Audi RS 3 sedan coming next year

Audi's high-performance RS 3 sedan will reportedly join the A3 and S3 sedans in U.S. showrooms next year. The RS 3 is currently available in the European market in Sportback form.

According to Car and Driver , the U.S.-spec RS 3 will arrive sometime in 2017 as a 2018 model year. The RS 3 will be powered by a 2.5L five-cylinder turbo, but it won't be the same mill found in the current Euro-spec RS 3. Audi is putting the finishing touches on an all-new 2.5L turbo-five that will debut later this year at the Beijing Motor Show.

That five-banger -- which will be shared with the next TT RS -- will reportedly develop about 400 horsepower, which would be enough to trump the 375 horsepower Mercedes-AMG CLA45. The current RS 3's five-cylinder is rated at 362 horsepower.

Shifting through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and Audi's quattro all-wheel drive, the RS 3 sedan will be capable of ripping from 0-60 in four-seconds flat. Depending on trim, the RS 3 will be able to hit a top speed of 174mph.

Given its scheduled 2017 introduction, the RS 3 sedan will be launching near the end of the A3's lifecycle. While good for keeping interest high in an aging vehicle, that late market launch means Audi will be missing out on higher-margin sales. Hopefully Audi has learned its lesson on that front and will introduce the next RS 3 much earlier in the car's lifecycle.

Audi's hottest convertible TT is spied being put through its paces at the Nurburging ahead of late 2016 launch

Audi 's stylish TT Roadster is about to get a whole lot more sporting, as our snappers have caught the RS model undergoing track testing.

is about to get a whole lot more sporting, as our snappers have caught the RS model undergoing track testing. It's expected to launch at the end of this year after the TT RS coupe.

As you'd expect, it will share the same powertrain as the coupe, which is almost certainly the turbocharged five-cylinder unit found in the RS3mega-hatch. In that form it produces 362bhp, but Audi may tune it even further to increase the performance gap between it and the 306bhp TT S.

Image 6 of 10

Audi will be benchmarking it against the newly released Mercedes SLC 43, which (conveniently) also has 362bhp thanks to a twin-turbocharged V6. But more driver-orientated cars like the flat-four turbo Porsche 718 Boxsterwill be considered as a target.

It will be able to handle any extra grunt thanks to the four-wheel drive system, while expect the choice of a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic transmission. With the latter fitted, expect to 0-62mph time to drop to - or even below - the four second mark.

Spotted testing alongside the TT RS Coupe, the Roadster styling upgrades appear relatively subtle behind the disguise. A lowered ride height, beefier front air intakes and a larger rear spoiler can be expected for production, while the tell-tale oval exhaust pipes also feature.

Will the Audi TT RS Roadster be better than the Mercedes SLC 43? Let us know your thoughts below...

Tesla planning for the end of EV tax credits

Tesla planning for the end of EV tax credits

Although there isn't a loophole to prevent the tax credit from drying up, there is a way to extend the program.

Tesla might have to shift its production plans for its Model 3sedan in order to maximize the number of federal tax credits available to buyers.

U.S. buyers of electric vehicles are currently eligible for up to a $7,500 federal tax credit, with all Tesla vehicles -- including the Model 3 -- qualifying for the maximum rebate. However, that credit starts to decline after an automaker hits 200,000 EVs, meaning most of the 325,000 peoplealready signed up to buy the Model 3 might miss out on the full tax rebate.

Although there isn't a loophole to prevent the tax credit from drying up, there is a way to extend the program. The IRS' rules state that the tax credit will be cut at the end of the quarter following the one in which an automaker hits that 200,000 EV limit, so Tesla could intentionally hit that magic number on the first day of the quarter, ensuring the maximum number of tax credits to buyers.

"We always try to maximize customer happiness even if that means a revenue shortfall in a quarter," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter.

Tesla doesn't release specific U.S. sales figures, but it's estimated that the electric automaker has sold about 71,500 combined units of its Model S sedan and Model X crossover.

Although some Model 3 buyers will miss out on the full tax credit, partial rebates will be available. After hitting the 200,000 unit sales mark the credit drops in half to $3,750 for the next two quarters. That figure is halved again for another two quarters before expiring entirely.

There has been some discussion in Washington about extending the program beyond 200,000 units, but so far nothing has been set in stone. Whatever the case, Tesla plans to be up front and honest with its buyers about the tax credit system.

"We are committed to providing customers with up-to-date information about current incentives at the time of purchase," Tesla spokeswoman Alexis Georgeson told Automotive News . "We'll do the same when it's time for customers to confirm their Model 3 orders."

The Tesla Model 3 is scheduled to go on sale in late 2017.

Jaguar hopes its sleek new XF can pick up where its predecessor left off, but first it has to beat the Audi A6...

Jaguar hopes its sleek new XF can pick up where its predecessor left off, but first it has to beat the Audi A6...

Jaguar launched its XF back in 2007 at a difficult time for the brand.

back in 2007 at a difficult time for the brand. Ford was getting ready to sell Jag to Tata Motors, and it’s fair to say that the XF helped the company achieve success while it moved from US to Indian ownership – so much so that it was named our 2008 Car of the Year.

The car’s modern design was a break from Jag’s traditional styling regime, and constant development has helped it to maintain its position at the front of the executive pack. Now it’s time for the second-generation model to make an appearance.

While the original XF was a radical departure from the S-Type that preceded it, the Mk2 model is an evolution, both in terms of design and engineering. This means that it should be a tough contender in the executive class.

