The New Alfa Romeo SUV Will Be Called Stelvio

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles boss Sergio Marchionne has confirmed that the new much awaited and delayed Alfa Romeo SUV will be called the Stelvio.

The Stelvio was earlier teased showing parts of its dashboard, which looks similar to the Giulia sedan

The SUV was code-named the Tipo 949 D-SUV. Stelvio name is in homage of the famous mountain pass in Italy. Stelvio is also the name of a popular Italian cheese, an Italian National Park and a composer. It is unknown what the new SUV is named after.

Sergio also confirmed that the Giulia sedan will start production from the 14th of next month. It was delayed due to safety concerns. The SUV will be based on the Giulia and will share my parts like the dashboard and powertrain with the sedan.

The SUV is expected to get the same powertrain as the sedan. It will get a diesel engine in different states of tune (150 bhp, 180 bhp and 210 bhp) and a new GME (Global Medium Engine) 2.0-litre petrol engine in different states of tune (200 bhp, 250 bhp and 280 bhp). Just like the sedan, a much more powerful version of the SUV is expected. That will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine producing 500 bhp. This is the same engine that powers the hot performance version.

The SUV will be based on the Giulia sedan and will be launched by the end of the year

It will compete against the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Volvo XC60. It will be launched later on the year. Production will begin by the end of the year and will go on sale in 2017.

Later, Alfa Romeo plans to launch a larger SUV that could compete with cars like BMW X5. The main markets for Alfa Romeo’s new SUV will be the USA and China.
