Mahindra has launched a new downsized 1.99-litre mHawk diesel engine for the new generation Scorpio and new age XUV500 in Delhi and National Capital Region.

Mahindra has launched a new downsized 1.99-litre mHawk diesel engine for the new generation Scorpio and new age XUV500 in Delhi and National Capital Region. This relieves the company from the ongoing diesel car ban in Delhi and allows it to commence with sales of the aforementioned SUVs there.

2014 Mahindra Scorpio facelift profile

2014 Mahindra Scorpio facelift profile

The Delhi Government had recently announced that diesel passenger vehicles with capacities more than 2.0-litres will be banned. This was due to the rising air pollution conditions in the city which made it the most polluted city in the world. This move affected manufacturers like Mahindra and Toyota which have a major presence in these areas. In order to negate this situation there were rumours that Mahindra is developing an all new engine that will comply with the new norms. The SUV manufacturer has finally launched an all new 1.99-litre engine that will power both the Sorpio and XUV500.

The new engine from Mahindra belongs to the same mHawk engine family and will produce 120BHP and 140BHP in the Scorpio and XUV500 respectively. This means that the new downsized engine has not come at the cost of reduced power output which is excellent news. Speaking on this occasion, Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive (Automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra said, “This new engine, the development of which started in August 2014, is now ready for launch on both the New Generation Scorpio and the New Age XUV500. We do hope that our customers would enjoy driving these vehicles which deliver the performance of our currently on offer 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engines.”

The new diesel engine lineup will be initially offered only in Delhi and NCR followed by other cities in the country. The new variants will be displayed at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo. Stay tuned to the ICB network for more launch related news of the two Mahindra SUVs.

Three must know things about Innova Crysta

Three must know things about Innova Crysta

Innova Crysta is a big launch for the Japanese maker after a period of lull with no so successful launches in the country.

Innova Crysta is a big launch for the Japanese maker after a period of lull with no so successful launches in the country. Innova Crysta is expected to be launched in the next couple of months. Here are five things about the Innova Crysta you should know.

Almost 50 percent powerful engine

Toyota Innova will receive a significant bump in engine power. The base 2.5-litre mill produced a measly 100 bhp but the folks have increased up the power output from a slightly smaller engine. The new Crysta will feature a 2.4-litre mill producing 147bhp and 359 Nm of torque which is great news. However, clever engineering has helped achieve greater fuel efficiency which is expected to be 10-15% more than the outgoing version.

Heavier and larger than current generation

Toyota Crysta is a good 200 kg heavier than the current model and also larger dimensionally. It measures 4735 mm in length, 1830 mm in width and 1795 mm in height which is an increase of 210 mm, 70 mm and 65 mm respectively. The increase in dimensions will certainly increase the space and comfort on the inside but it might be difficult to maneuver especially with the wheelbase remaining a constant 2750 mm.

More Expensive

The Inova Crysta will come with loads of upmarket features, luxuries. The car is completely new with no parts adopted from the old model. However on the upside, since the parts will be shared with Fortuner and Hilux, the jump in cost should not be much. We expect it to be about 10 percent.

The Innova Crysta bookings have already opened in India and what we know is Indians have loved the MPV and it will garner great response. The Crysta will be available powered by a 2.0-litre i-VVT petrol motor that churns out 137BHP and 183Nm and an all new 2.4-litre diesel engine that produces 147BHP and 359Nm which is also shared with the new Toyota Fortuner. A more powerful 2.8-litre diesel motor might also be on offer.

Delhi Auto Expo 2016 will see about 80 small and big launches.

Delhi Auto Expo 2016 will see about 80 small and big launches. Here we bring you five new cars which are expected to be launched at the Expo next week.

