Tesla Model 3 bookings open in India

Tesla Motors sprung a surprise when they opened Tesla Model 3 bookings in India.

Tesla Model 3 bookings go past the 100,000 mark in under 24 hours

Tesla Motorsuntil now had focussed on the developed countries for sale as the cars require Tesla’s supercharging network to refill the batteries. America has the most charging stations and it was least expected to start selling in India so soon. This is a pleasant surprise to all Indians wanting to get their hands on Tesla cars.

Before the Tesla conference where the car was presented, Elon Musk sent out a tweet saying that several more countries are being added to the list where Tesla Model 3can be pre-ordered.

Tesla Model 3  online bookings would commence in countries such as India, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore and Ireland in addition to the ones already existing on the list.

Model 3 would start retailing at $35,000 in the USA which is about INR 23 lakh but with imports it is hard to say what would be its exact price in India.

The first customers to get Model 3 keys would have to wait another 18 months as the production needs to be ramped up at the Tesla’s upcoming Giga factory in Nevada. According to reports, Tesla has already received 115,000 bookings for the Model 3 across the globe.

Tesla has confirmed that the entry-level variant of the Model 3 is capable of doing 0-60 mph (96 kmph) in under 6 seconds and go about 350 km on a single charge. It will also receive the much appreciated Auto Pilot feature seen on the Model Sand Model X. Model 3 can fit 5 adult passengers comfortably and will have the best safety features.

The worrisome part about the Tesla launch in India is the lack of infrastructure as India does not have a single charging station. Although the company has said it will double the number of stations to more than 7000 by the time Model 3 deliveries begin, it would be a question as to how many of those find space in India.

The reservations are to be done on the Tesla motors website.