For this first test, we’ve lined up the most powerful diesel version, the TDV6 S. It packs a 296bhp V6 twin-turbo engine and is loaded with kit, too; although it’ll have to be pretty special to beat its rival here, the Audi A6.

Here, we test the top-spec Black Edition model, which features a 316bhp twin-turbodiesel and quattro four-wheel drive. Does the second-generation XF pick up where the original left off? Or is the A6 the high-performance executive saloon to have?

Head to head
Wheel options

Both cars have 20-inch rims. The XF’s are an £800 option, while the A6’s come as standard. The Jaguar has standard 19-inch wheels, but offers 11 designs – ranging from £400-£1,200.

Image 7 of 17

Audi has two 20-inch alloy wheel options, plus there’s a 19-inch version that will help soften the ride a little. All are no-cost options.

Headlamp tech

Image 6 of 17

Jaguar and Audi are available with adaptive LEDs for £1,225 and £945 respectively. The XF’s give natural bright light, but the A6’s Matrix LEDs are something else. You can leave the main beams on and the lights seamlessly adapt to the road and other vehicles.

Bodystyles

The first XF came as an estate, but now Jaguar offers the F-Pace crossover, it’s thought a load-lugging version is unlikely. This 3.0 BiTDI A6 can be had as an Avant estate for an extra £2,165, while the top-spec A6 allroad crossover estate costs £55,825.

Verdict
1st place: Jaguar XF

Image 8 of 17

It was close, but it’s first blood to the new Jaguar XF. The sharper looks give it an edge over the A6, while under the skin, the car has been improved in the areas it needed to stay at the front of the pack, with greater efficiency giving it the edge over its rival here. It’s not as sporty as the Audi, but it’s fun. Plus, its ability to cover long distances in comfort seals the victory.

2nd place: Audi A6

Image 13 of 17

The A6 saloon is still a great executive, but the Black Edition’s firm ride spoils the overall package. The twin-turbodiesel has sports car-rivalling punch, yet the trade-off is higher running costs than the XF. You can save some cash with an S line version, but it’s still the pricier company car choice here. Comparing mass-market 2.0-litre models could throw up a different result, though.

Other options in this category...

BMW 535d M Sport Auto

Price: £48,920 Engine: 3.0-litre 6cyl, 313bhp

Like the A6, the 535d has a power advantage over the new XF, but this is countered by higher company car costs, despite its lower list price. The rear-drive BMW is arguably more engaging to drive, yet it’s not as sharply styled as the XF.

Mercedes E 350 BlueTEC AMG Night Edition

Price: £42,010 Engine: 3.0-litre V6, 258bhp

The E-Class is due to be replaced in 2016, so Mercedes is piling up the extras on its outgoing cars. The Night Edition adds a black styling pack, while the top-spec Premium Plus is around £4,000 less than the XF. It’s cheaper as a company car, too.

SEAT announces smaller SUV based on Ibiza platform, as Spanish firm posts first profit since 2008

SEAT announces smaller SUV based on Ibiza platform, as Spanish firm posts first profit since 2008

SEAT has confirmed that it will build a rival for the Nissan Juke and put the car on sale within the next 18 months.

and put the car on sale within the next 18 months. The Spanish manufacturer has been linked to a rapid expansion of its SUV line-up, with both a larger and smaller vehicle set to join the newly launched Atecain the range.

At the firm’s annual press conference in Madrid, new SEAT boss Luca de Meo confirmed that the Ibiza-based baby SUV will get the nod first, that it will be built at the company’s plant in Martorell near Barcelona and that it will go on sale in early 2017. A debut at next spring’s Geneva Motor Showis believed likely.

“This excellent news for both the brand and for our main factory,” said de Meo, ‘since it is the fastest growing segment and represents a firm step to become the third pillar of the company, with the families of the Ibiza and Leon.”

Image 2 of 4

The new small SUV is likely to be based on the smallest version of the VW Group’s MQB platform technology; indeed, company officials confirmed in Madrid that Martorell is already being adapted to build A0 cars on one of its production lines. The new SUV’s styling cues could well influence the next generation of the regular Ibiza supermini, which is scheduled to go on sale at some point in 2017.

The Ibiza SUV does not have a name, although SEAT registered a number of potential badges with trademark organisations late last year. Iqna is believed to be a leading contender, along with Teroqa and Teqta.

SEAT also confirmed at the conference that it made a profit after tax for the first time since 2008. The firm’s turnover rose by 11 per cent in 2015 to 8.3 billion euros, the highest figure in the company’s history and double what it posted back in 2009.

A full used car buyer’s guide on the SEAT Ibiza covering the Ibiza Mk4 (2008-date)

This year marks eight years since the SEAT Ibiza Mk4 was launched in the UK, but despite its age, regular facelifts and revisions have kept the car desirable and competitive.

Mk4 was launched in the UK, but despite its age, regular facelifts and revisions have kept the car desirable and competitive. Its modern, eye-catching design, reasonable prices, strong dynamics and low running costs mark it out in the class.

The Ibiza makes a brilliant used buy, especially for new drivers, who will be reassured by its five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. But this sharply styled superminiis also just the job for anybody who needs something fun and distinctive for the daily commute – whether it’s on the motorway, around town or anywhere in between.

Models covered

The SEAT Ibiza first hit the market in 1984, and has been through four generations to date. The Mk4 was released in 2008, and it’s this most recent model that we’re looking at here.

