2016 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV Makes Indian Debut At The Auto Expo

Along with new cars like the Ameo, Passat GTE and the Polo GTi, Volkswagen also showcased their new India-bound Tiguan SUV at the Auto Expo.

The Tiguan will launch the premium SUV next year

The second generation of Volkswagen’s compact SUV was launched at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show held in September. It is based on the popular MWB platform which also underpins the Skoda Octavia and the Audi A3. The MWB platform is based on the popular MQB platform. As a result, the SUV weighs 50 kgs less.

The new sharper design gives it a more muscular look than the outgoing model. It also gets one of the best cabins in the segment. The SUV comes fitted with all the latest safety technologies and driver assist systems like surround camera, Front Assist City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.

The engine options include eight different engines with varying power outputs. It gets four petrol and four diesel engines. Power output is between 125 bhp and 250 bhp. The transmission options will be a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Four-wheel drive is available as an option. Fuel efficiency has gone up by 10% – 24% depending on the engine. The specs for the Indian market have not been announced yet.

The Volkswagen Tiguan rivals the Honda CR-V and the Skoda Yeti. The German company will locally produce the vehicle to help keep costs in check. The premium SUV will go on sale next year.
