Prior to the launch, the 2016 Ford Endeavour has been spotted in Chennai. This test mule is the top end Titanium variant and has four wheel drive. For the first time, we also see the chrome bar, which runs across the width of the car at the rear, reads Endeavour instead of Everest, as it is known in markets outside India.
The new Endeavour will be launched early next year
Ford India’s flagship was originally launched globally in 2003 and is currently in its third generation. It was launched in India in 2003.
The large SUV is based on the Ford Ranger pick-up truck. It will be powered by two engines. The first will be a 2.2 litre, four cylinder TDCi diesel engine producing 148 bhp and it will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The other engine will be a 3.2 litre, five-cylinder TDCi diesel engine producing 197 bhp. It will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 3.2-litre engine will also get four-wheel drive as an option. The model spied has four-wheel drive. It can seat seven people.
Mr. Nigel Harris, President and Managing Director of Ford India, said, “You’ll start to see the (new) Endeavour before the end of this year, to look at, but in reality, we’ll bring it early next year.” So, we can expect the fourth generation of the Endeavour SUV to launch early next year.
The third generation of the SUV was designed in Australia based on the Kinetic Design. It is being built in Thailand. The SUV was launched as a concept in August 2013 and is sold only int he Asia – Pacific region. Just like the outgoing model, it will be brought to India as CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits from Thailand and will be assembled at the company’s plant in Chennai.
The SUV competes against the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Isuzu MU-7 and the best-selling Toyota Fortuner. Pricing is expected to be similar to the outgoing model which started at INR 22.16 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and went up till INR 25.67 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