Toyota Innova

Innova is the biggest success story of Toyota here in India and the new generation is ready to make a splash across the country with the premiere to be held at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016. The new Toyota Innova is powered by a 2.0-litre i-VVT petrol motor that churns out 137BHP and 183Nm and an all new 2.4-litre diesel engine that produces 147BHP and 359Nm which is also shared with the new Toyota Fortuner. The engines will be offered with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox across all variants. On the safety front, ABS, EBD and 3 airbags, EBD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill Start Assist is standard across all variants.

Toyota Innova is expected to cost 12-14 lakh rupees.

Volkswagen Polo GTI

Volkswagen Polo GTI Front

The Polo GTI is all set to take the tag of being the most powerful hatchback in India from the Abarth Punto.  The Volkswagen Polo GTI comes with a larger, more powerful 1.8 litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine churning out 190bhp and develops 250 Nm of peak torque. The engine will come mated to both a manual transmission as well as DSG unit. With 230 kmph of top speed, the Polo GTI can do a 0-100 kmph sprint in just 6.7 seconds.

The Polo GTI is expected to cost about 16-18 lakh rupees as it will be imported as a CBU.

Ssangyong Tivoli

The Tivoli is a SUV with moderate dimensions which can stand against recent crop in the segment, like Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta, Suzuki’s upcoming offering and many more. We feel that Tivoli has a lot in resemblance with Hyundai Creta, as both car’s silhouette matches to a great extent and have many things matching on features and specification front as well. Looking at current product portfolio of Mahindra auto, we can’t find enough space for this new probable entrant if we go by the scale of pricing.

SsangYong Tivoli in India is expected get either the 1.6-litre petrol and the e-XDi 160 diesel engine that power both, the Korean and Europe-bound models. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission and a manual. The diesel unit will come mated to the automatic gearbox and puts out 113bhp and 300Nm, while the petrol motor’s performance is rated at 126bhp along with 160Nm of maximum torque.

It will cost from 8-14 lakh rupees.

Chevrolet Cruze

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Facelift

The next-generation Chevrolet Cruze will be launched in India at the Auto Expo. It is expected to carry same drivetrains as the current version. The 2016 Cruze facelift will be powered by the same 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that develops 166BHP of max power and a strong 360Nm of max torque. Gearbox options too will remain the same which means it will get a 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox.

The car will cost somewhere between 18-20 lakh rupees.

Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai Tucson will make a presence felt in Indian car market after 2010 as the new generation is scheduled for India launch. The Hyundai Tucson is powered by  a 2.0 litre CRDi diesel engine producing 182 bhp and 402 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and power is sent to all four wheels.  The SUV gets projector headlamps with LED positioning lamps, fog lamps, LED daytime running lights, panoroma sunroof, LED tail lights, rear wiper and washer and a skid plate. On the inside, you get a dual tone interior with steering mounted controls, cruise control, navigation system and an auto air conditioning system. The SUV also gets rear air vents, parking assist system (PAS) and seat warming and cooling air ventilation system.

Hyundai Tucson is expected to cost Rs 18 lakh.

Mahindra XUV Aero

Mahindra XUV Aero is a concept which will be showcased by the Indian carmaker. The Aero looks similar to the BMW X6 and will take a long time to see a production version but nevertheless, it looks a fabulous concept.

The Skoda Octavia has won quite a few awards in its category and was solely responsible for the revival of what some call a dying D-segment

. It competes with the Volkswagen Jetta, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla Altis and the Renault Fluence in the Indian market. It is based on the MQB platform from the VW Group that also underpins cars like the Audi A3 and the soon to be launched next generation Skoda Superb. This makes the latest Octavia lighter than the model it replaces, the Laura and aids vastly in the driving dynamics.

2013-Skoda-Octavia-front

2013-Skoda-Octavia-front

The first generation Octaviawas launched in India way back in 2001. The car saw a strong demand due to its frugal diesel engines and solid build quality. It created quite a fan base initially but then Skoda axed the Octavia badge for some time and in its place sold the Laura. The Laura though having the same virtues of the first generation Octavia couldn’t create the same crazy fan following for itself. Hence Skoda decided to get the Octavia badge back to India in its latest third generation avatar in 2013 and has not looked back since then.

