Suzuki Gixxer SF First Ride Review

, the fully faired derivative of the company’s top selling 150 cc motorcycle, has been launched to have a go at the Yamaha Fazer FI V2.0 which has been running without any direct challengers so far. Based on the highly potent Gixxer naked bike, the SF promises to up the style quotient while retaining all the positive traits of its sibling. We managed a short spin astride the new motorcycle to bring you a quick first ride impression.

The Suzuki Gixxer SF manages to garner eyeballs, especially in its MotoGP livery.

Design

The full fairing has certainly enhanced the Gixxer’s road presence. With an apparent design inspiration from the mighty Hayabusa, the SF manages to garner attention effortlessly, especially in the special edition MotoGP blue livery. The shield shaped headlamp is flanked by stylish air vents. The fairing has smooth and curvy surface upfront and extends into sporty cowls which conceal the cylinder head. The fairing mounted mirrors are stylish as well functional.

The diecast aluminium muffler cover is exclusive to the fully faired variant.

The rest of the design comes from the naked Gixxer which itself is a handsome machine to boot with. The sculpted fuel tank, a comfortable single piece saddle, an LED taillight, a meaty silencer end canister with vertically arranged twin exhaust tips (muffler cover design is exclusive to the SF) are the noteworthy design elements.

The plastic quality on the fairing is poor and the fairing panels are flimsy.

While the net result is aesthetically pleasing, it has to be mentioned that the side panels of the fairing feel fragile and the plastic quality is low.

Engine and Gearbox

The 155 cc engine has a linear performance and the refinement is impressive.

The 155 cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine continues to push out 14.8 PS at 8,000 rpm and 14 Nm at 6,00o rpm. Mated to a 5-speed gearbox, performance can be termed as sprightly. The carbureted engine stays refined for most part but the gear shift quality in our test bike was not as good as expected however, going by the good experience we had with the naked Gixxer, we think it is a one-off issue. The power and torque delivery is fairly linear and the Gixxer SF can cruise comfortably at decent speeds.

Ride, Handling and Braking

The riding posture is not very different from that of the naked Gixxer and hence SF feels and behaves the same.

Suzuki has employed a new bride-type handlebar mount in the SF. However, you would be disappointed if you get astride the Gixxer SF with an expectation of a more aggressive riding position, for there is no difference in the overall feel whatsoever, when compared to the street fighter variant.

For more details, read our comprehensive review of the Gixxer.

Suzuki Gixxer SF – Walkaround Video

That said, the regular Gixxer itself had a sporty riding stance for a naked bike. The fairing feels compact from the rider’s point of view and the steering is light, making for easy maneuverability in city traffic. At this point, we would like to reiterate that the SF feels and behaves very much like its donor model. You get a sorted suspension (front telescopic fork and rear monoshock), delightful handling characteristics, grippy tyres (100/80-17 front, 140/60R-17 rear) and novice-friendly progressive brakes (front disc and rear drum).

Brige type handlebar mount is claimed to have improved maneuverability.

The overall dynamics of the Suzuki Gixxer SF is nothing to find fault with but we would have loved a more aggressive, forward-biased riding stance to go with the full fairing.

Features

Apart from the stylish full fairing, the motorcycle receives special edition blue MotoGP livery with florescent green decals and rim tapes, a fully digital instrument console and an aluminium die cast exhaust muffler cover. The single piece seats get red contrast stitching. The vehicle tips the scales at 139 kg which is light for a fully faired motorcycle. Fuel tank has a capacity of 12 litres.

Verdict

If you don’t mind paying extra only for the full faring, you wouldn’t go wrong with the Gixxer SF.

At an asking price of INR 83,439 (ex-showroom Delhi), the Suzuki Gixxer SF undercuts its rival, the Yamaha Fazer FI V2.0. It has a sporty appeal but the quality of the fairing could have been better. Dynamically, the fully faired 150 cc motorcycle is as good as its street fighter model if not better. So, if you like the Gixxer SF’s looks and don’t mind paying a little extra only for the additional body panels, you wouldn’t go wrong with it since it is a mere extension of what was already a potent and attractive package.

Pros Sporty looks Easy to maneuver
Cons Poor plastic quality Not any different from its naked sibling in terms of feel and behavior

Rod Fountain explores the edges of the open-top Ford GTX1's envelope
Lust at first sight, love at first drive.

Ford GTX1
Ford GTX1

Lust at first sight, love at first drive. That’s the only way that I can describe my experience with the new Ford GT. Last year I drove a thousand miles through France in this breathtaking supercar, and if I had died at the end of the journey, I would have died a happy man, sporting a stupid grin. The Ford development team might as well have packed and gone home, perfection had been achieved.

