Volvo has introduced a innovative new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform that will spawn a whole lot of upcoming compact cars from the company. The company released a video showing the various possibilities and combinations of this new architecture on YouTube.

The Compact Modular Architecture is the smaller version of the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform but is said to be as advanced as the latter. The first car on the CMA platform is slated to launch anywhere during 2017 and will be followed by a host of new products on the same line. The CMA will allow a wide range of cars, power trains, electrical systems and technologies of varying complexity to be fitted on the same architecture, which help generate significant economies of scale and a more streamlined manufacturing process. It will borrow all safety technology from the bigger SPA platform that currently underpins the XC90 SUVand the upcoming S90 sedan.

Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research and Development, Volvo Car Group, said, “The flexibility of CMA liberates Volvo’s engineers and designers, allowing them to devise and introduce a wide range of new and alluring features whilst at the same time improving drivability, offering world-class safety features and connected car technologies. We are in a terrific position with CMA. We have developed this new architecture as a plug and play component. This means that on Volvo’s next generation of compact cars you will benefit from the advanced technologies available on our XC90 today.”

The first vehicle to the built on the CMA platform is rumouredly the all new XC40 SUV that will compete with the BMW X2 SUV

and will have similar coupe-like styling. Other cars under this platform will be a new crossover that will replace the existing V40 and V40 Cross-Country and all future cars positioned under the 60-series vehicles from Volvo. The CMA platform is designed to accommodate the new Volvo Drive-E engines that will include a 4-cylinder unit, a 3-cyinder unit and a plug-in hybrid too. The CMA and SPA platforms hold much resemblance to the MQB and MLB platforms from the Volkswagen Group.