Sales Of The Skoda Rapid Diesel With A Manual Transmission Temporarily Stopped

Following Volkswagen, Skoda has temporarily stopped selling the Rapid diesel with a manual transmission.

Following Volkswagen, Skoda has temporarily stopped selling the Rapid diesel with a manual transmission. Volkswagen recently stopped selling the Rapid’s sister car, the Volkswagen Vento and recalled a few models. The recalled models were diesel powered cars with a manual transmission and the cars have been recalled due to inconsistencies in carbon monoxide emissions.

Sales of only the diesel car with a manual transmission has been temporarily halted

The stop sale of the Skoda Rapid is a voluntary move and it has not been called for by the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). The car has not failed any COP test (Conformity of Production). There is no carbon dioxide issue with the car. The temporary stoppage in sales has been announced as a precautionary measure because the Skoda Rapid shares its platform and many mechanical components with Volkswagen Vento. Other variants of the sedan continue to be on sale.

The Skoda Rapid is available with a petrol engine and a diesel engine. The petrol is a 1.6-litre unit producing 104 bhp and 153 Nm of torque. The diesel is a 1.5-litre unit producing 104 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. Both the engine are available with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic gearbox or a 7-speed dual clutch DSG gearbox and power is sent to the front wheels. The petrol manual car returns 15 kms to a litre of fuel while the automatic car returns 14.3 kms. The diesel manual car returns 21.14 kms to a litre of fuel while the automatic car returns 21.66 kms.

The Skoda Rapid starts at INR 7.71 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 11.86 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). It competes with the  Volkswagen Vento, Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Fluidic Verna 4S, Ford Fiesta, Fiat Linea, Nissan Sunny and the Renault Scala.

Skoda Rapid Facelift to Launch by Diwali 2016

A report by Autocar India says that the Skoda Rapid will receive a facelift around the festive season this year by Diwali.

says that the Skoda Rapid will receive a facelift around the festive season this year by Diwali. The car was launched in 2011 and has since then been receiving updates in the form of limited edition models.

2015 Skoda Rapid 1.5 TDI DSG Review - front left three quarter

Skoda Rapid is all set to get a complete makeover this Diwali and boy aren’t we excited. The Rapid has been one of the most underrated cars in India and is overshadowed by its soul sister the Volkswagen Vento. The German car recently got a facelift with new LED taillights and a redesigned headlamps cluster. The Skoda Rapid is expected to get a complete change in looks and will be the first major update in 5 years of its existence. The facelift will be more in line with the European spec Rapid and will now get a new family look, more in line with the current Octavia sold in India.

The current Rapid is available with a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel. The petrol will be carried forward as it is but the diesel will receive a slight update. The engine will get a new locally manufactured turbocharger which is slightly bigger than the current unit which means a slight bump in power too. We also expect the Rapid to borrow the 1.2-litre TSI unit mated to the 7-speed DSG from the Vento just to make the line up more complete. Also expect new paint shades for the Rapid to distinguish itself from the older car.

The Skoda Rapid will be priced at a small hike over the current model but expect it to cost lower than its main rivals the Volkswagen Vento and Honda City. The Honda City has been the king of the C-segment sedans in India and is powered by fuel efficient and powerful 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines that develop 118PS and 100PS respectively.

Bajaj Pulsar AS150 Review – First Ride

Bajaj Pulsar AS150 Review – First Ride

The Bajaj Pulsar AS150 brings in the novelty of adventure touring appeal to the burgeoning segment of 150 cc sport motorcycles.

brings in the novelty of adventure touring appeal to the burgeoning segment of 150 cc sport motorcycles. While its primary rivals Suzuki Gixxer SFand Yamaha Fazer FI V2.0are mere variant extensions with additional bodywork, the newest 150 cc Pulsar is a brand new model in its own right. Bajaj has been ruling compact sports segment for over a decade now and the latest addition to the family aims to push the envelope further, trouncing the relatively recent Japanese players in the game. We spent a good part of a day with the AS150 to know what it’s composed of.