The Ford development team did pack up, they didn’t go home, but instead turned their attention to the Shelby GT500, a high performance Mustang. Fortunately for us, one engineer and designer from Ford SVT (Special Vehicle Team), Kip Ewing, had a vision of creating an open-top version of the GT and after getting approval from the SVT director, Hau Thai Tang, the Ford GTX1 was born.

Hacksaw job

Mark Gerisch, of the Genaddi Design Group, was approached to carry out the work involved in taking the hacksaw to this iconic car's roof line. To top it off they also developed a few aftermarket modifications to complete the drop-top look. All together they offer an amazing $140,000’s worth of modifications. The most notable include the roof conversion, lowered suspension, and a power upgrade, but more on that later.

Most post-production roof cutting exercises end up in, at best, a hopeless array of panels lying in the garage at home and require all the mental dexterity of a chess genius to fit them. Not to mention the scuttle shake that results from the lack of torsional rigidity from removing the roof. No so here.

A simple three-panel system with rear catches offers either the T-Bar, twin side pop up panel and, for full posing prowess, the full convertible look. All are interchangeable in seconds and the panels store away conveniently behind the front seats in their own padded bags. Look over your shoulder and you can now see two plexi-glass panels on top of the engine cover which afford a satisfying view of the supercharger. And, thanks to some clever chassis work and the car's inherent strength, there’s absolutely no shake rattle 'n' roll. All up this will set you back a mortgage-extending $38,000.

Seven hundred brake horsepower

Now here’s the juicy bit. This version of the GTX1 was running a whopping 700bhp. That’s in a road-going, mid-engine, rear wheel drive, GT car with absolutely no electronic trickery to keep you from joining the (very fast approaching) scenery, backwards. That’s 40 HP more than a Ferrari Enzo. Lowered, front and rear by 32mm and 25mm, sitting on 19- and 20-inch custom rims, sporting a free-flow, cat back Borla exhaust and a short throw shifter, the GTX1 is surely the new must have LA Boulevard cruiser.

The power increase is achieved using a smaller charger pulley, re-mapped ECU taking into account the increased air intake, fuel flow and modified timings. A modified air corrector and electronic diffuser ensure that the otherwise standard 5.4-litre, aluminium block gets sufficient air and fuel into all 8 cylinders. Engineers estimate that this standard block could potentially run 800bhp but, for reliability and longevity, a 125HP upgrade pack is offered to customers -- it's a snip at $8,500. You’ll also be glad to know that none of this work would, theoretically, invalidate any Ford warranty. Phew, you can relax!

Adrenalin-inducing

On the track the moment you push the start button a surge of adrenalin accompanies the orchestral roar from the pipes behind and you’re reminded that this is no standard GT. The muted, standard exhaust is now more of a burbling gargle with undertones of thunder. It’s hard to suppress the urge to just nail it and gun towards the horizon into oblivion. And it gets to oblivion rather briskly; 60mph is up in 3.3 seconds, usually in a small cloud of expensive smoke while the driver furiously feathers the throttle in search of traction. Triple figures are up in the sevens, soon 150’s up and the acceleration still feels nothing short of time distorting as the cars want to push on to its 210-plus mph top speed. It’s a total sensory overload; every sense being in a constant state of catch-up.

Turn in and the steering feels sharper than standard, but never twitchy. Exit a corner at speed and you feel buckets-loads of mechanical grip as the Pirelli P-Zero rubber earns its keep. Feed the power in gently the handling feels surprisingly fluid for a relatively heavy GT car. Entering a corner too fast and turning in too late will result in the front end pushing wide, but you can correct easily by easing off the gas or by planting the throttle and applying a lot of opposite lock -- quickly. Overcook it though and you’ll be spinning in a grey haze of tyre smoke, much as the standard GT.

The best trick is that this über-GT is just as easy to drive as the factory GT. A light clutch, power steering and good seat support makes it all about as straightforward to drive as a VW Golf, albeit with very restricted forward vision…and considerably more power.

Outdragging an Enzo

So, the perfect everyday supercar just got better. It can out drag an Enzo in a straight line, and let you pose with the top down while still being a daily driver, and all for around £120,000 all-up.

And that, in supercar terms, is the bargain of the century. Where do I sign?

2016 Triumph Street Twin sports a revised exhaust system that provides better mileage.

Triumph’s latest launch is a stunning mould of old school cafe racer and contemporary urban cruiser. While the body remains decidedly classic, the digital instrument cluster, advanced tech under the seat and dual tone color scheme lend the 2016 Street Twin a modern touch.

The 2016 Triumph Street Twin unveiled at the Auto Expo will serve as an entry level cafe racer and a platform for those interested in the Triumph brand.

