Mercedes Benz seems to have lost it in the styling front.

Mercedes Benz seems to have lost it in the styling front. We were flabbergasted, to put it mildly when we saw the new E class in Pune. The car just doesn’t look like a Merc, both from the front and the rear. Yes, it is big we know. But, whatever happened to Merc’s exuding an aura of solidity and indestructibility. All this seems absent in the new E class which looks more like a Honda Accord from behind and this stunned us.  Ok, the only saving grace in the show department is the arrow like crouched stance that the E class exhibits when viewed sideways.

Now, coming to the go department, the Mercedes E Class has plenty of pizzaz to keep you very engaged. You have the option of a gasoline or an oil burner, both V6s. The 3.5 liter petrol engine is more powerful than the 3 liter diesel while the diesel dethrones the petrol in the torque stakes. Apart from the motors, your daily drive will be more fun with plenty of gadgetry to assist you on the dynamics as well as the car-tainment front. The cavernous interiors like always are extremely well appointed which will cocoon you in ultimate comfort. You can buy the Mercedes Benz E Classfor about 45-50 lakh rupees depending on the engine options and trim levels. All said and done, in our opinion, the Mercedes E Class just doesn’t look like a Merc when seen in the flesh. And we just don’t like it for this.

Hydrogen Fuel cell powered Suzuki SX4 unveiled at tokyo

Hydrogen Fuel cell powered Suzuki SX4 unveiled at tokyo

October’s Tokyo Motor Show saw another brilliant concept from Suzuki that could hit the road very shortly.

Suzuki-SX4-Hydrogen-Fuel-Cell-Car-Tokyo

Suzuki-SX4-Hydrogen-Fuel-Cell-Car-Tokyo

We’re talking about the hydrogen fuel cell powered Suzuki SX4 . The Fuel Cell borrowed from GM will use hydrogen compressed at 10,000 Psi to generate electricity. Now, this is certainly a car to watch out for because it truly represents affordable hydrogen fuel cell powered cars that can be bought by the masses. Test cars are already doing the rounds in Japan and will soon hit showroom floors.

Will the SX4 come to India?

That isn’t too probable in the near future considering the virtual absence of hydrogen fuel dispensing infrastructure in India as of now. However, all this could change a few years from now when Indian manufacturers too, join the FCV bandwagon.

The Maruti A-Star isn’t exactly flying out of Maruti Showrooms.

The Maruti A-Star isn’t exactly flying out of Maruti Showrooms. A big reason for this is the little boot that the A-Star comes with. Hence, Indian families haven’t really warmed up to the A-Star although the Indian youth have been impressed with the A-Star’s nimble dynamics. Now, Suzuki has previewed the redesigned 2010 Alto at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show even as the older Alto is completing it’s first anniversary.

2010-suzuki-alto-a-star-dashboard-new

2010-suzuki-alto-a-star-dashboard-new

The redesign primarily hinges on endowing the Alto with a bigger boot. This in turn makes the Alto look a little boxy when viewed from behind. Indians will find the A-Star’s rear looking like the Estilo’s if Maruti decides to bring in the 2010 Alto/A-Star to India. The family men will love this redesign while the youth will cringe at it. We hope that this change hasn’t robbed the Alto/A-Star of any of it’s nimble handling prowess. We have a strong feeling that the 2010 A-Star could be featured at the upcoming Auto Expo since Maruti manufactures all the Alto(A-Star’s) for Suzuki. Watch out for this one.

Suzuki has done a Chevrolet Volt by equipping it’s Swift hatchback with an electric motor that will drive it’s wheels. Suzuki unveiled the Swift plug-in hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show in October. Unlike the Volt, which uses the electric motor only to get off the line, the Swift will use the electric motor almost all the time. Now, if you’re wondering why we are saying almost, it is because of the fact that the Swift also has a little gasoline motor under the bonnet. The gasoline motor will recharge the battery on the go or will power the electric motor itself.

So, you wouldn’t ever have to worry about running out of juice on the road. Meanwhile, the batteries can be recharged through your wall socket. Plug and play anyone? By the way, how relevant is all of this to India? Very relevant we’d say considering the fact that Tata Motors is bringing in it’s Indica EV in 2010-11. So, Suzuki will be looking closely at EV developments in India and might just ask it’s Indian partner, Maruti to launch the Swift hybrid to compete with the other Indian EVs. For the time being though, the Suzuki Swift Plug-In Hybrid is a concept car.

Tesla Model 3 unveiled

Tesla Model 3 unveiled

The much awaited Tesla Model 3 has been finally revealed amongst crazy excitement from the fans of Elon Musk and Tesla Motors across the globe.

