Volkswagensaid 3877 Vento cars with 1.5-litre diesel engine and manual gearbox have shown inconsistent Carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions sometimes exceeding the threshold limits during the Conformity of Production (COP) tests done by ARAI and thus were called back for voluntary checks.

The company is temporarily stopped the sales of the manual gearbox version of the Volkswagen Ventowith 1.5-litre diesel engine with immediate effect until the problem has been rectified. Volkswagen India has specifically stated that this problem is only related to CO emissions of the manual gearbox version of Vento with 1.5-litre diesel engine and is not in any way related to the NOx emissions scandal that has rocked the Volkswagen group.

The statement further reads, ” Volkswagen India is analysing the issue and will propose technical measures to ARAI to solve this inconsistency at the earliest. Once approved and confirmed by the competent authorities, Volkswagen India will implement the measures and resume the production and sales of the relevant vehicle. The same technical measures will also be implemented in the impacted vehicles that are already with customers.”

The company has not yet solved the issue and there is no clarity as to when the recall will begin. All other diesel models and variants of Volkswagen India, including Vento 1.5TDI with Automatic Transmission (DSG) and all diesel Polocars, conform to the norms and will be on sale.

The Volkswagen group has been engulfed in the emissions scandalwhere their cars were fitted with a software that bluffed on the emissions test in ideal conditions and emitted almost 40 times the NOx in countries like the USA where the emission norms are stringent. Almost 11 million vehicles were affected and the company is yet to give a solution for the 600,000 vehicles affected in the USA.
