Engine oils are largely advertised and petrochemical companies certainly have the money for it. However, in India the number of people who actually look at what they use as their engine’s life blood is negligible. Indian road conditions are far from forgiving, which is why it’s all the more necessary to put down your money on the can with the right label. Shell has just revealed their latest innovation in engine oil technology and has launched the Shell Helix Ultra with Pure Plus technology.
Nitin Prasad, MD, Shell Lubricants India
Pioneering an entirely new way to produce premium motor oils, Shell Helix Ultra PurePlus Technology is manufactured through a revolutionary Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) process that converts natural gas into a crystal-clear base oil with virtually none of the impurities which are found in crude oil. The result is Shell’s most advanced synthetic motor oil to date. The oil is produced at the Pearl Plant in Qatar through a partnership between Shell and Qatar Petroleum. It begins with the extraction of natural gas from Qatar’s North Field – the world’s largest natural gas field. In a gasifier, methane reacts with pure oxygen to produce synthesis gas. The synthesis gas then enters one of 24 reactors at the plant, where chains of hydrocarbons are rearranged and transformed into a liquid base oil that has the advantage of being more refined and purer than crude oil based engine oils.
The Helix Ultra Pure Plus has received OEM approvals from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan and General Motors (Chrysler included) in India. Shell claims that this new oil works on multiple fronts to not only provide better efficiency, but improve performance and engine life as well. The Helix Ultra Pure Plus is said to work on multiple fronts:
Balance
Fresh engine oil always degrades over time. Engine carbon, dust, grime and other impurities eventually wear down the oil which is why a periodic change is required. Some oils begin to vaporize over time which is why the car’s oil level dips and it needs a top up. If the oil doesn’t vaporize, it thickens and turns into sludge which chokes the engine and hampers the engine’s functioning. Private car owners in India rarely check up on this which is why the oil itself has to adapt, so Shell says they have engineered their new product to withstand the most pressurizing conditions without burning off with the fuel as far as possible, and to increase fuel efficiency by up to 3% as well. They have also given the Helix Ultra Pure Plus the right volatility, so it stays close to new for a longer period.
Cleaning up the engine
According to Shell, not only does the Helix Ultra Pure Plus prevent sludge build up, it also gradually clears up any sludge left over previously. The oil aims to provide the “just serviced” experience to owners and works towards getting the engine as close to its showroom conditions as possible. According to Shell’s tests, the Helix Ultra Pure Plus leaves the engine 65% cleaner than the industry standard.
Reduce Friction
Efficiency, performance and lower emissions. All three factors rely on reduced resistance on the engine. The H.U.P.P reduces friction in the short and long-term. By that, it means that the oil smoothens out the entire powertrain and also clings on to the components for as long as possible. Shell has focused on the start-up of the engine as it is a point where the engine is vulnerable. The Pure Plus technology helps the engine remain lubricated for as long as possible, so as to protect the engine from wear and tear till the oil has flowed through all the components, including the turbo charger (If any)