RE: Ford Fiesta ST Revo: Driven

RE: Ford Fiesta ST Revo: Driven

Thursday 29th January 2015
Ford Fiesta ST Revo: Driven
Faster, louder and harder than standard, but is it any better?

Certain cars dictate certain driving styles. In a luxurious saloon, your inputs are measured and smooth to maintain the serenity. With a big turbo it's nice to hold a gear and anticipate the boost. And aren't roadsters just for blipped gearchanges and tunnels?

Looks great on coilovers, ride less impressive

In a Revo Fiesta ST, your foot is to the floor. Everywhere. Traffic lights are start lines, roundabouts have clip points and B-roads become stages. That may sound juvenile but I defy anyone to drive this car with any concern for maturity. If the standardis a Scrappy Doo kind of character, this Revo car is Wile E. Coyote; of the same family but meaner, nastier and even keener to, er, scrap.

But Revo's plan for mischief is far more successful than Coyote's, perhaps because it is as simple as his ideas were complex. And that's where the extended analogy ends, honest. Essentially the Revo ST is a faster and more capable version of an already fast and very fun car. And therefore pretty fantastic.

It's an enhancement and not a transformation though. If the regular Fiesta's up-and-at-'em attitude isn't for you then you'll hate the Revo. Indeed, for those used to hot hatches with adaptive dampers and endless configurability (guilty), the ceaseless intensity of the Fiesta can come as something of a shock. The ST is about as old school as contemporary hot hatches are and this car is even more of the same.

Well what's a tuned hot hatch without a big exhaust?

BD14NVE is Revo'scar, to become an even wilder Stage 3 soon. As well as the software upgrades this car had a Scorpion turbo back exhaust, Airtec Stage 2 intercooler, Bilstein B14 coilovers and Team Dynamics wheels. Don't forget about that bizarre overboost too; because it isn't permanent, the Fiesta is sold as 182hp and 177lb ft despite having 200hp and 214lb ft for 15 seconds every time full throttle is deployed. So you're never going to be without 200hp when required.

Regardless, the Revo ST is a damn fast little car. Seriously, how-can-a-Fiesta-be-doing-this sort of fast. Revo states gains of up to 30hp depending on fuel but a far more significant torque gain of between 47 and 79lb ft. So that's up to 293lb ft. Yep. At Bruntingthorpe this Fiesta reached 100 mph from a standstill in 13.7 seconds, with six of those taken to hit 60. For reference Harris timedat 15.4 seconds and the standard car did 17 flat in Autocar's hands. It's hilariously rapid.

Definitely not planning reverse doughnuts

Unfortunately we didn't have opportunity to verify those numbers independently but there is certainly no reason to doubt them. The fundamental characteristics of the standard car have remained, just with a whole heap more muscle. The slight low-rev hesitancy is only more noticeable now because of the torrent that follows soon after. By 2,000rpm or so you're rocking along quite nicely but at 3,500rpm it's absolutely tearing down the road. This car felt keener than the last standard car I drove to chase the 6,800rpm limiter too but that could have been attributable to a few more miles. There are no peaks or troughs in the delivery, simply a sustained lunge of addictive, brilliant boost. It's mega.

The Scorpion exhaust is the perfect accompaniment. Mostly. It burbles with small throttle applications, blares at full attack and can be a touch annoying at a cruise. As with all tuning, it's a case of personal preference. I would keep it, just for those perfect downchange moments with a few pops from behind. It's not for those wishing to make subtle progress mind. But then are those people considering any kind of Fiesta ST?

Fast before, now absurdly rapid

An upgrade that may require further deliberation are the. A lower and stiffer Fiesta ST is fabulous at the right times and fairly frustrating at the wrong ones. It jostles with the road, throwing up imperfections you never knew existed and feeling quite feisty. The damping is fine, it could just do with a fraction more compliance and travel for everyday road use. These units are height adjustable and, given the amount of times this ST scraped its nose, a few more millimetres up would probably help. It would surely be outstanding on a track in this setting but it's a little too harsh for everyday. Revo is working on some adjustable units for the next raft of upgrades which will be interesting to try.

Of course the flipside is superb. So well tied down is the ST on its coilovers with fresh front tyres that traction is fantastic, much better than you may expect given that torque output. The great turn in from the standard car is maintained with the same eagerness to tighten its line and be adjusted on the throttle. But the feeling that sometimes occurs with the standard ST of being right up on its tippy-toes never materialises, the Revo so much more composed in quick direction changes. On the right road I'm not sure much more fun could be had with front-wheel drive.