History

The five-door Ibiza Mk4 arrived in July 2008 in 1.2, 1.4 or 1.6-litre petrol forms; within four months, the three-door SC was on sale. Diesel 1.4 and 1.6-litre engines debuted in March 2009, four months before the 178bhp 1.4 TSI Ibiza Cupra. The mechanically identical Bocanegra, with its distinctive black nose, arrived in September 2009. The 1.2TDI Ecomotive appeared in July 2009, a year before the ultra-practical Ibiza ST, the Ibiza E Ecomotive and the zesty 1.2 TSI.

A facelifted Ibiza reached showrooms in January 2012, with revised styling, a higher-quality interior and a 1.2 TSI Ecomotive petrol option. Another refresh in autumn 2015 brought new engines, overhauled suspension, and hi-tech options.

SEAT Ibiza Mk4 reviews
Which one should I buy?

Manual and DSG transmissions are great to use, while the TSI and TDI engines feel punchy and offer decent economy; the regular 1.2 and 1.4 don’t sparkle as much. Entry-level S editions are best avoided, as they don’t offer a lot of kit.

Image 2 of 10

E spec is just as poorly equipped. These models come with remote central locking and a six-speaker CD/tuner, but you have to move up to the SE to get electric front windows, a trip computer, split folding rear seats, 15-inch wheels, ESP and a height-adjustable passenger seat. The Sport features firmer suspension, sports seats and 16-inch alloys. Options worth having include climate control, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors and the excellent Portable System Live removable multimedia.

Alternatives to the SEAT Ibiza Mk4

The Skoda Fabiaand VW Poloshare the Ibiza’s underpinnings, but there’s no estate version of the latter, while prices for an equivalent hatch are higher. One of the best all-rounders is the smart-looking Ford Fiesta, which is great fun to drive, well equipped and cheap to run, plus there’s a wide choice of engines and trims.

The Renault Clioand Peugeot 207are also worth a look, as they’re affordable and good to drive. Vauxhall’s Corsais also cheap to buy and run, plus it comes with lots of kit and offers a decent amount of cabin space. Less obvious (but excellent) alternatives include the Hyundai i20and Kia Rio, along with the Honda Jazz, which offers superb reliability with unrivalled practicality.

What to look for:
Air-con

Air-conditioning systems can be temperamental, so listen for hissing and see if the system produces cold air, as repairs can be costly.

Electrics

The electric windows are known for being unreliable, with motors shorting out leading to the mechanism going up or down of its own accord – or refusing to move.

Image 8 of 10

Rattling

Creaks, squeaks and rattles are far from unusual in the Ibiza, and the same goes for jammed cup-holders. These can be replaced easily without visiting a garage.

Rear washer

The rear windscreen washer mechanism occasionally stops working, often because the pipe that feeds it has come adrift, filling the boot with water.

Interior

Some of the interior plastics are disappointing (things improved with the 2012 facelift), but the dash design is smart and the seats are comfortable, although rear seat space is tight. The five-door Ibiza’s boot can accommodate 292 litres; the SC cuts this to 284, or 847 litres with the rear seats folded.

Image 7 of 10

Running costs

All Ibizas have to be serviced every 10,000 miles or 12 months, with the services alternating between minor (at £159) and major (£269), although the first and second services are priced at £179 and £239 respectively.

The costs are identical for petrol and diesel cars, and they apply to any Ibiza Mk4, regardless of age. The brake fluid has to be replaced after three years then every two (£49), while all engines have a cambelt that needs to be renewed every four years or 80,000 miles. Expect to pay £329 to replace the belt on a petrol model, or £399 on a diesel. Add another £130 for a fresh water pump. Book online, and you get free roadside assistance for a year.

Recalls

There have been two recalls for the Ibiza Mk4. The first was issued in June 2012 affecting cars built between April 2010 and November 2011. There was a problem with the latch mechanism, which could prevent the bonnet from closing properly and lead to it flying open.

The most recent recall was in December 2014 for 1.2-litre diesel Ibizas made from May 2010 to October 2014. These could suffer from the fuel filter cracking and leaks. There was no danger of the vehicle catching fire, though.

Driver Power owner satisfaction

The Ibiza’s age seems to have caught up with it, as it finished 169th in our Driver Power 2015 satisfaction survey. The only top 100 score was 99th for running costs, with handling 114th and ease of driving 118th. The lowest results were for seat comfort (192nd), ride quality (181st) and in-car tech (177th).

Image 10 of 10

Verdict

The Ibiza is starting to show its age, as there are newer, more talented superminis now on the used market. But that doesn’t stop SEAT’s supermini from being a great used buy, as you get a lot of car for your money.

It helps that there’s a wide range of models to choose from – from practical estates and fun sports editions such as the FR and Cupra to the frugal Ecomotive car.

It’s not the most spacious or dynamic car in the hatchback class, but as an all-rounder, the Ibiza should be on the shortlist of anybody looking for a small car that’s fun to drive and cheap to run.

Following the hugely positive response to the Ford GTsupercar at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show, Ford aimed to instil some supercar thrills in the latest Focus RS with a flared nose and wheelarches as well as the essential aggressive stance.

The latest model to wear the fabled RS badgefollows a long line of affordable but seriously high-performance Fords – a dynasty that started back in 1968 with the 15M RS and brought us legends like the Escort RS1600, Sierra RS Cosworth, Escort RS Cosworth and two Focus RS models before this.

The new all-wheel-drive Focus RS comes with a drift mode function that means 70 per cent of power can be sent to the rear end with all of that power able to be sent to a single wheel if required.

