Chevrolet Shuts Down Nearly 60 Showrooms Due To Low Demand

Chevrolet’s latest sales figure is very disappointing.

Chevrolet’s latest sales figure is very disappointing. The problems for General Motors continue. First it was Daewoo and then it was Opel. Now it’s Chevrolet’s turn.

The Tavera is the only Chevrolet vehicle that is selling in decent numbers due to demand from cab operators

The American automaker sold 19,299 units from April – September this year. That comes to around 15 vehicles per dealership during this period. It is not feasible for dealerships to continue operations with low sales figures. Some have even shut shop while the others have cut down on the operations. Earlier this year, Chevrolet had 280 dealerships but now only 223 are operational. There are 253 service outlets available. We can see many dealerships shut shop in front of our very eyes. For example, South Bangalore has seen the loss of two showrooms in just a few months. Bangalore now has only 5 Chevrolet showrooms in the city and only one in South Bangalore.

General Motors will not be expanding their dealer network. Instead, they plan to improve the customer service. The dealer’s margins have been increased to industry best standards. The company announced that is investing INR 6400 crores and will be launching 10 new vehicles. The first of these was the Trailblazer. Chevrolet is more concerned about its long term operations in the Indian market.

The Trailblazer has just been launched and it remains to be seen how it performs

The company’s current line-up consists of the Spark, Beat, Sail, Sail hatchback, Enjoy, Tavera, Cruze, Captiva and the Trailblazer. Most of the cars are not doing well and they are struggling to move vehicles. Only the Tavera is selling in decent numbers because of demand from cab operators. The Trailblazer has just been launched and it is to be seen how it performs. I can expect to sell a few of units but sales will be limited due to a lack of manual transmission and due to the fact that only one variant is available.

Prices start from INR 3.61 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) for the Spark hatchback and goes up to INR 26.40 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) for the Trailblazer SUV.

The list of upcoming cars from the company include the Spin MPV, next generation Cruze and the next generation Beat.