It's really good out of the car park too

And everything that's so appealing about the standard Fiesta ST remains in the tuned car. The gearbox is slick, the pedals are nicely placed and it looks pretty cool too. The full breakdown of costs is below but this isn't too costly, and parts can be added one by one. With used STsyou could have a car like this complete for comfortably less than £16K. As with all modified cars it's your own risk as the changes from factory standard will invalidate the warranty. It will be worth investigating how an insurance premium would be affected too. For what it's worth the Revo car never felt like anything less than a very fast version of the regular ST, not some sketchy tuner special. The tweaks are hardly drastic after all.

Some conclusions then. The standard Fiesta ST is a great car and the Mountune version even more so. If neither can satisfy your desire for a fast Fiesta though the Revo absolutely will. Anyone who enjoys a raucous hot hatch will totally love it. Personally I'd be inclined to search out a slightly less focused suspension setup but the additional power is addictive once experienced. The 280hp Stage 3 car with a limited-slip diff and bigger brakes should be amazing. I can't wait.

Volkswagen’s new subcompact sedan which was supposed to debut at the 2016 Auto Expo will be called the ‘Ameo’. The company revealed this name in a press release and also teased the car by revealing its taillight. The name is derived from the Latin word ‘Amo’ which means ‘I love’.

Volkswagen has been in the wrong news lately in India as well as globally due to the Dieselgate scandal. But that is not stopping the company from launching new models in India. The company was rumoured for a very long time to be developing a sub 4-metre car and is all set to launch it at the upcoming Auto Expo. But the company has revealed the car’s name in advance and as mentioned above will be called the ‘Ameo’ The car is expected to set high standards of safety, interior quality and build in its segment.

As far as looks are concerned, the car will have a stubby rear end due to length restrictions. The front though is shared with the facelifted Volkswagen Polo with the double barrel headlamps with the smoked out black treatment. The silhouette is expected to be similar to the Polo till the rear doors. On the insides, the car will get an interior similar to the Polo. The multifunction flat bottom steering wheel, the infotainment system and the interior colour theme could be carried over from the hatchback as well. The Volkswagen Ameo will have class leading build quality and a premium appeal for sure.

Engine options are expected to be carried over from the Polo hatchback, which means this car will get a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol that develops 75BHP and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel that develops 89BHP. Both engines will be offered with a slick 5-speed manual gearbox but it is unsure whether Volkswagen will offer the TSI-DSG combo with this car as it will sky-rocket the prices. The Ameo is expected to be priced slightly higher than its competitors like the Maruti DZire and the Ford Figo Aspire starting at approximately Rs. 5.80 lakhs going up to Rs. 9 lakhs.

RE: Ford Fiesta ST: Driven

RE: Ford Fiesta ST: Driven

Ford Fiesta ST: Driven
Is Ford's 'warm' Fiesta hot enough to nibble the heels of incoming new wave hot hatches?

Is Ford's 'warm' Fiesta hot enough to nibble the heels of incoming new wave hot hatches? PH finds out

The new Fiesta ST has an interesting ancestry. XR2 and XR2i, RS 1800 and Turbo ... all famous names. But not, truly, great cars. Back then it had to be French. In fact it had to be Peugeot, really. Those Fords lacked the supple sophistication of the Pugs, the chassis adjustability and the panache.

A cheeky terrier nibbling at the heels of hot hatches

So it seems particularly fitting that this launch takes place on French mountain roads as the Fiesta tries to assert itself over a coming wave of new hot hatches from Renault and Peugeot.

To this end, the Fiesta gets suited out in a chunky new body kit and equipped with the excellent 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine. This all-aluminium engine has direct injection, low-inertia turbocharging and variable cam timing and produces 182hp and a peak torque figure of 177lb ft. There is an overboost feature that allows a limited delivery of 200hp and 214lb ft, too. That equates to 0-62mph in under seven seconds and a top speed of 137mph. Ride height is lowered by 15mm while revised front suspension knuckles optimise camber and increase the gearing on the (tweaked) electric PAS from 14.6:1 to 13.6:1. Wheels are 17-inchers, wrapped in 205-section rubber, hiding vented 278mm discs at the front and discs at the rear too.

Revised front suspension with faster steering

Jack of all
So to the test route, and an initial slog of town and motorway - a chance to get acquainted and see whether the Fiesta can deal with the daily grind as all good hot hatches should. The steering is light at low speed, the gearshift sweet and accurate. There's enough low-rev boost from the engine to facilitate easy ducking and weaving through the maelstrom of battered Peugeots and rusting Renaults and the ride, though taut, is compliant enough to feather the edges from the pitted and pot-holed roads.

Light and airy, the Fiesta cabin already combines striking design with user-friendliness but here adds alloy pedals, a chunky steering wheel, fist-filling gear knob and hip-hugging Recaro seats. The wider spec is impressive, too: sat-nav, Bluetooth, keyless entry and start, rain sensitive wipers - you certainly don't feel short changed. Refinement is good with wind and road noise well-suppressed and the engine discreet but responsive.