Bowing to pressure from key rivals like the Audi RS3and Mercedes A 45 AMG, Ford’s Performance division has fitted a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system to give optimum traction. The new Focus RS hot hatchback was designed with four-wheel drive in mind from the start to elevate the car to new levels of performance and driver involvement.

Image 2 of 35

Speaking to Auto Express at the unveiling of the new car, vice president global vehicle development, Raj Nair, told us that the Focus’s clever all-wheel-drive system debuts a host of innovations for the brand and was needed to cope with the high power level of the car’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine.

“Cost didn’t come into it,” said Nair. “It wasn’t a case of engineers vs accountants, but that we wanted to make an affordable performance vehicle with the best technology possible – it needs to be a percentage above an ST. That’s what an RS should be about.”

Image 20 of 35

The first major innovation is the hottest Focus’s new electronically controlled twin-clutch four-wheel drive system. An aptly named 'drift' function allows up to 70 per cent of power to be sent to the rear wheels, with as much as 100 per cent of that driving torque sent to one individual wheel.

“This way you get great steering response but incredible pull out of the corner – and we can use the torque vectoring to keep the car safe and stable all the way through a bend.”

The second major innovation on the new RS Focus is the low weight of the new four-wheel drive transmission. It’s thought the system only adds around 20kg to the car – a similar weight penalty to that which the clever RevoKnuckle front suspension setup added on the last generation RS. However, with Ford’s latest Dynamic Torque Vectoring system, RevoKnuckle is now redundant.

Ford Focus RS: 2.3 Ecoboost turbo engine

Under the standard Focus bonnet lies a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, which will be shared with this year’s Mustang. But, unlike the US muscle car, the hatch gets a twin-scroll turbo with a larger compressor for better airflow, as well as a larger intercooler. And we’re assured those sawn-off twin exhausts will emit deep-throated gargles, pops and crackles.

Image 4 of 35

Power is 345bhp – that’s 17bhp less than the 2.5-litre five-cylinder delivers in the RS3 but there could be the potential to up power even further in future with a limited-run model. The 2.3-litre EcoBoost ‘red lines’ at 6,800rpm, CO2 emissions are down 20 per cent on the old RS’s Volvo-derived 2.5 five-cylinder and a six-speed manual box is standard.

As with most four-wheel drive cars, there will be an efficiency penalty. “We’re not ready to talk fuel economy numbers just yet,” vehicle development boss Raj Nair explained, adding that, “economy and emissions will be significantly better than we’ve seen in previous RS products.” This means the new car could achieve as much as 35mpg.

Focusing on “functional aerodynamics” has helped Ford improve efficiency by reducing drag and adding downforce to improve grip and handling.

The car’s muscular bodykit – including a redesigned front bumper, grille and large rear spoiler – has been developed with this in mind and to aid cooling of the retuned engine.

New Ford Focus RS: colours and equipment

UK dealers shifted nearly 4,600 examples of the previous RS between 2009 and 2011, and Ford has similarly high hopes with this Mk3. Prices dip under the £30k barrier for the standard car, which will come with 19-inch alloys, Brembo brakes, Recaro sports seats and a range of sporty design touches; sat-nav and Recaro bucket seats will be optional, as will semi-slick track tyres.

Image 10 of 35

Ford has confirmed that the Liquid Blue colour on the car in our pictures is only for the show model, but it’s promising a new Nitrous Blue paint will be similar. Stealth Grey, Absolute Black and Frozen White will also appear, but the last RS’s Ultimate Green finish has been dropped.

2015 Focus RS: on sale globally

On the outside, it’s clear to see the RS is a serious piece of kit. The flared nose and rear spoiler hint at supercar-beating performance, but it’s a more restrained look overall than its predecessor. And for that you have One Ford to blame – or thank, depending on your viewpoint.

Image 28 of 35

This Focus RS will be the first to be available all around the world, rather than sold only in certain markets. Not surprisingly, the image of previous models – with their big wings, large wheels and gaping air scoops – doesn’t translate that well internationally. But with a five-door body from the humdrum Focus, the new RS is more reserved than the previous model from six years ago.

Ford Focus RS: aggresive design

“We were told by the marketing department that we had to tone down the styling,” explained Ernesto Rupar, Ford of Europe’s supervisor for exterior design. “It was felt the old RS’s look would be over the top for this new car. Everything you see on the new RS has been added for a purpose; there’s nothing unnecessary.

“We went through around five designs to get to this – one of the designs had air vents on the bonnet, but they had no real purpose so they went.”

The Focus’ five-door layout has also prevented the use of a rally car-like wide body – a look that was so distinctive on the Focus RS Mk2. “We would have to have changed the door pressings to give it a wide body look, and that just wasn’t on the agenda,” said Rupar. “So, with no wide body, we had to concentrate on making the front and rear as sporty-looking as possible.

Image 19 of 35

“We were looking at the RS3 and its classy style. We didn’t want to make this car look like a boy racer’s car.” The front bumper is bespoke and has massive air vents at the corners that lead up to the gaping, flared grille. In the lower grille opening, even the intercooler is visible – a clear motorsport design cue.

Along the side, the RS details are few and far between – it’s a near Focus STcopy. The Mk2’s distinctive side vents with integrated RS badging have gone, too – the blue RS letters have moved to the rear spoiler’s end plates. “We wanted to get the RS badge somewhere on the side, and I suggested the rear spoiler,” said a beaming Rupar. “My dream car as a kid was the Ferrari F40 and that car had ‘F40’ on the wing, so I wanted it on the RS, too!”

