Hero MotoCorp today launched its new scooters, the Maestro Edge and Duet in India. The Maestro Edge has been priced at Rs. 49,500/- and Rs. 50,700/- for the LX and VX trims respectively with deliveries commencing on 13th October. Prices for the Duet have not been announced as yet and will be announced after the launch of the Maestro Edge. These are the company’s first scooters, fully engineered and developed by Hero MotoCorpwithout any help from former partner Honda.

The Maestro Edge and the Duet will be powered by a 110cc single cylinder engine with a power output of 8.3PS and 8.3Nm of torque. These scooters are squarely aimed at the Honda Activa range which is right now at its peak where sales are concerned. With the launch of these two scooters, Hero MotoCorp will want to take some part of the pie from Honda in the scooter segment. The Honda Activa had beat the Hero Splendor in terms of sales consecutively for the last three months. The world’s largest 2-wheeler manufacturerunderstands this situation well and hence wants to counter attack Honda with the Maestro Edge and Duet this festive season.

The specs to these two scooters were not unveiled until today. The Maestro Edge gets many first of its kind features like a USB 3.0 charging point under the seat, an LED taillight and a side stand indicator. The Duet on the hand gets an external fuel tank, integrated braking and a headlight pass switch while retaining the USB 3.0 charging port under the seat from the Maestro Edge. Also, both bikes will get a unique 5-year warranty. Hero has done a good job with the styling of both these scooters and will make some of the potential Activa buyers consider the new Hero offerings.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter Indiaholds an impressive 59 percent market share in India’s scooter segment. Hero on the other hand only had the Pleasure and the Maestro in their scooter line up which though in spite of selling well was nowhere close to the Activa in terms of sales. Last year, at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, Hero MotoCorp had unveiled 4 new scooters namely the Dash, Dare, Zir and the Leap Hybrid. While the Zir and the Leap Hybrid were mainly designed for the European market, the Dash and Dare seemed to be India specific with a 110cc and a 125cc single cylinder petrol engine respectively. Now does Hero MotoCorp’s new offerings have the calibre in it to beat the now iconic Honda Activa, is something only a full blown test ride will tell coming up later this week. Until then stay tuned to Indian Cars Bikes.