Tesla Model 3

Model 3 is a $35,000 car capable of going almost 350 km (215 miles) on a single charge and will be doing 0-100 kmph in under 6 seconds according to the revered boss, Elon Musk. There will be other variants of the car that will go much faster at a higher price point. The only problem is you will have to wait until late 2017 to get one in your hands if you go book it right now!! Yes, Tesla has started accepting reservation for a Model 3 at $1000 in the USA and few variations in booking amount across the world.

Reports coming in from across the world show hundreds of people queuing outside the Tesla stores even before the stores open. The bookings can be done through Tesla store or online, however, the prior might give them a better position in the queue. Also, owing a previous Tesla benefits since those will be given precedence over others as a small ‘Thank you’ gesture probably!!

All Model 3 will be compatible with the supercharging stations. There will be more than 7000 of them by the end of next year across the USA. Model 3 will come with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, ”seating 5 adults comfortably” according to Elon Musk. The interior will have a 15-inch landscape styled touch screen instead of the 17-inch portrait styled control system seen on the Model S and Model X.

Autopilot will be a standard feature as will be the safety features seen on the elder siblings. The car will have a front and rear cargo space which is “more cargo capacity than any gasoline car of the same external dimensions,” said Musk.

Tesla Model 3 could be the revolution that was needed to make a change to the automotive world and it surely didn’t disappoint.

Tesla Model 3 bookings open in India

Tesla Model 3 bookings open in India

Tesla Motors sprung a surprise when they opened Tesla Model 3 bookings in India.

Tesla Model 3 bookings go past the 100,000 mark in under 24 hours

Tesla Motorsuntil now had focussed on the developed countries for sale as the cars require Tesla’s supercharging network to refill the batteries. America has the most charging stations and it was least expected to start selling in India so soon. This is a pleasant surprise to all Indians wanting to get their hands on Tesla cars.

Before the Tesla conference where the car was presented, Elon Musk sent out a tweet saying that several more countries are being added to the list where Tesla Model 3can be pre-ordered.

Tesla Model 3  online bookings would commence in countries such as India, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore and Ireland in addition to the ones already existing on the list.

Model 3 would start retailing at $35,000 in the USA which is about INR 23 lakh but with imports it is hard to say what would be its exact price in India.

The first customers to get Model 3 keys would have to wait another 18 months as the production needs to be ramped up at the Tesla’s upcoming Giga factory in Nevada. According to reports, Tesla has already received 115,000 bookings for the Model 3 across the globe.

Tesla has confirmed that the entry-level variant of the Model 3 is capable of doing 0-60 mph (96 kmph) in under 6 seconds and go about 350 km on a single charge. It will also receive the much appreciated Auto Pilot feature seen on the Model Sand Model X. Model 3 can fit 5 adult passengers comfortably and will have the best safety features.

The worrisome part about the Tesla launch in India is the lack of infrastructure as India does not have a single charging station. Although the company has said it will double the number of stations to more than 7000 by the time Model 3 deliveries begin, it would be a question as to how many of those find space in India.

The reservations are to be done on the Tesla motors website.

The Geneva Motor Show begins in 10 days time and all major manufacturers across the globe are bringing their hatchback’s, sedan’s, SUV’s and supercars to the motoring mela in one of the most famous cities of Switzerland. We compile a list of 20 production version cars which will make their global debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Alpina BMW B7: Alpina for over 50 years has been a small manufacturer from Germany who tuned BMW cars making them faster and luxurious than standard BMW models. This time, the folks lay hands on a 7-series sedan to reach speeds of 310kmph on German Autobahn while a 0-100 kmph time of just 3.6 seconds. Not to forget is the fact that it is more luxurious than the ultra-luxurious 2016 BMW 7-series. It is expected to cost $1,30,000.
Aston Martin DB11: The replacement to Aston Martin DB9 will see a Geneva launch. It is expected to carry a 5.2-litre V12 making about 600 bhp. The new car is also expected to come with a 4-litre turbocharged V8 unit from AMG. The Aston Martin DB 11 looks distinctly different than any other Aston and will reach showrooms by the end of the year as a 2017 model.
Audi Q2: It will be the smallest SUV from Audi sitting even below the Q3. It has been teased with teaser images and video already but nobody is really sure if it will be named Q1 or Q3. The Audi Q2 will be based on Volkswagens MQB platform, employing a 3 or 4- cylinder options and standard 6-speed transmission. There is high possibility of Audi bringing in this model to India as early as possible as it continues to battle Mercedes Benz for the Number 1 spot in the Indian luxury car market.

Will it be Audi Q2 or Q1 ?

