Back in 1966, on 26th September, Chevrolet launched the first generation of the Camaro muscle car to take on the mighty Mustang and the legendary rivalry began. Nearly 50 years on, the rivalry continues and to commemorate this achievement, the American company has launched a special edition called the Chevrolet Camaro 50th Anniversary Edition.

The special edition car gets only cosmetic changes

The special edition car is available as a coupe and as a convertible and is finished in a grey shade called Nightfall Gray Metallic. The convertible gets a black roof. Contrasting the dark colour, the muscle car comes with thin orange stripes on the hood, orange brake calipers and satin chrome accents on the front splitter. It gets a few new “Fifty” badges and new centre wheel caps. The vehicle rides on 20-inch wheels. On the inside, the muscle car gets an all-black leather interior with orange stitching and 50th Anniversary logos on the instrument panel, seat backs, steering wheel, and illuminated sill plates.

No mechanical changes are expected to the special edition Camaro. It will go on sale this summer and prices will be announced at a later date.

Powering the Chevrolet Camaro is a 6.2-litre V8 engine producing 455 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 616 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. It is mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 8-speed automatic transmission. It accelerates from a standstill to a 100 kmph in around 4.2 seconds. A four cylinder engine and a V6 engine is also available.

The sixth generation of the Camaro was recently launched in Detroit, Michigan. It is based on the GM Alpha platform that also underpins the Cadillac ATS. It comes equipped with a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated seats, interior lighting, HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights, a 9-speaker Bose premium sound system, smartphone integration, Heads-Up display, voice activated controls, wireless phone charging and an inbuilt 4G LTE Wifi connection.

The safety features include rear parking camera with rear parking assist, Electronic Stability Control system, Side Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and 8 airbags.

The muscle car competes against the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger and the Dodge Charger. The car was displayedat the Auto Expo in Delhi last month.
