For a car maker that has been producing passenger cars for less than a decade, Tata Motors Limited is progressing by leaps and bounds. Tata Motors first introduced it’s home grown small car, the Indica, in 1998 and back then the Indica was launched in both petrol and diesel variants. Needless to say, the Indica took India by storm and was a huge sales success. Now, Tata Motors plans to plonk in an electric motor into the Indica and the Indica EV could scuttle across Indian roads in 2011. Tata Motors has already started conducting market research on the same.

The Indica EV will be powered by a MФTIVETM series electric motor developed by TM4 and will run on Lithium Ion Batteries provided by Electrovaya. This will give the Indica a range of almost 200 kilometers on a single charge thus making it a very affordable yet pollution free means of transport in India. What we expect is that Tata will plonk in this electric motor into the Tata Indica Vista as the older Indica models are pretty long in their teeth. If this does happen and Tata manage to price it sensibly like they always have, they could once again revolutionize the Indian car industry as they would be amongst the first manufacturers to sell an affordable, everyday electric car.