Overboost gives you 200hp for limited bursts

Of course, none of this really matters, does it? Or rather, it matters less. And it just so happens that as we spear into the Alpes-Maritimes, the traffic melts away, the sun reveals itself and a choir of angels fills the cabin with an eerie wail. Or that could be the tyres.

Actually, there is remarkably little tyre squeal and almost no discernible interference from the electro-nanny. The car just feels planted. Stable, eager to turn in, committed to your chosen line and fabulously neutral should you feel the need to trim your stance with either more or less throttle.

Scream if you want to go faster
You don't really need to build up to the ST - it is so confidence-inspiring that you can just grab it by the scruff of the neck and charge. It has a wonderful fluidity that allows effortlessly fast progress and it feels light and nimble, too. There's a little body roll but it's actually helpful and it quickly settles in to turns, retaining enough elasticity to soak up mid-corner bumps and undulations.

Hugely confidence inspiring and fun with it

The second day's driving serves up more of the same including the fabulous Col de Vence, enabling exploration of as much of the ST's dynamic repertoire as you could wish for.

The more you push, the harder you try, the better the Fez becomes. The engine is smooth and gutsy and although it doesn't emit the most blood-curdling of battle cries, the Ford Sound Symposer allows a little fruitiness into the cabin. The wide torque spread melts seamlessly into the top end power peak giving you plenty of poke from 1,500rpm all the way to the rev limiter just north of 6,000rpm.

Yesterday I'd been happy to leave the traction control to do its thing and never felt that the electronics were spoiling the fun. But with the electronic stability program switched off (the torque vectoring always remains active) there is a bit more leeway to spin up the wheels or back the car in off the throttle. Mind you, a bit of gentle understeer with the former and a smidge of wheel-cocking lift-off oversteer with the latter is about as wild as things get., the ST and retains its composure and good manners even under duress. It lacks the hint of menace and danger - a certain edginess - of traditional hot hatches and, for some, that will count as a negative. But don't think for a second that makes it a dull proposition.

Just jump in and drive it like you stole it

Classic ingredients
I've driven these roads in plenty of quick machines over the years, from Caterhams to 911s to the ST's revered sibling, the Focus RS. Few, if any, drives top our final blast down the Col de Vence in the ST. Playful, poised and plenty fast enough, you really feel you can exploit everything the car has. You can wring every last horsepower from the EcoBoost engine and use every last bit of grip. It's that engaging accessibility that defines a really terrific hot hatch; this car makes you feel like a driving superstar. Whether it would still feel so special in the presence of the new Clio or the 208 GTI remains to be seen - but if not, it will mean the others are bloody impressive. It'll certainly make for a hell of a group test.

Ford has extremely high hopes for the ST in the UK, forecasts of 5,000 per year equalling half of the total European production. At £16,995, the ST undercuts its key rivals by £2,000 (although the ST2 adds partial leather, heated seating, LED running lights, privacy glass and an uprated Sony CD/DAB radio for an extra £1,000). Decent residuals (50 per cent over three years), an insurance-friendly Cat 1 security system and respectable CO2 and mpg all add to the appeal too. It'll also be a stonkingly good all-rounder. In fact, I'd go so far as to say, it's one of the most fun, engaging and talented hot hatches money can buy. Renault, it's over to you...

RE: Driven: Ford Transit SuperSportVan

RE: Driven: Ford Transit SuperSportVan

Thursday 3rd May 2012
Driven: Ford Transit SuperSportVan
This brash one-off Transit is more than just a natty paint job
More than six million examples of the humble Ford Transit van - "the backbone of Britain", as its advertising slogan used to say - have been built since 1965, and along the way the Blue Oval has forged a habit of slotting a mad engine into the commercial load-lugger.

First came the Supervan I in 1971, based on the running gear of the GT40 Le Mans car, then the Supervan II, and a decade later, you guessed it, the Supervan III. Both sported F1 V8s - the latter giving a colossal 650hp at 13,000rpm.

Of course these three Transits, well, weren't really Transits. They were all based on mid-engined racecar chassis, meaning there wasn't room for so much as a bag of cement in the back.

Not your normal Transit
Ford's latest power-crazed Transit is a proper cargo-carrier, it's way out of builder territory and closer to a touring car racer in its spec. Which, incidentally, is the class the SuperSportVan will be racing in at this year's Cholmondeley Pageant of Power - more on that later.

It's all Transit underneath, but this is definitely not your average blue-collar Ford. White 19-inch split-rim alloys are combined with 40-profile tyres all-round, and the SuperSportVan's muscular bodykit and day-glow graphics not-so-subtly hint at the Transit's sporting intent.