Image 24 of 35

The spoiler is just one part of the rear end’s substantial makeover, however. The bumper – with its incorporated air diffuser, reversing light and two angled exhausts – is almost a carbon copy of the set-up on the old RS.

Full specifications will be revealed when the car makes its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. But for now, it’s clear to see the RS is back – and back with an almighty bang.

Our exclusive image of the 2017 Ford Fiesta shows new look, with interior quality and tech to be improved

Our exclusive image of the 2017 Ford Fiesta shows new look, with interior quality and tech to be improved

A plusher, more upmarket Ford Fiesta is at the heart of radical plans to shake up the bottom half of the brand’s line-up over the next two years, and our exclusive main image shows how it’s set to look.

Due on sale in the first half of 2017, the next Fiesta will be nudged up in price, quality, refinement and features to reflect more expensive tastes among superminicustomers – and to allow room for a cheaper stablemate, the forthcoming Ka+, which will sit just below it in the range.

The Fiesta stays on Ford’s Global B platform for what will be its seventh generation, so while spy shots have shown a car sporting a wider track, engineers are likely to have only millimetres to play with when it comes to extending dimensions. The styling will incorporate the latest evolution of the family grille, a slightly squarer nose and slim headlamps.

Image 5 of 8

Staying on the same chassis means that Ford can save considerable sums of money on research and development – and at least some of that cash will be pumped into improving two areas where the Fiesta now lags behind the competition: interior quality and big-car features.

Inside, soft-touch materials will replace the current rubberised finish on the facia, and there will be a major overhaul of the car’s infotainment system. Expect the existing tiny display to be replaced by a larger touchscreen, featuring the company’s latest SYNC 3software for music, smartphone integration and satellite navigation. New safety equipment is likely to include lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, along with traffic sign recognition.

The mechanical make-up will focus on the next generation of Ford’s EcoBoost engines; indeed, this could be the point where the Fiesta drops its old four-cylinder 81bhp motor and switches exclusively to turbocharged three-cylinder power. This would distinguish it from the cheaper Ka+.

Image 7 of 8

Nudging the Fiesta upmarket marks a key shift in Ford’s small-car line-up, as the more basic editions of the Fiesta – Studio and Style trims – are likely to be dropped, moving the entry point for the range to around £13,000. This, in turn, will allow the forthcoming Ka+ to be pitched as a competitor for models that currently undercut the Fiesta or beat it on specification – the Dacia Sanderoand Vauxhall Corsa, for example.

Ford has been wrestling with the name of its new small model, which marks a move away from the traditional city car class. But marketing officials believe there’s enough equity in the Kaname for it to continue, albeit with the ‘+’ suffix designed to reflect its larger dimensions. The Ka+ will also share the Global B platform with the new Fiesta, but will be more basic inside, built in India instead of Germany and considerably cheaper – entry-level editions of the car are likely to cost around £8,000.

Meanwhile, Ford bosses have not ruled out an even more luxurious range-topper for the Fiesta that could carry Vignale badging. “Never say never on this,” said European sales and marketing chief Roelant de Waard when asked if the firm would consider a Vignale smaller than the Mondeo. “We sell expensive Fiestas and EcoSports; it may be true over time that the same thing happens and we realise there is more that we can offer. Size is not equal to luxury any more.”

The Countryman has been somewhat of an unlikely success for MINI - but there's no escaping the fact that despite only being five years old, it's due an update soon to bring it in line with the rest of the updated MINI range.

- but there's no escaping the fact that despite only being five years old, it's due an update soon to bring it in line with the rest of the updated MINI range. Still, that hasn't stopped the BMW-owned brand from introducing another limited-production edition to convince punters it's an appealing buy - and this is it, the Countryman Special Edition.

The Special Edition is along the same line as the MINI Countryman Park Laneand Countryman Business Edition- adding styling tweaks and extra kit to woo potential buyers. Unfortunately though, the Special Edition doesn't seem to add much in the way of desirable goodies. Instead of a wacky, stand-out paint job, customers are treated to black paint, with a Metallic 'Space Grey' roof and mirror caps. Black alloys also feature.

Inside, the seats are covered with Gravity-Carbon black leather, and the dash has piano black interior trim. If you're sensing a theme here, you'd be right.

There's some welcome colour on the equipment list, even if it is only 'Blue'tooth phone connectivity - but the generous kit list also includes sat-nav, voice control, heated front seats, climate control and xenon headlights. However, MINI haven't released a price for the Countryman Special Edition - so it's impossible to tell whether this is good value or not when compared to the standard car.

Obviously, customers opting for a special edition MINI wouldn't make do with one of the meagre, lower-powered engines, so the Countryman Special Edition is available in either Cooper S or Cooper SD form - that's either a 1.6-litre petrol engine with 188bhp, or a 2.0-litre diesel with 143bhp. Both models have ALL4 four-wheel-drive for the occasional foray down a farm track, and a choice of automatic or manual gearboxes.

Only 250 examples of the MINI Countryman Special Edition will be released, and it's available to order now.

Could the Countryman Special Edition tempt you into MINI ownership? Let us know in the comments...

Our images show a new look for the bigger, roomier MINI Countryman crossover; due late this year

Our images show a new look for the bigger, roomier MINI Countryman crossover; due late this year

MINI's range revolution is nearly complete, although there’s one car that’s getting a bit long in the tooth.

range revolution is nearly complete, although there’s one car that’s getting a bit long in the tooth. The Countryman, first launched in 2010, is now the oldest model in the brand’s line-up. Prototypes of the all-new second-generation crossover are undergoing final testing, and our exclusive images show you how the finished product could look when it’s released towards the end of the year.

