Volkswagen India announced its participation in the upcoming ‘Make in India Week’ in Mumbai at the MMRDA Grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex from 13th to 18th February 2016. Volkswagen India will showcase its brand new car, the Ameo, and its highly successful export product, the Vento in a left-hand drive configuration, at the exhibition.
Volkswagen India has been among the top exporter of cars from India to markets like Mexico and Brazil. The company has set up a plant in Chakan near Pune with an initial investment of approximately €795 million (Rs. 6100 crore). The company has also worked heavily on localising the components and also assemble engines like the 1.5-litre diesel in India. At the ‘Make in India Week’ Volkswagen India will showcase its efforts undertaken through the Volkswagen Academy at the Pune Plant towards skill development. With the Dual Mechatronics Apprenticeship Programme, Volkswagen is graduating young and talented workforce to train and make them ready for modern manufacturing processes.
Dr. Andreas Lauermann, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited, commented, “Volkswagen has a long term commitment towards India. We have established ourselves in the country with a full-fledged state of the art manufacturing facility and are catering to domestic as well as export markets from here. India offers a great potential in terms of manufacturing capabilities and this is why we support ‘Make in India’. This initiative will help in making India one of the largest automotive markets in the world.”
Volkswagen India revealed the Ameo subcompact sedan this month just before the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The car will compete with the likes of the Maruti DZire, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest. There will be two engines on offer – a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine. For the first time in this segment, the Volkswagen Ameo will bring a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox mated to a diesel engine. The Volkswagen Ameo will be also exported from India to relevant markets.
