Just recently, BMW set the D segment players scurrying for cover by pricing it’s 3 Series sedan at a shocking 25 Lakhs Ex-showroom. Now, it has long term ambitions in the soft roader segment dominated by the Honda CR-V. The Munich based auto maker will launch the X1 crossover SUV in early 2011. The X1 is all set to carry BMWs snob value to the masses by coming at an attractive price range of 20-22 lakhs ex-showroom. This will certainly ring warning bells at a certain Big Hs headquarters. The X1 might even eat away the market of Toyota’s Fortuner. This, because Indians usually don’t go fording across streams with their expensive SUVs.

This factor could cause a lot of moneyed Indians wanting the Fortuner, to instead go for the baby BMW which will certainly give them a little more cred at the country club. Now, coming to the X1 mechanicals, the X1 comes with a range of diesel and petrol power plants ranging from 1.8 litres to 2.8 litres. Power figures too vary between 144 to 268 Bhp depending upon the engine options. The interiors like any BMW are top class with plenty of playthings to keep most drivers engaged for quite some time. The X1 which was launched in October this year handles more like a car than an SUV considering it’s low stance. What the X1 owner will miss is the highish, intimidating stance of an SUV like the Fortuner. That, he or she will hope,  is compensated by the aura of the BMW badge on the bonnet.