Bajaj Pulsar AS150 Review – A 17 PS Cat among pigeons?

Design

The Pulsar AS150 looks identical to the AS200, save for few minor details. The ‘Alpha Male’ design philosophy with a tall stance, prominent semi fairing with projector headlight and a sizeable windscreen, make for a bold road presence to say the least. Rest of the design is borrowed from its donor model – the Pulsar 200 NS.

The Alpha Male styling is shared with the AS200. Dimensions are also identical.

Majority of components are shared with the AS200, and the beholder really need to be extremely observant to spot the differences. For starters, the 150 variant has skinnier 110/80-17 MRF rear tyre compared to the bigger model’s 130/70-17 Eurogrip rubber. Also, the former makes do without a rear disc brake. The stickers on the tailpiece are the only straight forward give away of the identity.

The overall build quality is at par with its primary rivals, which is to say, very good. The handle bar grip is nice to hold and the switch gear operation has a good feel to it. The riding position is upright and comfortable but a high seat height could get a bit tricky for short riders.

Rear wheel makes do without a disc brake.

The Bajaj Pulsar AS150 has a visual appeal of a bigger motorcycle (same dimensions as AS200), matching the aspirational value of the fully faired Suzuki Gixxer SF.

Engine and Gearbox

What makes the Pulsar AS150 a truly new product is its 149.5 cc air-cooled 4-valve DTS-i motor. The engineers have done a commendable job of extracting 17 PS @ 9,500 rpm, making it the most powerful unit in the segment. The torque output of 13 Nm however is comparable to other 150 cc motorcycles.

The new 149.5 cc 4-valve DTS-i air-cooled engine pushes out an impressive 17 PS at 9,500 rpm.

The motor settles into a refined idling, with mild positive pulsation felt through the handlebar. The surplus of power is pretty apparent right from the word go, as the motor feels super responsive and eager to rev. It moves off the line quickly and has a sprightly mid-range. The motor revs up to the red line eagerly and vibration does creep in through foot pegs as the tacho needle moves past 8,000 rpm. But nothing very intrusive. The underbelly exhaust voices out a sporty note, starting from the mid-range.

The motor is mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

The energetic new motor has a good partner in the 5-speed gearbox which offers excellent drivability. The gear shifts are smooth and light for relaxed operation, a feature one would appreciate during those long journeys. During our brief test ride, we didn’t get an opportunity to test the real world fuel economy of the new motor.

Ride, Handling and Braking

The Bajaj Pulsar AS150 is the only motorcycle in its segment to employ a perimeter frame, which is borrowed from the 200 NS. The conventional suspension system comprises of front telescopic fork and rear monoshock with Nitrox canister. The suspension setup is softer than that of the 200 NS, making it a touring friendly set of wheels. Though it has visual characteristics of an adventure tourer, the motorcycle is intended to be a mile muncher rather than an off-roader.

The motorcycle changes directions easily but the suspension is tuned towards comfortable long distance cruising.

At 143 kg, the 150 variant is a good 10 kg lighter that its larger engined sibling and that shows in its readiness to change directions. The AS150 is very easy to manoeuvre in city environment and handling is light and predictable. The grippy set of MRF tyres is an added plus.

The bike employs 240 mm disc brake upfront and a 130 mm drum brake at the rear. Braking is progressive and adequate but the disc doesn’t have the famous aggressive bite the Pulsars are known for.

Features

The projector headlamp enhances value-for-money quotient.

Semi fairing, projector headlamps, split seats and clip-on handlebars are the noteworthy features of the Pulsar AS150. The bike also gets split grab rails and alloy foot rest mounts.