For motive power, the SuperSportVan employs a 200hp 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel motor - borrowed from the 4.25-tonne Transit Jumbo - shoehorned into the smallest, shortest-wheelbase chassis on you can get in a Transit, and fitted with rear-wheel-drive running gear.

While it has hot hatch levels of power, the real key to the Transit's speed is the engine's 347lb ft of torque. Produced in a nice fat band between 1,700rpm and 2,500rpm - quite wide for a diesel and given the engine only spins to 4,500rpm - it promises more than a smidgen of pace...

Oversteer? In a Transit?
With a live rear axle, very little weight over the rear and more torque than a new Porsche 911 Carrera S, the Transit's 275-section rear tyres struggle to keep traction. Add in some lock and the SuperSportVan will very readily swing its ample rump sideways.

Equally, a standing start or sudden application of the throttle fires the van into a bout of violent axle tramp that can only be cured by lifting off and starting all over again - the traction control makes a valiant effort to curtail the pogo-ing rear end, but it's always fighting a losing battle.

The chassis is stiff - very stiff - and pitches around on the road, while the lack of weight at the rear doesn't help either. But there is some compliancy, even if you can tell a Transit was never designed to ride on 19-inch wheels.

The van's modified suspension geometry - just look at the camber of those front wheels - means the steering is heavy, but it gives great feedback, even if the high, upright driving position seems at odds with the cornering speeds.

Sitting in the Recaro bucket seats, you expect your legs to stretch out in front of you and the wheel to be in your chest. Instead, it's like sitting down for your tea and holding your dinner plate. It's a very weird sensation.

Cholmondeley Pageant of Power
The SuperSportVan is competing in the Rally and Touring Car class at this year's Cholmondeley Pageant of Power - the Cheshire-based event that's grown into one of the largest petrolhead festivals of exotic machinery on offer (Don't call it the Festival of Speed of the North! - Ed).

Alongside the van, there'll be everything from pre-war aero-engined Grand Prix cars to modern-day supercar royalty - such as the Lamborghini Aventador and McLaren F1 MP4-12C - vying to beat the 63.54 second sprint record set by Nikki Faulkner in his Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Performante in 2011.

Alive on track
On the road, the SuperSportVan is good, but on the claustrophobic Cholmondeley track it comes alive. Squeeze the throttle out of the slow turns, wait for the boost to come in, and the Transit's chassis copes much better.

Through the technical chicane section the van shows its weight, though, and the long brake pedal means you always carry a bit more speed into a turn than you intended. But it highlights the machine's surprising agility.

It might look gaudy and brash from the outside (which we secretly love) but the SuperSportVan is a seriously trick machine that proves Ford has a sense of humour.

Volkswagen India revealed the Ameo subcompact sedan this month just before the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The car will compete with the likes of the Maruti DZire, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest. There will be two engines on offer – a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine. For the first time in this segment, the Volkswagen Ameo will bring a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox mated to a diesel engine. The Volkswagen Ameo will be also exported from India to relevant markets.

Volkswagen first showed us the Taigun sub-compact SUV concept at the 2012  Paulo Motor Show with a 1.0-liter TSI turbocharged petrol engine, producing 110  and 175 Newton metre of torque. The car was expected to hit production this year, but according to a report, Volkswagen has scrapped the idea of a sub-compact SUV and will not make the Volkswagen Taigun into a production model.

The Volkswagen Taigun is not seeing production!!

Taigun may have received development funding in 2014, as this press document suggests: “At EUR 41.3 billion (roughly 64 percent), the Group will spend most of the total CAPEX in the Automotive Division on modernizing and extending the product range for all its brands. The main focus will be on expanding the SUV range – in particular in the A/A0 class – as well as on modernizing part of the light commercial vehicle portfolio.” but the reason given now are that the car is too short to make.

“The car, as we have shown so far, is too short,” a spokesman from Wolfsburg has told the Focus publication in Germany.  Recently it was reported the model was sacked because of the financial instability in South American countries but now the reason is slightly different.

Taigun was a five seater SUV.

Volkswagen will instead launch a Polo-based SUV that will go on sale in 2018. It will reportedly be previewed as early as the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in early March. It is rumored to  ride on a micro version of the MQB used by the Golf.

While internationally the demand for larger SUV’s is growing, Indian market demands completely different. Indians are just warming up to SUV’s and not necessarily, everyone can afford one. The sub-compact segment of SUV’s is doing great here and the demand will only go higher. Volkswagen has just unveiled the sub-4 metre sedan Ameo in India and needs to be seen if it generates the numbers desired which might be a pre-cursor to another compact SUV for the Indian market.

The Volkswagen Ameo has been caught completely undisguised for the very first time just before its official launch in a couple of weeks time at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo.

