The production of the new Ford Focus RS has begun at Ford’s assembly line in Saarlouis, Germany.

The production of the new Ford Focus RS has begun at Ford’s assembly line in Saarlouis, Germany. The third generation of the Focus RS made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show last year and unlike the previous two generations, the Focus RS will be sold in the U.S for the very first time. Till now it was available only in Europe.

The current generation Focus RS is powered by a 2.3 litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 350 bhp and 475 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and power is sent to all four wheels. The car accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in just 4.8 seconds and the goes on to a top speed of 265 kmph. For the same sprint, the Mercedes-AMG A45 is five tenths quicker while the Audi RS3 is four tenths quicker. The new Focus RS rides on 19-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sports rubber.The car weighs 1,542 kgs.

The new Focus RS joins the Focus ST, Fiesta ST, Mustang GT350 and the Mustang GT350R in the American company’s performance line-up. They will soon be joined by the F-150 Raptor and the GT supercar. By 2020, Ford aims to have around 12 performance vehicles in its global market.

Ford is expected to build an even faster Focus RS and other Ford RS models

They are planning more RS models but it is unclear which are the models to get the performance oriented variant. The Fiesta hatchback, Mondeo sedan and the Kuga compact SUV are likely to be inducted into the RS program. For the Focus RS, Ford is planning an more powerful and hardcore version that will be more lightweight. It could become the world’s fastest hatchback.
