Maruti’s M800 replacement to be unveiled at Auto Expo

The Tata Nano stole the legendary Maruti 800’s thunder by becoming the least priced car in the world earlier this year.

The Tata Nano stole the legendary Maruti 800’s thunder by becoming the least priced car in the world earlier this year. Now, Maruti is all set to fight back with an indegenously designed concept that will replace the M800 at the same price point. This announcement was made to the Economic times by Maruti MD Shinzo Nakanishi. Although the Maruti Alto was designed to be the 800s sucessor, the 800 soldiered on gamely and sold like hotcakes even after the Altos introduction.

The legendary Maruti 800, will finally be phased out in 2010 due to stricter emission norms. This is after a continuous production run for 25 long and eventful years, from way back in 1984. Incidentally, Maruti has sold no less than 2.5 million units of the iconic Maruti 800, the car that put India on wheels. The model which will be unveiled as a concept could hit the production floor of people are eager to receive it. Essentially, Maruti is looking at judging the public reaction before plunging in for the kill. Meanwhile, the WagonR and the Versa’s replacement also is expected to be unveiled at the Auto Expo. Also, all Maruti models including the Alto will be equipped with the KB series engines in 2010 when the Bharat Stage 4 emission norms come into place.
