Volkswagen India has unveiled the Ameo subcompact sedan in India. The car has been made in India as well as made for India and will take on cars like the Maruti DZire, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest.
Volkswagen Ameo is a sub 4-metre sedan and is based on the Polo hatchback just like the Vento. The front looks very similar to the Polo till the rear door after which the stubby boot takes shape. The rear looks well adhered to the rest of the car but wont win any prizes at a beauty contest due to the sub 4-metre restrictions. The bootlid gets very Skoda like slanting lines on either sides of the number plates while slim reflectors on the base of the bumper sum up the rear design. The headlamps use double barrel treatment with smoked out black finish. The foglights are also provided with the cornering light function which lights up the side of the car in the direction in which it is being steered.
The car is powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol that develops 75BHP and a 1.5-litre TDi diesel engine. A 5-speed gearbox drives the front wheels and for the first time will come mated to a 7-speed dual clutch DSG gearbox to the diesel engine. On the insides the car gets many firsts that include a Mirrorlink supported touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, LED turn indicators, Auto dimming IRVM, rain sensing wipers, rear view camera and many more. The Ameo will also adorn new 16-inch alloy wheels with super wide low profile 215-section tyres wrapped around it.
On the safety front the car will be offered with dual airbags and ABS as standard, while the DSG also comes equipped with a Hill Hold function. Volkswagen India will be launching the car in the second quarter on 2016. The Volkswagen Ameo is expected to be priced at Rs. 5.99 lakhs for the base petrol which will go up to Rs. 10 lakhs for the range topping diesel equipped with the DSG gearbox.
