Honda Concept D Crossover SUV Premiered at Auto Shanghai 2015

As it turns out, Nissan is not the only Japanese auto manufacturer who is betting big on the buying potential of the Chinese youth. While the brand unveiled the production-spec Lannia sedan, targeting Chinese customers who are born later than 1980, its rival debuted the Honda Concept D Crossover SUV which appears to be previewing a funky product, also targeting the nation’s younger audience.

The Concept D previews a China-only flagship product.

The design of the concept will certainly polarize opinions. The overdone front fascia sports Acura-like narrow LED headlights but it is overshadowed by the audacious grille and a cluttered bumper with huge air vents. A bonnet with well pronounced power bulge and blackened A-pillars (to create a wraparound windshield effect) round off the front end design.

In profile, the crossover concept features a tapering roofline, 21-inch alloy wheels, a long greenhouse, flared wheel arches and massive skirts. The rear is characterized by prominent C-shaped LED taillights and an outrageous bumper. Not to mention the odd looking spoiler. The concept is a design study whose objective is to garner public opinions and we will let you decide whether you like it or not.

The front fascia is overdone with super aggressive bumper.

Honda has not revealed the powertrain details of the design study but we can’t help notice the absence of exhaust tip. It could be developed as an EV.

Honda says that the concept will indeed spawn a production version (we hope the design is overhauled before that happens) in the future. The resulting product will be the flagship model for the company in China. Expect advanced features and safety equipment.

The rear too features over sized bumper vents.

Honda has been upbeat about the prospects of compact crossovers in China as evident from the launch of HR-Vand a slightly different XR-V last year. The production version of the Honda Concept D appears to be a more premium variant of the same crossover family.
