Suzuki has done a Chevrolet Volt by equipping it’s Swift hatchback with an electric motor that will drive it’s wheels. Suzuki unveiled the Swift plug-in hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show in October. Unlike the Volt, which uses the electric motor only to get off the line, the Swift will use the electric motor almost all the time. Now, if you’re wondering why we are saying almost, it is because of the fact that the Swift also has a little gasoline motor under the bonnet. The gasoline motor will recharge the battery on the go or will power the electric motor itself.

So, you wouldn’t ever have to worry about running out of juice on the road. Meanwhile, the batteries can be recharged through your wall socket. Plug and play anyone? By the way, how relevant is all of this to India? Very relevant we’d say considering the fact that Tata Motors is bringing in it’s Indica EV in 2010-11. So, Suzuki will be looking closely at EV developments in India and might just ask it’s Indian partner, Maruti to launch the Swift hybrid to compete with the other Indian EVs. For the time being though, the Suzuki Swift Plug-In Hybrid is a concept car.