Verdict

The Bajaj Pulsar AS150 emerges as the new performance benchmark in its segment, like every new Pulsar in the history did. It has a fresh appeal, thanks to the Alpha Male semi faired styling; it is well equipped and has a capable perimeter frame. All in all, its a massive step up from the ageing Bajaj Pulsar 150 package which would continue to soldier on in a segment below.

The Bajaj Pulsar AS150 emerges as a new performance benchmark and is versatile. It’s strong on VFM too!

So if you’re looking for a versatile yet affordable motorcycle that can efficiently perform your daily commuting regime with an occasional escape out of the town, the new Pulsar AS150 is definitely a worthy candidate, especially considering the attractive introductory price tag of INR 79,000 ex-showroom.

Hero Motocorp in its first Indian Auto Expo after the split with Honda Motorcycle, showcased host of concept two wheelers, in the year 2014. Now when the next iteration of this biennial event has kick started, we found only HX 250 to be on stages and none of the other concepts like Zir, Hastur were present. Currently when the quarter liter motorcycle market is doing good, and especially when Karizma twins is loosing steam, company might be working on rolling out a production version of it. Bike looks nothing different than what we saw earlier, but still lucrative enough to retain people’s interest.

Hero HX 250R was one of the first products developed by the joint venture between Hero Motocorp and Erik Buell Racing team. Later on after number of speculations, the launch of this bike remained a rumor till date. Hero HX250R will be powered by a single cylinder, four stoke, liquid cooled engine, of 249 cc displacement, mated to a 6 speed gearbox. Power rating is expected to be in the vicinity of 31 bhp and peak torque, 26 Nm; good enough to put a healthy fight in the crowding competition.

If launched, this could take Honda CBR 250R head on. But company still seems to have mass market offerings on their priority list and hence this project backtracked. Every passing month, many manufacturers are launching a product in quarter liter segment. If company manages to turn this concept into a product which has comfortable ride and handling characteristics of Karizma and segment standard power output figures then there is nothing stopping this bike from writing success story. Right now all we can do is nothing but a indefinite wait.

Although the Japanese Toyota Priusis never mentioned by the Korean brand, it’s clear this is the car in Kia’s crosshairs – and it’s tackling it by packaging its new hybrid-only model in a more attractive and appealing crossover body.

The Niro is a massively important car for Kia, part of a plan to triple the number of eco-friendly models by 2020 and head towards a total of 22 ‘green’ models for Kia and it’s sister brand Hyundai by that time.

Under what is, in the flesh, an unexciting yet inoffensive and reasonably slippery (drag co-efficient of 0.29) skin, is a new platform especially developed for hybrid tech. It’s the same technology that’s also put to good use in the new Hyundai Ioniq.

It’ll get more use, too, with cars like the next generation Kia Soullikely to come as a full EV or hybrid. There’s also likely to be a plug-in hybrid version of next year’s Nissan Juke-rivalling SUV, while a plug-in version of the impressive new Optimasaloon shared the stage with the new Niro at this week’s Chicago Motor Show.

Just how green is the new Kia Niro?

The Niro’s headline figures of 89g/km and 73.6mpg may be some way off the new Prius’ 70g/km and 94mpg, but then the other important number, price, should be some way below the Toyota’s £23,295 starting figure. Kia is targeting a starting point of around £18,000.

For that money, you get some impressive tech. The Niro uses the very latest Lithium-Ion Polymer battery that is both compact and powerful – so much so that Kia has been able to do away with a 12v battery in the car. It lives under the rear seat so there’s no compromise on boot space and rear room.

Image 10 of 24

Kia has also developed its Predictive Energy Control system to use navigation data to predict changes to the road ahead (including hills) to maximise the efficiency of the hybrid system.

Kia Niro hybrid system in detail

That hybrid system comprises an all-new, super-efficient 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 102bhp. As well as being thermally very effective, it also uses exhaust gases to speed the warm-up process, improving efficiency in the early stages of a drive. A 42bhp electric motor is mounted on the transmission for a total combined power output of 144bhp with 195 lb ft of torque.

