Alfa Romeo is one of the most revered brands in the history of cars and Formula 1 in part. Alfa Romeo is currently under Fiat Chrysler and we assume Alfa Romeo could be plotting their return to Formula 1 if we go by the words of FIAT Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne.
Alfa Romeo Formula 1 return on cards?
“Alfa Romeo are capable of making their own chassis, just as they are capable of making engines,” he told Italy’s Gazzetta Dello Sport newspaper in an interview, without specifying a timeframe. This is the second instance of the president of Ferrari to mention about Alfa Romeo and Formula 1 in the same sentence. Earlier while talking to reporters at Ferrari’s Maranello factory in December, Marchionne raised the possibility of return after a three-decade absence in the elite motorsport.
“For Alfa Romeo to emphasize themselves as a sporting brand they can and should consider the possibility of returning to race in Formula One. How? Probably in collaboration with Ferrari,” he added.Asked by the Gazzetta whether there was any chance of Alfa competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race, Marchionne replied: “I would much rather put them in Formula One.

Alfa Romeo has been very significant in the sport of Formula 1. Enzo Ferrari, the owner of Ferrari was managing Alfa Romeo teams before setting up his own team. The first two Formula1 championships in 1950 and 1951 were won by Italian Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina and Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio in Alfa Romeo cars. In 1952, the company stopped racing in Formula1 since the Italian government did not fund the expensive car required in order to beat the growing might of Ferrari. Alfa returned to the sport solely as an engine supplier from 1961-1979.
From 1979 Belgian GP, Alfa Romeo started racing as a factory team for a brief period of 7 years until 1985. Following a brief period of being an engine supplier for small teams, Alfa completely dissociated itself from the sport in 1988 till this date.