Audi RS Q3 Performance: The compact crossover segment demands more power and that’s what you get!! An inline 5 turbocharged unit that churns out 367 bhp and 465 Nm of torque. As a result, 100 kmph comes up in just 4.4 seconds from standstill. For comparison, Audi R8 V8 coupe goes zero-to-100 in 4.4 seconds!!! Isn’t that bonkers? The engine is mated to a seven-speed S-Tronic transmission that “has been rigorously tuned for sportiness” and adds the Quattro all-wheel drive system. Realistically, this one has only one competitor, Mercedes Benz GLA45 AMG.
Bentley Flying Spur V8S: The ‘S’ has finally arrived with a twin turbocharged V8 generating 521 horses and a mental 680 Nm of torque. The all wheel drive system pushes this beast beyond 100 kmph in just 4.6 seconds. The ‘S’ has slightly stiffer suspension, rear diffuser and grille are painted black, interiors have a touchscreen remote, and an available Wi-Fi hotspot amongst the largesse of the British carmaker. Customers can as usual, can go bonkers with the choices and options to personalize their cars as per their taste at additional cost.
Bugatti Chiron: The successor to the Veyron will break cover at the Geneva Motor Show, hopefully expecting to become the fastest production car in the world beating the Hennessy Venom GT. Chiron will be powered by an 8.0-litre W16 engine with four turbochargers and a massive 15 radiators to cool down the heat generated by 1500 horses. Chiron would accelerate from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 2.2 seconds will have to have a top speed of 467 kmph according to some reports. The Chiron will cost more than $2.5 million and only 500 examples will be built to maintain that exclusivity.
BMW 740e PHEV: BMW iPerformance brand will be launched at the Motor Show and the first model to wear that badge will be BMW 740e iPerformance. The  7 Series plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) are available in three variants, the standard 740e, long wheelbase 740Le, and the all-wheel drive LWB 740Le xDrive.  The BMW 740e iPerformance models get a 2.0 litre BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine which produces 258 hp and 400 Nm of torque with an electric motor capable of generating an additional 113 hp/250 Nm.
BMW M760Li xDrive : The 2017 BMW M760Li is powered by a humongous 6.6-liter V12 engine with mind blowing figures of  600 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. it reaches speeds of 100 in just 3.9 seconds and sadly, has an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph.  It gets an all-wheel drive system by default, transmitting the enormous power with help of an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission system. It will come with various driving modes to best suit you driving mood and capabilities. It is also equipped with BMW ConnectDrive infotainment system.
Brabus Mercedes G500: G-wagons are a beast in layman’s terms. But a Brabus-tuned G-Wagon is something you would always love. So here is the Brabus G500 which holds the now familiar 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 producing about 493bhp which is almost 70 more than the standard one.Additionally, you get a custom front bumper and grille, vented hood, flared wheel arches, new steel side pipes, rear bumper with a diffuser and massive monoblock wheels. On the interior, black and red leather and Alcantara, contrast stitching, illuminated door sills, blue ambient lighting system, wooden trims make you feel special!
Ferrari GTC4Lusso: Ferrari GTC4 Lusso will be a replacement to the Ferrari FF. Powering the beast will be a 6.3 litre 65-degree V12 engine producing 680 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 697 Nm of torque at 5,750 rpm. The 4.9-metre long car weighs 1,790 kgs and it accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 3.4 seconds and it goes on to a top speed of 335 kmph.

2012 Vespa LX125

Once upon a time, Italian scooter maker Piaggio tied up with Bajaj or rather licensed Bajaj to sell it’s scooters in India. A decade passed and Piaggio entered India with LML and produced some wonderful scooters under the LML Vespa brand. LML went defunct in the Indian market and now concentrates on exports and some limited domestic 4 stroke production production for the scooter crazy Delhi belt. Meanwhile, Piaggio stayed on manufacturing uninspiring three wheelers under the Ape brand.

Piaggio, now in it’s third innings in India as a scooter maker of repute finally is setting up a greenfield facility in Baramati that will produce the Vespa LX125 for the Indian market. Finally, folks who’d love to own a scooter but cannot stand vanilla machines like the Honda Activa and Suzuki Access 125 might find the Italian bred Vespa LX125’s retro lines very interesting.

Add the 125cc four stroke CVT engine that produces a rorty 10.7 Bhp of power allied to 9.6 Nm of torque and there, you have a very chic looking retro Vespa both you and your dad would love to be seen on. 2012 is when the first of the Vespa LX125s would hit Indian streets as per the official press conference Piaggio held in Mumbai today announcing the re-entry of the iconic Vespa brand into India, which along with Aprilia would be Piaggio’s new beginning in the Indian market.

