Earlier, in December 2015, the Supreme Court banned registration of diesel cars which are more than 2,000cc in Delhi.
Mahindra has launched the Scorpio and the XUV 500 with a 1.99-litre diesel enginein Delhi.
which are more than 2,000cc in Delhi. This meant that the Scorpio and the XUV 500 could not be sold in the national capital as they were powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. The following month, Mahindra announced that they would launch a 1.99-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine for the two SUVs. The engine has been finally launched and it is a downsized version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. The larger engine continues to power the two SUVs in other parts of the country.
Mahindra Scorpio
In the Scorpio, it produces 120 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. The power output is the same as the larger engine. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. In the XUV 500, it produces 140 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The torque has gone down by 10 Nm. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. AWD and an automatic transmission are not available currently with this downsized engine. The fuel efficiency figures for the new engine have not been announced.
The ban on the larger diesel engine is expected to end on the 31st of this month. But if the government decides to continue, then Mahindra need not worry. The smaller engines are now available in the national capital region. It might soon be available in other parts of the country as well.
Mahindra XUV 500
The Mahindra Scorpio starts at INR 9.67 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 12.75 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The Mahindra XUV 500 starts at INR 11.58 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 15.51 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
