Far fetched? Online petition surfaces to award Elon Musk Nobel Prize

1000 people have signed the petition on Change.org requesting the Swedish Nobel Committee, to award Mr.

Swedish Nobel Committee, to award Mr. Elon Musk, a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

Edward Tanas of Calgary, Canada has filed a petition to award Elon Musk Nobel Prize in the category of Economic Sciences as “Mr. Musk has spent most of his life helping not only to help the economics of transportation flourish with technological breakthroughs but has done so in a manner that addresses climate change.”

The petition further adds that his company, Tesla Motorshas received 253,000 orders for its affordable electric car Model 3which “has helped to reduce the impact on the environment by replacing internal combustion engine vehicles.”

Tesla Model 3

We completely agree that Elon Musk has changed the world how electric cars are perceived but the reality as of now is far from what is being put forth as the reason. The company has till date sold give or take 50,000 cars, all of which are expensive. In a world where tens of millions of cars are sold a year, this is a drop in the ocean. It could be a start of something genuinely great but technological and manufacturing hurdles Tesla have kept the company going for large scale production. It is going to be a real test of Elon Musk and team to deliver all the orders beginning late 2017 as promised, going by the history it doesn’t look great.

Other projects initiated by Elon Musk are taking baby steps and have not changed the world. Sure, Musk should be credited for doing the implausible time and again with SpaceX and Hyperloopand many others. I declare myself an Elon Musk fanboy but at this point in time, merely on the basis of the orders racked up by Model 3, a Nobel Prize seems bit of a stretch. But then hey!! If Malala can get a Nobel peace prize at 17 then surely Elon has done mind boggling things in his 44 years of existence on planet earth.
