Ferrari’s all new 488 Spider is powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.9 l V8 that also powers its fixed top counterpart. The engine remains unchanged and as such produces 661 hp @ 8000 RPM and 760 Nm of torque at 3000 RPM. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven speed dual clutch transmission. Drivers can drop the hard-top in a quick 14 seconds to fully experience the impassioned bellow of Ferrari’s first ever turbo V8. Ferrari stated that the hard-top was a full 25 kg lighter than the soft-top minimizing the increase in weight commonly associated with convertible models. The rear windscreen can be adjusted independently of the roof and can be set to three different positions depending on driver preferences.

Ferrari has ensured that the new 488 Spider’s torsional rigidity and beam stiffness are identical to its fixed-top twin allowing the convertible to corner just as sharply. The Italian car maker has also installed numerous bits of aero to minimize drag and increase downforce. Ferrari claims that the all new 488 GTB is the most aerodynamically efficient drop-top the manufacturer has ever built. Currently, the Ferrari 488 Spider’s only direct rival is the McLaren 650S Spider. However, the 488 Spider will also have to contend with the inevitable launches of the next gen Audi R8 Spider and the Lamborghini Huracan Roadster.
The 2016 Ferrari 488 Spider houses the same turbocharged V8 motor that powers its fixed top counterpart.
