Their current line-up includes the Model Ssedan and the Model X SUV. They will be launching the Model 3compact sedan later. The Model X was first shown at Tesla’s design studios in Los Angeles on February 9th 2012. It is a full-size luxury crossover SUV. The SUV is based on the Model S. Production was supposed to start by the end of 2013 but was postponed due to a few reasons. Tesla has finally the much-awaited SUV and it has been priced at $132,000. It will be manufactured at the Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California.
In the design of an electric car, aerodynamics is key in keeping the range high. Hence, it has been given high importance in the Model X. Its drag coefficient is only 0.24. This is 20% lower than the next best SUV. This is possible due to its sleek coupe-like roofline. In addition to this, the SUV gets an automatically deploying active rear spoiler that can be set to one of three preset positions. It also gets heated power folding outside rear view mirrors.
One of the main design features of the Model X is the falcon doorswith built-in sensors. The Model X gets falcon doors for the rear seats. These seats are similar to the gullwing doors which open upwards. The gullwing doors are hinged on the roof. This is the same with the falcon doors. But along with that, they have another hinge in the middle. This gives them flexibility and adds to the maneuverability. The doors can now be used in tight parking spaces.
Stepping inside the SUV, we find that the dash is similar to the Model S. It gets a larger ipad-like touchscreen system that helps control all the functionalities of the SUV. The Model X also gets the largest windshield in any production car. It is solar tinted with UV protection. The Model X can be chosen as a 6-seater or a 7-seater. The cabin, including the seats are available in three themes: Ultra White, Tan Leather and Black leather. The SUV gets maps and navigation with real-time traffic updates. Absence of engines and transmission has freed up a lot of space. The SUV gets two cargo areas. The rear cargo area is large enough to store bikes, ski and snowboards. The front cargo area is enough to store luggage, strollers or even two golf bags. A HEPA filter is used to remove pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution from the cabin air.
The Tesla Model X is powered by two electric motors. One motor powers the front wheels while the other powers the rear wheels. Power is sourced from a 90 kWh battery pack. The Model X is available in two variants: 90D and the P90D. The P90D variant is the fastest accelerating SUV in the world. The Tesla SUV also has the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds.
The P90D All-Wheel Drive is powered by a 259 bhp motor at the front and a 259 bhp motor at the rear. The SUV accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 4.9 seconds and it goes on to a top speed of 250 kmph. The estimated range of the vehicle is 414 kms.
The P90D Performance All-Wheel Drive is powered by a 259 bhp motor at the front and a 503 bhp motor at the rear. The SUV accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in 3.9 seconds. This can brought down to 3.3 seconds with the Ludicrous Speed Upgrade. The electric vehicle goes to a top speed of 250 kmph. The estimated range of the vehicle is 402 kms.
Safety is given top priority in the Model X. The battery pack is mounted low down. This reduces the risk of a rollover. The battery pack structure also strengthens the SUV against side impacts. The absence of an engine bay helps absorb large amounts of energy during a frontal impact collision. Along with this, the SUV gets safety technologies like Active Safety which uses cameras, radars and sonar systems to scan the vehicle’s surroundings. Real-time feedback is given to the driver. During an emergency, the Model X automatically applies the brakes. This is done even at highway speeds.
The much-awaited Model X is a very popular SUV. There are already 30,000 bookings. The current waiting time is nearly one year.
