The 2016 BMW i8 has been on sale here in India for quite some time now. The flagship model from the manufacturer’s i division, the i8 has been touted to be the ideal portrayal of the near future where most vehicles will need to migrate to hybrid or even fully electric powertrains. Powering the two door coupe is a 1.3 l turbocharged three cylinder petrol mill that churns out 228 hp at 5800 RPM and a peak torque of 319 Nm at 3700 RPM. The mid mounted engine works in tandem with a front mounted electric motor that delivers 129 hp @ 4900 rpm and 249 Nm of peak torque. With a combined power output of 357 hp and 569 Nm of torque. While power from the front motor is delivered via a two speed gearbox, the mid engine turns the rear wheels via a six speed automatic with manual shifting mode. Although the exteriors of the car harks to the future, the interior is decidedly the present. The 2016 i8 sports the Bavarian car maker’s familiar iDrive system along with a conventional gear selector and steering wheel.

Originally showcased many years ago as the Vision Efficient Dynamics, the BMW i8 has changed little visually. With its swan doors, sharp nose, supercar profile, floating roof line and laser headlights, the hybrid sports car maintains similar levels of visual drama as its concept predecessors. Despite the tiny engine, the i8’s lightweight frame enables it to propel itself to the 100 kmph mark in a mere 3.6 seconds.