Harley Davidson Fat boy Special Edition in Indian Tricolours

. Yes, we mean the Indian Tricolor . Harley Davidson’s marketing muscle knows that and went into overdrive just before the 2010 Indian Auto Expo. The result was anything but spectacular. To touch that emotional vein that Indians are known to possess, and also as a mark of respect for India, Harley Davidson unveiled a Tricoloured Fat Boy at the Auto Expo.

While we really don’t know the implications of the tricolor being used on motorcycles, we simply loved the magical paint job that the Tricolored Fat Boy sported. Harley Davidson fames itself on offering motorcycle enthusiasts an almost unlimited range of customizations.

So the tricolor paint job too will be standard Harley custom fare if you have the 18+ Lakh INR to ride home on one of the Harley Davidson Fat Boys. We can’t stop talking about how gorgeous the Harley Davidson looks in the Indian Tricolor on it.

Still don’t believe us? Take a look for yourself.

World NCAP Pledges To Eradicate Zero-Star Safety Rating By 2020

World NCAP Pledges To Eradicate Zero-Star Safety Rating By 2020

World NCAP has pledged to eradicate cars that fail crash tests by 2020.

Speaking to Autocar, World NCAP secretary general David Ward has said that the current reasons given by the manufacturers are ridiculous and the consumers won’t back them for much longer.

Most of the budget hatchbacks sold in the Indian market do not meet the safety regulations.

Regulations state that the minimum acceptable speed for testing a car is 35 mph. But even at this speed, many of today’s cars fail to pass the test. Manufacturers claim that they are trying to build very cheap cars to attract motorcycle customers. But Ward claims that there is no evidence to prove this. Increasing the safety of the car would not actually increase the price. An airbag would cost just $50 (INR 3,300). Manufacturers claim that adding additional safety equipment to cars increases its price.

Budget cars from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Datsun and Ford are the main cars that have been failing these tests. The main countries these cars are from are developing countries like Brazil and India. Ward feels that tightening the regulations in these countries should help in eradicating zero-star rated by 2020. He also warned that consumers are slowly increasing pressure on the manufacturers in increasing the safety of their products.

The Volvo XC90 is one of the safest vehicles on sale today

We have seen this trend in India ever since some of the cheap budget cars in India failed their safety test. Consumers have been demanding for an increase in safety since then and manufacturers have been forced to oblige. In the end, it is the manufacturers duty to ensure the safety of the consumers. We support all the initiatives which look to improve the safety of cars on Indian roads.

Hyundai Creta monthly production to hit 9000 units

Hyundai Creta monthly production to hit 9000 units

Hyundai Creta is creating problems for Hyundai, but happily this problem is about the huge demand and the need to plug the demand-supply gap that has been excessive since day one.

Hyundai Creta monthly production to hit 9000 units

The company has planned to increase the production of Creta to 9,000-10,000 units to reduce the waiting periods. The manufacturing plants in Chennai will start producing the additional units December onwards. In an interview with The Hindu Businessline, Bo Shin Seo, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., revealed that the company will be increasing the monthly production volume of the Hyundai Creta and Elite i20 from the current 7,000 units each to 9,000 – 10,000 units each from December. He also said that the production will see increments of around 2,000 units every month from then on.

Hyundai had initially planned to produce 5,000 units of the model monthly, but thanks to the strong demand increased the production to 7500 units and defer the export plans to satiate the local demand. However, a fifty percent increase in production has not solved the matter as the company is selling more than 7,000 units monthly. The waiting period has risen anywhere between 3 and 6 months depending on the variants you choose.

Hyundai has had a spectacular run with the Creta as it has managed to sell more than 7000 units for the last couple of months and the bookings have crossed the 55,000 mark in just about 75 days, making it by far the largest selling SUV in India. Creta prices were just a notch above the Suzuki S-Cross and yet annihilated the competition.

The Hyundai Creta is will be available in three engine options – a 1.6-litre gamma dual VTVT petrol, a 1.4-litre U2 CRDi diesel and 1.6-litre CRDi diesel. The 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder Gamma Dual VTVT petrol engine will give a total power output of 123bhp and 154Nm of maximum torque. The 1.4litre U2 CRDi diesel engine gives a total power output of 90bhp and maximum torque of 224Nm while the 1.6litre U2 CRDi diesel engine gives a maximum power output of 128bhp and a total torque of 265Nm. Hyundai is offering two transmissions: six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. The 1.6-litre dual VTVT petrol has a fuel efficiency of 15.29kmpl, 1.4-litre U2 CRDi diesel has a fuel economy of 19.67kmpl while the 1.6-litre CRDi diesel has a fuel economy of 21.38kmpl and has a fuel tank of 55-litre.