Don’t expect the Countryman’s styling to change dramatically. The car is still a strong seller and the class is booming, so a radical new design approach isn’t necessary. Spy shots indicate that the front end will remain square-edged, yet it’ll have a more muscular look than other MINIs. The side profile will be very similar to the outgoing model’s, save for a more sloping roofline and chunkier haunches. Rugged wheelarches and lower body cladding will give the newcomer the necessary crossover appeal, too.

One of the biggest and most obvious changes to the Countryman will be the increase in size – a result of switching  to the new UKL1 modular platform used for the MINI hatchand Clubman. The car is expected to approach 4.2 metres in length thanks to a longer wheelbase, which means more interior space, especially in the rear. MINI is now able to have greater differentiation between its models after trimming its line-up from seven cars to five.

The new Countryman will get the same three and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as the Clubman and hatch. The entry-level Cooper will feature the three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo, with the more powerful four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo offered on Cooper S and range-topping John Cooper Works models, delivering as much as 228bhp.

MINI also has the option of using the plug-in hybrid tech available from parent company BMW, as seen in the 2 Series Active Tourer PHEVand upcoming X1 plug- in, which also sit on the UKL1 platform.

What do you think of the Countryman's new look? Let us know in the comments below...

Vespa is on a role in India and has launched yet another showroom. Piaggio sells the Vespa range in India with 125cc and 150cc engines. The scooters have been selling very strongly in spite of them being considerably more expensive than its direct rivals. Vespas in general have that classic retro appeal that has been winning hearts all over the country. The company’s Vespa range consists of scooters like the original Vespa, Elegante, VXL 125, SXL 125, VXL 150 and the SXL 150.

New-Vespa-SXL-150-Front

Vespa SXL 150

The Vespa, Elegante, VXL 125 and SXL 125 are powered by a 125cc single cylinder motor that develops 10.06PS of max power at 7500 RPM and a max torque of 10.6Nm at 6000 RPM. The VXL 150 and SXL 150 on the other hand feature a 150cc single engine that develops a bit more power at 11.6PS at 7000 RPM and a max torque of 11.5Nm at 5500 RPM. Both engines features 3 Valve layout, Aluminium Cylinder Head, Overhead Cam and Roller Rocker Arm, MAP Sensing and Variable Spark Timing Management system. The entire Vespa range comes with only a CVT automatic transmission and wide 120-section rear tyres.

Vespa Elegante 125

Vespa also offers a wide range of accessories for its scooters like a range of custom coloured Classic and Curve helmets, Perimeter Kit, Front Chrome Bumper Guard and a Visor. The company has sold over 18 million units to date. Vespa is known for its unique styling which has evolved over the years. It has been 70 years since the launch of the brand and the company still has a niche in the scooter segment which is penetrating slowly into the younger generation buyers. We hope Piaggio brings the premium range of Vespa scooters to India, and given the demand it has for the brand we think that day is not too far.

TVS Scooty Zest

The India two-wheeler APEAL Study, which serves as the industry benchmark for new two-wheeler appeal, measures how gratifying a new two-wheeler is to own and ride based on owner evaluations during the first two to six months of ownership. The study examines 33 attributes across six performance categories (in alphabetical order) namely control switches/locks; engine and transmission performance; fuel economy; looks and styling; ride and handling; and seats. Overall APEAL performance is reported as an index score based on a 1,000-point scale, with a higher score indicating higher satisfaction.

The 2016 APEAL study is based upon feedback received from 9,283 vehicle owners across 10 makes and a total of 87 models. The study found out that 62 percent of two-wheeler owners indicate a desire for more than 10 features and 73 percent say they expect to keep their new vehicle for five years or more. Also among highly satisfied owners, 75 percent say they definitely would recommend their two-wheeler to a friend or relative, compared with 34 percent of highly dissatisfied owners.

In the scooter segment, TVS Zest 110 (875) ranks highest among executive models. In the motorcycle segment, TVS Star City Plus (863) ranks highest among economy models, and Honda CB Shine (850) ranks highest among executive models. Honda CB Unicorn and debutant Suzuki Gixxer (865 each) rank highest in a tie among upper executive models and debutant Honda CB Unicorn 160 (872) ranks highest among premium models. Mohit Arora, Executive Director at J.D. Power, Singapore, said, “Two-wheeler manufacturers are providing a multitude of features to differentiate their product offerings. However, the quality of execution of these features is pivotal to customer satisfaction. It is prudent for OEMs to ensure that these new features are of optimum quality and their functionality is communicated effectively to the customer during new-vehicle delivery.”

TVS Jupiter to get Disc Brakes and Fuel Injection – Spied

TVS Jupiter to get Disc Brakes and Fuel Injection – Spied

The TVS Jupiter was spied with front disc brake and did not have a choke lever which points out to fuel injection technology incorporated into the engine.

2016 TVS Jupiter Fuel Injection Spied

TVS Jupiter has been the bestselling scooter for the company and the second best selling scooter in India after the Honda Activa range. The scooter comes loaded with features, is a breeze to ride and is priced competitively. While we are used to motorcycles getting the fuel injection technology, this would be the first time a scooter will benefit in India. The scooter spied was completely undisguised but had a few noticeable differences like a front disc brake and absence of a choke lever. Also, sources report that the scooter was fitted with oxygen sensors which further confirms that TVS might be bringing a fuel injected Jupiter to the Indian market. Some might think this step was not needed from TVS, but it goes a long way in reducing emissions and also improving fuel efficiency.