2016 Volkswagen Ameo Rear Spied

2016 Volkswagen Ameo Rear Spied

Volkswagen is all set to launch their first made in India and made for India sub 4-metre sedan Ameo at the 2016 Auto Expo next month. But the car was recently caught completely undisguised revealing the rear end of the vehicle. The rear in typical German fashion looks understated and built for a purpose. The taillight assembly is a redesigned version of the Polo’s taillight with similar detailing too. The area around the number plate seems to be lifted from the Rapid sedan and reflectors on the bumper round off things at the rear. The front will be a copy paste job of the Polo hatchback with similar smoked out double barrel headlamps.

Engine options are expected to be carried over from the Polo hatchback, which means this car will get a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol that develops 75BHP and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel that develops 89BHP. Both engines will be offered with a slick 5-speed manual gearbox but it is unsure whether Volkswagen will offer the TSI-DSG combo on the Ameo. On the insides, the car will get an interior similar to the Polo with a multifunction flat bottom steering wheel, the infotainment system and the interior colour theme too. The Volkswagen Ameo will have class leading build quality and a premium appeal in its segment.

The Volkswagen Ameo is expected to be priced slightly higher than its competitors like the Maruti DZire and the Ford Figo Aspire starting at approximately Rs. 5.80 lakhs going up to Rs. 9 lakhs. Volkswagen will be also showcasing the Tiguan SUV and the Passat GTE at the 2016 Auto Expo. The Tiguan is basically a Honda CR-V and Skoda Yeti rival while the the Passat GTE is a plug-in hybrid variant of the Passat sedan and is powered by a 1.4-litre TSI engine that develops 156PS in conjunction with an electric motor. The 21st century Volkswagen Beetle that was launched last month in India will also be on display at the Volkswagen stand.

Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled a stylish SUV Coupe based on the XUV500 called as the XUV Aero. The front resembles that of the XUV500 SUV while the rear looks completely reworked. Being a concept, the car features oversized everything like the wheel arches and wheels. There are two huge front doors and has a pair of tiny rear suicide doors (open towards the rear). The coupe like rear end features a long windscreen and three-piece vertical taillights, something like the Komodo Concept that was revealed a couple of years back. The Komodo Concept was more of a design study and never made it even to the clay model stage. But looks like Mahindra has taken inputs from that design more recently.

Mahindra recently bought a controlling stake in Italian design marque Pininfarina. The Mahindra XUV500 Aero could be another design study by the company in India but we would more than accept if Mahindra plans to bring such a model out on the roads. No one in India has dared to enter into the SUV Coupe and globally only a couple of German manufacturers have given a throw at it. The XUV500 Aero is definitely something that we are looking forward to see in production, as a halo product in Mahindra’s portfolio.

The E2O Sports has a high output electric motor that develops 105kW (143PS) and 180Nm of torque right from standstill. This enables the car to reach 100Km/hr in just 8 seconds with a top speed of 120Km/hr (claimed). Datsun Go Plus Playstation Concept Showcased at Indian Auto Expo 2016

Datsun’s Go Plus MPV has been on sale here in India for quite some time now.

Datsun unveiled a customized version of its GO Plus MPVat this year’s Auto Expo. The Japanese car maker showcased a slightly modified Go Plus particularly targeted at gamers.

The customized Datsun Go Plus Playstation Concept MPV on display sported a minimal revamp of the car’s exterior.

Datsun’s Go Plus MPV has been on sale here in India for quite some time now. The Japanese compact MPV competes in the same segment as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Chevy Spin, Honda Mobilio and Renault Lodgy. However, its extremely low price point ensures it belongs to a segment of its own. For the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, Datsun showcased how extensively the Go Plus MPV can be customized to suit the needs of any prospective buyer. The front fabric seats have been replaced by sportier blue&black leather units with neon blue ambient lighting. Datsun has completely removed the second and third row of seats and in its place, has fitted the Japanese MPV with a gaming setup replete with dual monitors, sound bar, two PS4s, racing pedals & steering wheel and controllers. To make space for the monitors, PS4 units and racing setup, the rear passengers must make do with a single small row of seats located at the back of the MPV.

The interior of the Datsun Go Plus Playstation Concept features two PS4 units, an F&D spund bar, racing simulator setup and controllers.

Exterior changes include side decals, roof mounted spoiler and upmarket rims. However, the dull brown color scheme of its shell is in stark contrast to the car’s sporty interiors. While this Go Plus concept makes for an interesting variant, it is unlikely that the manufacturer will put it into production.

The modified Datsun Go Plus Playstation Concept MPV was also fitted with blue lighting.