The power goes through a new six-speed dual clutch gearbox, which Kia claims gives a more connected driving experience than other hybrids with CVT continuously variable transmissions (but don’t mention the Prius!).

Image 6 of 24

Regenerative braking is used to send power back to the battery, but Kia says it’s paid special attention to brake feel, reducing the grabby nature of the brakes in other (still not named) hybrids.

Lots of work has gone into making the car as quiet as possible, too, using special glass, foams in the bodywork and specially shaped door mirrors to reduce noise. There’s even a damper in the steering system to reduce the vibration the driver might feel.

The compact battery and lack of a 12v power pack help to reduce weight, as do special lightweight seats and aluminium used for the bonnet, boot and suspension parts.

However, there will still be plenty of tech features on board including a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus safety features such as Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist; Advanced Smart Cruise Control; Lane Departure Warning; and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Image 9 of 24

As with the Hyundai Ioniq, a plug-in hybrid version of the Niro is a possibility, but not for a while – certainly some time after the arrival of the hybrid version, which Kia hopes to have in UK showrooms in time for the September plate change.

However, the brand’s first plug-in, the Optima, should arrive at around the same time with a claimed range of around 600 miles, 27 of which can be completed in full EV mode. It’ll feature tweaked aerodynamics to give it a class best drag coefficient of 0.24cd and it’ll come in one well-equipped trim level expected to cost around £30,000.

It's described as "bold and progressive" and features all the latest Kia design cues, such as the distinctive front grille, sharp lines and LED lights.

From a distance, it's not too different from the current Sportage, but a redesigned Tiger Nose front end, a more steeply raked windscreen and a sloping window line ensure the newest model looks fresh.

The broader shoulderline gives the car a more muscular look, while at the back, a new chrome strip links the redesigned light clusters. A metallic rear skidplate also appears, and there's liberal use of chrome for the exhausts, lower door trim and roof bars.

The Jaguar XE is the 2015 Auto Express Compact executive Car of the Year, with the BMW 3 Series and Lexus IS commended

For years Jaguar has been desperate to create a BMW 3 Series rival – and now it’s got one.

rival – and now it’s got one. In fact, the XEis more than a rival. It’s good enough to finally knock the German car off the top spot and take honours in the compact executive class.

Building on Jag’s success with the larger XFsaloon and combining this with stunning styling as seen on the F-Type, the XE represents what the brand does best. It’s a mix of cutting-edge tech, with its aluminium chassis and frugal diesel engines, and high-end luxury thanks to the sumptuous leather interior.

With a new family of Ingenium engines under the bonnet, the XE is a top performer, too. The 178bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel matched with Jag’s slick eight-speed auto is the combination of choice, with silky smooth power delivery and excellent refinement making it a great long-distance cruiser.

Image 6 of 8

The key to success in the compact exec sector is balancing attractive looks and strong performance with efficiency and usability. It’s here that the XE excels, with CO2 emissions as low as 99g/km from the lower-powered 161bhp Ingenium diesel.

While it’s a bit tight on the inside, this gives a typically Jaguar feeling of cocooned refinement. Passenger space is still good, though, plus there’s a generous luggage area, too, with a capacity of 455 litres. However, the real bonus inside is that the new car marks the debut of a new multimedia system, replacing the cumbersome low-resolution screen from the XF. It works fantastically well and helps cement victory for the XE.

A landmark moment for Jaguar.

Our choice

XE 2.0D 180 Auto R Sport (£34,775)

The extra styling add-ons for the R Sport model match BMW’s M Sport trim for visual presence, and despite the big wheels this version of the XE still rides smoothly. The R Sport comes generously equipped as standard as well, yet still promises
the kind of efficiency that’s competitive with the traditional class leaders.

