Finally, after years of speculation, Lexus has confirmed that they will be entering India sometime around August this year. They will bring in three cars and all of them will be hybrids. Other variants will not be available immediately. Toyota’s boss for the Asia/Middle East/North Africa regions, Kyoichi Tanada says that this because of the increase in environmental concerns in the country and the government requirements. The Lexus brand will compete against BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz. They plan to sell 1,000 to 3,500 cars by 2018 and more than 5,000 by 2020.
Lexus RX 450h hybrid
Leading the Lexus charge will be the RX 450h from the popular RX range of SUVs. It will be powered by a 3.5 litre V6 engine working in tandem with an electric motor. The total combined power output will be 308 bhp and all of it will be sent to the front wheels. The SUV will accelerate from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 7.8 seconds. It returns 12.75 kms to a litre of fuel. The Lexus RX 450h will compete with the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque.
Lexus GS 450h hybrid
The smallest sedan will be the GS 450h. It will have the same powertrain as the RX 450h but the total combined power output will be increased to 338 bhp. The sedan will accelerate from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 5.6 seconds. It returns 14.45 kms to a litre of fuel. The Lexus GS 450h will compete with the Audi A6, Jaguar XF, BMW 5-series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Lexus LS 600h hybrid
The flagship car will be the luxurious LS 600h. It will be powered by 5.0 litre V8 paired to an electric motor. The total combined power output will be around 438 bhp and it will be sent to all four wheels. The sedan will accelerate from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 5.6 seconds. It returns 9.78 kms to a litre of fuel. The Lexus LS 600h will compete with the Audi A8, Jaguar XJ, BMW 7-series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
