Ever since Tesla Motors launched the Autopilot system for its cars, many owners have taken videos of the system in action. But some have been trying to push the limits of the system by trying on roads it was not designed for. One owner even decided to move into the back seat of the car while the autopilot function was driving the car.
When launching the update Tesla had laid out a few rules for customers to follow while using the system such as using the system only on a multi-lane highway and keeping your hands on the steering wheel at all times when the autopilot system is switched on. Clearly, these rules are not being followed.
These actions by some customers have resulted in many reported near misses. Though no accidents have been reported due to the new update, Tesla Motors CEO, Elon Musk has decided to add a few constraints to the new system. “This is not good. We’ll put on some constraints on Autopilot to minimize people doing crazy things with it,” he said.
Mercedes-Benz was the first to introduce autonomous driving in the 2014 S-Class, which came with a feature called Steering Assist. This allows you to switch on autonomous driving to be switched on only on highways and will work only when the driver’s hands are on the steering wheel. Tesla could introduce similar systems to the Model S to make autonomous driving safer.
Based in Palo Alto, California, the company specializes in manufacturing electric luxury cars. Their first car was the Tesla Roadster. The Model S sedan and the Model XSUV are the two vehicles currently on sale by the American company. A new model called the Model 3 could soon join the line-up. The top of the line variants of their cars have supercar-rivalling performance figures. The CEO of the electric car manufacturer is Elon Musk who also co-founded it in 2003. Tesla’s cars are currently not on sale in India, mainly because, they will be too expensive to be sold here. Hopefully, we will see these cars on Indian roads soon.
