SUVs have no doubt been the trending or the preferred body shape by new car buyers in India in recent years. So each manufacturer is trying to bring in their own version into the market, while the existing ones are selling as fast as many C-segment sedans. We take a look at the top ten highest selling SUVs for the month of January 2016.
Hyundai Creta
Will it be surprising if we told you that five out of the top ten SUVs sold in India last month were Mahindras? Not quite, right? Well that’s the benefit of being an SUV manufacturer we guess. Just for the record, the Hyundai Creta was undoubtedly the best selling SUV last month with 6,589 units. The following four positions were taken by Mahindra SUVs namely Bolero (6,160 units), Scorpio (4,013 units), TUV300 (3,816 units) and KUV100 (3,413 units) in that order. The Bolero and Scorpio have always been strong sellers for Mahindra but the surprise was with the smaller SUVs especially the TUV300. The KUV100 was launched mid way last month but has still racked up pretty good numbers and expect it to go upwards.
Mahindra KUV100
The sixth position was taken by the Ford EcoSport with 3,047 units delivered and is selling quite well in spite the product being almost three years old now. The company had recently launched an updated version which have helped push the sales. The Mahindra XUV500 is next and is the number five Mahindra SUV on the list with 2,493 units sold. The car still remains a value for money buy and hence helped its sales quite a bit. Mahindra also launched a new base W4 variant sometime back which made owning this big 7-seat SUV even more affordable.
2015 Toyota Fortuner
Talking about SUVs and the Renault Duster doesn’t get a mention? That cannot happen, right? The butch SUV is at number eight for SUVs sold in January 2016 with 1,349 units. Next up is the Toyota Fortuner with 825 units which is pretty much class leading as it costs upwards of Rs. 25 lakhs. The new model too has shown its face internationally and despite that the SUV is selling strongly, is saying something about the ‘Fortuner’ brand. Last comes the Tata Safari with 575 units which is pretty less as the vehicle stands in the same category as the Mahindra Scorpio and shows the buyer’s preference for the other Indian brand.
