Ford F-150 only full-size pickup to earn Top Safety Pick award

Ford's 2016 F-150is the only full-size pickup to earn a Top Safety Pick rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest round of crash tests.

In a group of seven trucks evaluated for the 2016 model year, the F-150 represents the only model to achieve a 'good' rating in the challenging small-overlap test. The institute tested the crew cab and extended cab variants.

all received 'acceptable' ratings in the small-overlap scenario. The IIHS previously allowed such scores to qualify for Top Safety Pick status, however the criteria were tightened for 2016.

Ford introduced its aluminum-clad F-150 for the 2015 model year. The redesigned pickup did not initially score well in the small-overlap test, receiving a 'marginal' rating with significant intrusion near the brake pedal, upper hinge pillar, steering column and instrument panel.

Engineers went back to the drawing table and revised the F-150's front structure for the 2016 model year.

"We commend Ford for taking last year's test results to heart and upgrading protection for SuperCab occupants in small overlap crashes," said IIHS research center VP Raul Arbelaez.

Rivals that earned a 'marginal' or 'poor' small-overlap rating include the crew-cab Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, the Toyota Tundra CrewMax, and the Ram 1500in both quad- and crew-cab forms.