Toyota to challenge small car segment with Daihatsu

Toyota to challenge small car segment with Daihatsu

Toyota has had to rethink its strategy in the wake of Delhi Diesel Ban as cars powered by over 2000cc diesel engines were banned for three months in Delhi and National Capital Region.

Toyota has had to rethink its strategy in the wake of Delhi Diesel Ban as cars powered by over 2000cc diesel engines were banned for three months in Delhi and National Capital Region. Toyota now intends to be the real volume player competing against the likes of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai with the Daihatsu brand which recently became its fully owned subsidiary.

The Japanese company was forced to cease operations of its plants near Bangalore

“There are so many customers of competitors who want to buy a Toyota but we lack a product line and they end up buying other brands. We have a responsibility to offer more choice. We see some possibility in the small car segment from that point. We are working very hard to streamline the priorities,” Naomi Ishii, managing director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, told Business Standard.

“If Daihatsu can be utilised to meet the demand, we should do it. Compared to Toyota, Daihatsu is very good at designing the small car and manufacturing a cost-competitive vehicle. We have to study this area carefully before coming up with a conclusion. Some decision should be taken,” Ishii said.

Toyota has not seen the kind of success it would have wanted with the Etios and Liva which were its low-cost offerings in the Indian market. Daihatsu is seen as a kind of specialist in the small segment with cars placed and priced lower than Toyota. Toyota saw sales dip by as much as 33 percent in January 2016 and would like to arrest the slide by making its presence felt in the volume segment. Daihatsu, a fully owned subsidiary of Toyota is conducting a feasibility study with suppliers, trying to understand the cost structure of Indian market. The company wants to be in the volume segment and is currently developing a small car for the Indonesian market which could find its way into India soon.

Koenigsegg Agera RS Sold Out

Koenigsegg Agera RS Sold Out

The Koenigsegg Agera RS has been sold out, making it the fastest selling supercar in the Swedish company’s history.

The Agera RS made its debut at last year’s Geneva Motor Show in March. The very first customer car was also delivered at that time. Since then, in just 10 months, they have managed to sell all the 25 models of the car. Orders have been made and deposits paid for.

The cars have been sold in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE. Many more markets were left without any allocations as the demand for the hypercar was greater than the supply. Production of the cars are scheduled to begin this year and the last cars will be delivered in 2017.

The company’s founder, Christian von Koenigsegg said, “I am extremely proud of the Agera RS program. The RS is a classic Koenigsegg, with all the core values and features that the Koenigsegg brand stands for. The performance, road feel and responsiveness are truly amazing and the level of technical sophistication is second to none. It is a true ‘pinnacle’ project that has been wholly embraced by our customers and friends.”

The hypercar is based on the Agera and it even comes with a removable roof that can be stored under the front hood of the car. It is powered by a twin turbo 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 1160 bhp at 7,800 rpm and 1280 Nm of torque at 4,100 rpm. It is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifts and power is sent to the rear wheels. The car weighs just 1.4 tons. The performance figures will be similar to the other Ageras. The 0-100 kmph acceleration time is less than 2.5 seconds while 200 kmph is dealt in less than 8 seconds and 300 kmph in around 12 seconds. Top speed will be around 440 kmph mark.

Nissan 370Z

We’ve got Porsches, Ferraris and even Lamborghinis in India, but none of them are affordable, well relatively speaking of course. Now we have Nissan upping the ante and gunning straight for Porsche’s Cayman S. Nothing has changed except the fact that the turf now has moved from the Autobahns of Germany, from the Freeways of the United States to the National Highways of India. Yes the Nissan 370Z will storm into India sooner than you think, in January 2010 that is. Nissan will unveil the 370Z at the upcoming 2010 Indian Auto Expo.

Nissan 370Z Nissan 370Z

Nissan 370Z

What does the Nissan 370Z have that makes enthusiasts wait with bated breath for it? How about 332 thoroughbred horses screaming their lungs out at a hair raising 7000rpm. To help the galloping horses, 270 pound feet of torque will chip in and do their bit at 5200 rpm. All this will result in a neck sapping acceleration taking you to 100 Ks in less than 5 seconds with top speed to match. Nissan has always been the poor man’s Porsche and here is why. The Nissan 350Z will sell for under 50 lakh rupees in India and at that price, the price to performance is ratio is simply unmatchable. Even by Porsche for that matter. And we can picture a certain super car called the Porsche Cayman already sweating profusely.
