Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has confirmed at the ongoing New York International Auto Show that there will be a crossover and a compact sedan based on the CMF-A platform, on which the Renault Kwid hatchback is based. Back in 2013, he said that the platform is for the most affordable cars in the market. “Obviously, we’re going to have a crossover, we’re going to have sedans, we’re going to have things like this (CMF-A platform-based small cars), because there is an appeal for India, and this is not only about India, this is about all emerging markets”, Mr. Ghosn said.

The Renault Kwid hatchback is based on the CMF-A platform

The compact sedan will be a sub-4 metre car that could compete with the Tata Zest, Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze and the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire or the upcoming Tata Kite 5 sedan. The crossover will also be a sub-4 metre vehicle that could compete with the Mahindra TUV 300, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Ford Ecosport or the Mahindra KUV 100 or the upcoming  Maruti Suzuki Ignis.

The Kwid hatchback is powered by a 799 cc, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 53 bhp and 72 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and power is sent to the front wheels. The hatchback weighs just 669 kgs. This allows it to return an efficiency of 25.17 kms to a litre of fuel. The French manufacturer will soon launch the Renault Kwid 1.0 SCe, which has a more powerful and bigger 1.0-litre engine, and the Renault Kwid Easy-R AMT, which is equipped with a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT).

CMF stands from Common Module Family

It starts at INR 2.60 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 3.64 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). It competes against the Hyundai Eon, Tata Nano GenX and the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800.
