Audi shocked fellow car makers by sticking with an all electric sports car, the e-Tron while rivals like BMW and Mercedes have planned hybrids. Now, Audi is all set to produce the e-Tron in 2011. The radical Audi e-Tron features an electric motor powered by water cooled lithium ion batteries. The electric motors sit in the hubs and provide 313 hp. Now, while the power isn’t too impressive by super car standards, the torque most certainly is. The electric motor churns out a continental snapping turning force of close to 3300 ft-lb, or 4.47 kN/m, split 70 percent to the rear, 30 percent to the front.

Characteristic of the electric motor, all this torque is produced right from idle. Nought to hundred will come up in a blinding 4.8 secs with an electronically limited top speed of 124 mph. The 4-in hub electric motors propel the EV for an estimated range of 154 miles. And charging the Audi e-Trons lithium ion batteries will take all 6 hours. With the Audi e-Tron, a statement has been made loud and clear by Audi that all-electric super cars could be a way of life in the future. Now, we need to watch out at how the other big car makers react to Audi’s all electric, super car plans.