The 110cc single cylinder motor will also be the smallest fuel injected motor on sale in India. Currently, it is powered by a 109.7cc single cylinder motor that develops 8.2PS of max power at 7500RPM and 8Nm of torque at 5500RPM. The engine is coupled to a CVT automatic transmission and boasts of a mileage of 62Km/L. It comes loaded with features like a mobile charging port, external fuel filler, a unique pass switch, key shutter lock and combined braking to name a few.

The TVS Jupiter is the highest awarded scooter ever in the Indian market. The scooter holds a record of selling more than 5 lakh units in a period of just 18 months from launch which definitely says something about its popularity. We also reckon that the TVS Jupiter EFI will be launched very soon, in the next couple of months. If so, this scooter will be worth waiting for and could be a revolution in the Indian scooter segment.

Top Five Scooters for Sale in India in 2015

Top Five Scooters for Sale in India in 2015

The scooter segment in India is a fast growing one with over 16 million units sold in the current year.

It’s set to grow even larger and all manufacturers want a piece of this pie. Honda dominated the Indian scooter segment with its Activa but that was way back followed by Hero . Now many manufacturers like Suzuki, Yamaha, Mahindra and TVS have joined the gear-less scooter bandwagon with competitive products that give the Honda Activa a run for its money.

Here is a list of scooters that are currently dominating the gear-less two wheeler market:

1) Honda Activa 3G

The Honda Activa has been with us for over 15 years, receiving only three face lifts through the years. The ordinary styling and extraordinary reliability has made Honda Activa the choice of millions. Styling isn’t revolutionary in the new Honda Activa 3G with main changes at the side with 3D emblem Activa badge and at the rear with new rear lights.

Powered by the same air cooled 110 cc single cylinder engine, the Activa 3G offers smooth performance with figures of 8 bhp and 8.83 Nm of torque. Some chinks in the Activa 3G’s armour are the analogue instrument cluster and lack of telescopic forks at the front. If you are looking for a reliable scooter with good fit and finish and also mileage, look no further than the Honda Activa 3G, priced at Rs 49,517 ex showroom Delhi.

2) Yamaha Fascino

The Fascino is Yamaha’s alternative for a stylish scooter with flowing cues and a retro design with bits of chrome too. Fit and finish is also premium compared to other Yamaha models and has a well designed rear tyre guard to prevent splashing. Yamaha’s Fascino is also longer with grippy MRF Zapper rubber, which makes it a bit more stable at speeds, plus having a kerb weight of 103 kg makes it pretty agile and happy to corner.

At the heart is the same 110 cc air cooled unit with a power and torque figures of 7 and 8.1 , giving the Fascino a strong mid range and onto a top speed of 90 kph. With BlueCore technology, Fascino is the most fuel efficient at 66 kpl (company claimed figures). So if you want a more reliable less expensive option to the Vespa, you can have the Yamaha Fascino at RS 53,000 (Ex Showroom Delhi).

3) Hero Maestro Edge

The main feature about the Hero Maestro Edge is the all new 110 cc power plant developed with assistance from AVL Engineering, which have been in the engine business for 67 years. The air-cooled single cylinder motor has a max output of 8.3 bhp at 8,000 rpm and a handy torque of 8.3 Nm from 6,500 rpm, which adds up to a top speed of respectable top speed of 85 km/hr.

Hero claims the Edge to have a mileage of 65.8 kilometres to the litre with an external fuel filler, which beats the figures of arch rival Activa. With a fibre body, the scooter is light at 110 kilograms making it easy and nimble in city traffic to exploit the gaps. Maestro Edge is also loaded with a chipped ignition key that can be used as a steering lock, remote seat release, remote fuel lid release and ignition.

Other features include an under seat USB point for mobile charging and a semi digital instrument console. Priced at Rs 50,700 (ex showroom Delhi) for the top end VX version, the Hero Maestro Edge is an appealing package.

4) Mahindra Gusto

Mahindra is the newest entry into gear less scooter segment and they aim to stand out from the crowd by offering features never before seen on a scooter. One of the much talked about feature on the Gusto is the seat height adjustable facility that will be a boon for shorter riders. Another is the follow me head lamps which help in easy location of your ride and a more premium flip out key with torch similar to the one on the motorcycle Centuro.

Another nice point about the Gusto is the positioning of the kick lever at the front so the rider doesn’t have to disembark to start the scooter. An in-house developed single cylinder 110c c M-TEC motor putting out 7.9 bhp and a handy 8.5 Nm of torque. Wide 12 inch wheels give good stability and class leading ground clearance too at 165mm .

If you want a well thought out scooter then the Mahindra Gusto is yours at Rs 49,350 for the VX Special Edition (Ex Showroom Delhi).

5) Suzuki Let’s

Another 110 cc scooter in the crowded segment, Suzuki’s Let’s has looks to its side with sharp styling appealing to both sexes in the right shade. Ergonomics are also its strong suit with a sculpted floor board that doesn’t intrude into the rider’s legs and a well positioned large bag hook near the ignition slot.

Suzuki’s new 112.8 cc engine debuts in India on the Let’s and it makes 8.5 bhp and 9 Nm of torque while giving a mileage of 63 kilometres per litre. There is no disc brake option on the Let’s and that’s a let down with drums never offering the same confident stopping power. Priced at Rs 50,600 (Ex Showroom Delhi), the Let’s is the one for you, if you want a decent looking and performing ride.

