, Nick Robinson, Dynamic Development Leader on the NSX project, confirmed that although it is not official, Honda is looking to produces a hardcore, lighter and track-focused version of the NSX called the NSX Type-R. The Honda NSX Type-R would be the next step in reviving the brand’s sporting heritage.

The Honda NSX Type-R will be a lightweight car. So lightweight exotic materials can be expected. The hybrid powertrain could also be removed from the car. This would make it a pure rear-wheel drive racer. A RWD NSX will be taking part at this year’s Pikes Peak and it is one of the two NSX cars to have Honda backing. It is powered by the twin-turbo V6 engine. The engine will be turbocharged and supercharged and will make more power than the regular car.
The current second generation Honda NSX is powered by a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine and three elctric motors. The petrol engine and one electric motor are powering the rear wheels while the front wheels are powered by an electric motor each. The total power output is 500 bhp. The car weighs 1,725 kgs, with the hybrid system alone weighing 150 kgs.
The Honda NSX competes with supercars the Porsche 911 Turbo, Ferrari 488 GTBand the Audi R8 V10. The Type-R, which will be a track-oriented car, will compete with the Porsche 911 GT3, Ferrari 458 Speciale and the Audi R8 V10 Plus.
A convertible version of the NSX could also be launched soon. The body is exceptionally rigid and adding a convertible roof should not have a major effect on the torsional rigidity of the car. “I’m not that convinced by a convertible myself yet, but technically it’s possible,” Robinson said.