BMW 3 Series facelift - Sport front tracking

In no way does this mean the BMW 3 Series is past its best. Last year’s champion has a great chassis and a varied engine line-up. Plus, with a new facelifted version (above) of the famous compact executive saloon on the way soon, we have a feeling that the XE could have a fight on its hands to retain its crown next year.

Lexus IS 300h - static

Lexus has stuck to its guns resolutely by not offering the IS with a diesel engine. A hybrid won’t suit everybody, but buyers won’t be disappointed with the Lexus’ effortless powertrain in IS 300h form and the low CO2 emissions it brings. Bold styling mixed with a practical, spacious interior means the IS covers many bases.

A four-wheel drive diesel option and new media system for the Jaguar XE saloon are part of 2016 model year revisions

Jaguar's XE saloon has only been in showrooms since April, but it's already receiving some tweaks for the 2016 model year.

saloon has only been in showrooms since April, but it's already receiving some tweaks for the 2016 model year. The BMW 3 Seriesrival gets an all-wheel drive option and a raft of new tech to keep it ahead of the class big hitters.

For the first time, buyers can opt for a part-time all-wheel drive system on their XE. It's available to order now, paired only (in the UK at least) with the higher-powered 178bhp 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel and eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. US-spec buyers can have an AWD 335bhp supercharged V6.

In normal driving conditions, power is sent only to the rear wheels to conserve fuel, but when the Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) detect a loss in traction, torque is then transferred to the front wheels in 165 milliseconds.

The AWD system adds 110kg of weight to the XE, reducing fuel economy in the diesel from 67.3mpg to 60.6mpg and upping CO 2 emissions from 109 to 123g/km.

Adaptive Surface Response is also added to all-wheel drive cars, remapping the engine and stability control according to the conditions. All XEs can now be ordered with Configurable Dynamics, allowing individual settings for throttle response, gearshift speed, and the adaptive dampers.

Jaguar is also now adding its new 10.2-inch InControl Touch Pro infotainment system to the options list, also found in the new XF. It's said to bring better response, improved graphics and new features, including intelligent navigation that tells others if you're running late, a WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices and Apple Watch connectivity.

Also added to the driver assistance cystem list are Lane Keep Assist, an Adaptive Speed Limiter and a Driver Condition Monitor. A 17-speaker, 825W Meridian Sound System is also on the options list.

The Audi TT is the 2015 Auto Express Coupe of the Year, with the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche Macan commended

The Audi TT is the 2015 Auto Express Coupe of the Year, with the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche Macan commended

Audi’s third-generation TT lives up to its predecessors’ billing as a style icon, but is more focused and better to drive than ever – which makes it our Coupé of the Year.

You can tell the TT’s special as soon as you see it. The combination of curves and creases creates a shape unlike anything else on the road, while the signature matrix LED lights complement the cutting-edge design.

The hi-tech feel continues at the wheel, thanks to the minimalist dash and impressive Virtual Cockpit. This comprises a 12.3-inch digital display, which shows the dials but also includes all other functions, from the sat-nav to the multimedia system and vehicle settings. That clears the dash of many buttons, leaving only a few essential switches, the climate controls integrated into the air vents and the intuitive MMI controller to navigate the Virtual Cockpit.

Image 6 of 8

While the TT’s a study in design, a focused drive backs it up. Whichever one you go for, lightweight construction – it features the same MQB platform as the latest VW Golfand SEAT Leon– helps deliver entertaining handling, and the punchy petrols and diesels are as economical as they are fast.

At the top of the range, the TTShas immense grip thanks to its standard quattro 4WD, while adaptive dampers make the most of the nimble chassis. Combine this sharp handling with rocketship acceleration from the 306bhp 2.0-litre turbo, and it’s one of the most entertaining drivers’ cars Audihas ever produced.

Our choice

TT 2.0 TFSI Sport (£29,915)

Keep it simple – the Audi TT Coupé is a great all-rounder, with plenty of performance, decent refinement and reasonable economy, too. What’s more, that stylish hatchback tailgate opens to reveal a surprisingly practical luggage area.