CEAT believes that the tubeless tyre market is poised for a rapid growth given the safety and convenience they offer to the customer.

The scooter segment in India is seeing a positive growth in recent years. Scooters are mostly used by people (mostly women) who travel short distances to work on a daily basis. Scooters provide the ease of an automatic transmission and even easier maneuverability in congested city traffic conditions. The Honda Activa, for example, sold more than two lakh unitsin the month of September alone which is definitely saying something for the scooter segment. The TVS Jupiter sold more than 50,000 units last month, while Hero MotoCorp came up with two brand new scooter models for the Indian market, namely the Maestro Edgeand the Duet.

CEAT Ltd. is one of the leading tyre manufacturers in Indiaand was established in the year 1958. It has a capacity of more than 700 tons per day and manufactures world-class radials for Trucks, Buses, LCVs, Earthmovers, Forklifts, Tractors, Trailers, Cars, Motorcycles, Scooters and Auto-rickshaws too. Hero Maestro Edge vs Honda Activa vs TVS Jupiter – Specs Comparo

Hero Maestro Edge vs Honda Activa vs TVS Jupiter – Specs Comparo

Hero MotoCorp yesterday launched two new scooters in India namely the Maestro Edge and Duet.

namely the Maestro Edge and Duet. While the prices for the Maestro Edge were revealed (starting at Rs. 49,500/- Ex-showroom, Delhi), it was announced that the Duet would be launched at a later stage after deliveries for the Maestro Edge began somewhere mid-October. The Maestro Edge has entered into a very fierce segment which comprise of rivals like the Honda Activaand the TVS Jupiter. While the Honda Activa has set the sales charts on fire in the recent past, the TVS Jupiterhas been quite a strong seller for the company. We take a look at how the new Hero Maestro Edge compares with its two biggest rivals through a detailed specs comparison.

Hero Maestro Edge Headlight The Hero Maestro Edge looks fresh and sporty at the same time

Design:

The Hero Maestro Edge definitely has the ‘edge’ over its rivals as the design feels fresh and sporty at the same time. It gets nice touches like LED taillights, 12-inch alloys and a neat looking digital instrument cluster. The TVS Jupiter on the other hand gets an all black theme to the exteriors with the alloys and engine housing painted in black. The Honda Activa is offered in three variants namely the Activa-i, Activa 3G and Activa 125. Sadly, all the three variants are somewhat overshadowed here by the Maestro Edge and Jupiter as it tends to feel a bit dated. Also, every second scooter buyer in India opts for the Activa which makes it a very common sight on our roads and turns the arrow in favour of the other two bikes here.

TVS Jupiter 110cc scooter

The Jupiter gets an all black theme on the exterior with the alloys and engine housing painted in black

Engine:

All scooters here come with 110cc motors with the new Hero Maestro Edge which develops the most power at 8.3PS while the Activa-i and Activa 3G produce most torque at 8.83Nm. The TVS’s 110cc motor churns out 8.2PS of power and 8Nm of torque which is somewhere middle of the road. All come mated to only an automatic gearbox which makes them easy to ride in the city. While the Activa-i and the Activa 3G get 110cc engines developing 8PS of max power, the Activa 125 can be had with a 125cc motor with a slightly higher power output.

Honda Activa sales

The Honda Activa looks the most dated of the lot and misses out on many convenience features its rivals offer

Features:

Hero Maestro Edge seems to offer the most features here with convenience features like a USB 3.0 charging point under the seat, an external fuel tank opener, 12-inch alloys, remote fuel lid and seat opening, digital instrument cluster and the list goes on. The TVS Jupiter is also quite close to the Maestro Edge where features are concerned and gets an LED taillight, mobile charger under the seat and retractable bag hooks. The Honda Activa again feels out of place here as it can boast of a very few of the above mentioned features and gets a analog instrument cluster which looks completely outdated.

Hero Maestro Edge Instrument Cluster

The Hero Maestro offers the most bang for your buck and has enough in its arsenal to dethrone rivals

Verdict:

The Honda Activais the oldest of the lot and it shows. It gets the least amount of features and misses out on quite a lot of frills which have become kind of a norm on scooters these days. The TVS Jupiter is quite the opposite with loads of features to which one can relate to from this segment. But the ace of the pack has to be the new Hero Maestro Edge which offers even more features at a considerably lower price than both the Activa and the Jupiter. Although hold on to that thought, we will confirm this through a thorough road test review coming up very soon. Stay tuned to Indian Cars Bikes.

Renault 5 GT Turbo: Pic Of The Week
There's a full PH Hero story coming, so here's your desktop preview!

The countryside in spring is a tranquil and benign setting; what could disturb such a peaceful environment? Namely, a legendary French hot hatch classic tearing down the quiet roads. What could be more entertaining than chucking this cheeky little Renault around country lanes?

Plastered across the Renault's boot is the 'turbo' font, a word back in the 80s that simply meant bigger and better. Seeing the 5 GT turbo lift-off oversteer at a hairpin, followed by the whoosh of the turbo is a sight and sound to behold that is now so rare. A standard 5 GT Turbo this nice is an awfully rare sight nowadays, as of course so many were bodykitted beyond the realms of good taste. And then crashed.

So dig out your rose-tinted spectacles for a wallpaper to remind yourself of the hot hatch glory days. Is it as good as you remember? Hero story coming soon!
