launched
The new GLS is the facelifted version of the GL-Class SUV and according to the company’s new nomenclature, it is based on the S-Class sedan. The new car gets new front grille, new headlights, new tail lights and new bumpers that keeps it in sync with the design of the new generation of Mercedes-Benz cars. On the inside, it gets a new infotainment system which is floating on the dashboard.
The SUV will come with the latest in safety features. These will include forward collision warning with automatic braking and attention assistance that can detect drowsy driving, blind spot monitoring, active lane-keep assist and cross-traffic detection, Magic Vision Control, Lane Keep Assist, and Distronic Plus cruise control system with Steering Assist semi-autonomous mode.
The GLS is one of the most luxurious SUVs in the market
The 3.0-litre V6 diesel in the GLS350 CDI produces 255 bhp and 617 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and power is sent to all four wheels. The GLS63 AMG, which is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 engine producing 577 bhp and 760 Nm of torque, will also be launched in India at a later stage.
The Mercedes-Benz GLS will be launched in India during the second half of the year and it will compete against the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Volvo XC90 and the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The SUV might be brought in as CKD units and will be assembled here. Prices will be similar to the current car. The diesel SUV has been priced at INR 77.50 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) while the AMG variant costs INR 1.75 crores (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