The spy pictures gives us the closest look as to what the successor to the DB9 could look like. As expected the DB11 will not be very different in the overall shape when compared to the DB9. But it will be much sharper than its predecessor to look at. At the front, the traditional Aston Martin grille continues while the coupe body has hints of the Jaguar F-Type Coupe and the DB10. It also gets twin exhaust pipes. The dash displays and interfaces in the test car have been taken from the S-Class Coupe but it is unclear if this will be continued in the production car as well.

The 5.9 litre naturally aspirated V12 engine in the DB9 will be replaced by a brand new 5.2 litre turbocharged engine in DB11. While the old naturally aspirated engine made a maximum power of 568 bhp in the Vanquish, the new turbocharged is expected to make around 600 bhp. The new engine has been developed in-house by Aston Martin.

There are rumors that the British company could introduce a new smaller V8 engine to the DB9 line-up. The new engine will be sourced from AMG and will be the new 4.0 litre turbocharged unit that powers the AMG GT and other top end performance cars like the C 63. While the naturally aspirated engine makes a maximum power of 430 bhp, the AMG engine makes a maximum power of 510 bhp.

The Aston Martin DB11 might be showcased at the Geneva Motor Show next month and the car will reach showrooms by the end of the year. It will replace the DB9, which is around 12 years old. Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer said that some people say that all of their cars look similar. This will be solved with the next generation of cars. So expect major changes at the front, rear and on the inside.

Mahindra TUV300 Completely Revealed

Mahindra TUV300 Completely Revealed

Mahindra TUV300 has been caught off-guard before launch at Mahindra Chakan plant on 10th September, 2015.

Mahindra TUV300 looks nothing like its rival, Tata Sumo, but does have a hint of FCA Jeep’s front fascia.

Mahindra TUV300is designed based on the theme of a Military Tank, bred with the essence of toughness in every styling element. Further, add-on kits for TUV300 will be sold at Mahindra dealerships once the car goes on sale.

The tall body and narrow day light opening design is reminiscent of Range Rover Evoque.

Designed by the company’s design studio in Kandivli, Mumbai with inputs from Pininfarina, and engineered at Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, Mahindra TUV300 is shaped to be a true blue SUV, not a soft crossover that can’t bear the ruggedness of a natural course into the woods. Based on an all-new platform, most probably a re-engineered version of Scorpio’s third generation hydroformed ladder-frame chassis, the TUV300 will combine the looks of a modern SUV with the DNA of a monstrous off-roader. Yet a Four Wheel Drive will not be offered, for now.

Rear end of Mahidnra TUV300 looks similar to Mahindra Quanto’s.

Mahindra also revealed the engine branding for TUV300, which is “Powered By mHawk 80″. This indicates, as well as is confirmed by the officials, that Mahindra TUV300 will not be powered by any existing engine, especially not the Quanto’s as per speculations. The motor powering the TUV300 should be a downsized version of 2.2 litre mHawk engine doing duty in products like Mahindra XUV500, Scorpio and some variants of Xylo too.

The TUV300 is a global SUV, waiting to be shipped to a good number of international markets, including those which have drivers sitting at the left.

Except for the very recently launched Hyundai Creta compact crossover, every Hyundai car will be made dearer from 1st of August, 2015.

compact crossover, every Hyundai car will be made dearer from 1st of August, 2015. This Hyundai price hike goes all the way up to Rs. 30,000, in the ex-showroom prices of each variant.

Following the price hike by several OEMs when the calendar turned leaf, this revision is also necessitated by rising input costs.

Inspite of HMIL chopping a good number of features off the Elite i20 recently, and pretty silently, it seems the Honda Jazzcompetitor will also get new and higher price tags. When the features were skimmed, price of Hyundai i20 was not brought down. The new price of Elite i20 should include the touchscreen equipped infotainment system, in top end variants.

Rakesh Srivastava, Senior Vice President (Sales and Marketing), Hyundai Motor India, said that the company has been absorbing the rise in input costs for quite some time, but the challenging market conditions have forced the company to pass on the extra costs to the customers now.

Hyundai price hike will affect every model in the showroom (except Creta), from Eon A-segment hatchback to Santa Fe D-segment SUV. The current price range of Hyundai cars in India is from Rs. 3.08 lakhs to Rs. 30.21 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). Degree of price increase of each model is expected to be formally announced by Hyundai Motor India Limited on the same day the hike will be effected, August 1, 2015.

Hyundai Creta was launched on 21st July, 2015 at a price range of Rs. 8.59 lakhs to Rs. 13.60 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).

Hyundai is the second largest carmaker in India after Maruti Suzuki, with 17 percent market share which is less than half of the latter’s. The South Korean brand has been ahead of the Japanese in introducing and breaking success in premium hatchback and compact crossover segments, with Elite i20 and Creta respectively. Next year, Hyundai is believed to be launching an MPV which will rival Maruti Ertigaand Honda Mobilio.