Jaguar F-Type R AWD Coupe- front tracking

Last year’s winner is still at the top of its game, thanks to its catwalk-fresh looks and a range of punchy engines. And the Jaguar coupé has been made even more attractive thanks to a manual transmission option and four-wheel drive to give added security to the F-Type’s already-eager handling.

Porsche Cayman - front tracking

The Cayman is still one of the best all-round sports cars you can buy at any price. In both GTS and new GT4 guises it’s nipping at the heels of the bigger 911 for performance, yet even the standard model will put a smile on your face thanks to its beautifully balanced mid-engined layout and throaty flat-six.

We speak to the driver responsible for the record-breaking lap of the Nurburgring in Renaultsport's Megane 275 Trophy-R

We speak to the driver responsible for the record-breaking lap of the Nurburgring in Renaultsport's Megane 275 Trophy-R

Renault's Renaultsport Megane 275 Trophy-R, has claimed the front-wheel-drive Nurburgring lap record with a time of 7 minutes, 54.36 seconds, beating the previous record held by the SEAT Leon Cupra – by 4.04 seconds.

– by 4.04 seconds. We interview the man behind the wheel for the record-breaking lap, Renaulttest driver Laurent Hurgon...

Why is the Trophy-R 14 seconds per lap faster than the 265 Trophy in 2011?

“The big different is the tyres, plus the shocks and dampers from Ohlins are very good too. It gives you full adjustability of the car so if you want understeer or oversteer you can have it. Personally I adjusted it for a very neutral feel in the corners, but really it’s the tyres, dampers and the weight savings that make the big difference.”

Do you think you could go any faster in the Trophy-R?

“I think as a driver there’s always places you can go quicker, there were slippery patches out on the track, but I think it was a very good lap. You can always be better, but then you can always be worse. On the Nordschleife though there is no limit, if you have more power you can definitely set a faster time. But for every 5kph faster you go each curve is not the same and you might need to change the whole setup of the car.”

Honda has said it wants to steal the front-wheel drive lap record with the new Type R, have you seen it testing on the track?

“Yes I have seen it on the track – we have industry pool days where everybody brings their cars to test. I can’t say how fast they are compared to us but I hope they can go faster, then hopefully Renaultsport can do something more to try and beat them again.”

It must feel good to steal the record back from the SEAT Leon Cupra so soon after they posted it?

“It is just a coincidence about the timing of SEAT’s record lap. We’ve been working on this programme for a year and a half – we were definitely surprised about the SEAT time attack. But something like this is good for team spirit.”

What advice would you give to someone who hasn’t driven the Nurburgring, but wants to come and give it a go?

“Take it slowly to begin with – there are so many blind curves that could go left or right – and it’s better to do a lap with someone who know the track first. If a formula one driver came here for the first time he would probably be 30 or 40 seconds slower than me, because it’s all about getting to know the corners.”

New flagship SEAT Leon Cupra outmuscles VW Golf GTI with an incredible 276bhp

New flagship SEAT Leon Cupra outmuscles VW Golf GTI with an incredible 276bhp

Last year saw a bumper crop of new hot hatches, from the VW Golf GTI to the Ford Fiesta ST – but the SEAT Leon Cupra is set to blow them all away.

The new SEATLeon Cupra has been revealed, and it packs quite a punch.

– but the SEAT Leon Cupra is set to blow them all away. Based on similar mechanicals to the 217bhp Golf GTI, it delivers up to 276bhp from its 2.0-litre turbo.

The Cupra will make its public debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show, and provides a choice of power outputs. There’s 261bhp in the manual three-door SC, or 276bhp in the three-door DSG auto plus the manual and auto five-doors, all badged Cupra 280.

The 261bhp three-door covers 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds, while the Cupra 280s take 5.7 seconds. All versions hit an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

The three-door Cupra is £435 cheaper than the equivalent Golf GTI, at £25,690, but has a limited-slip front differential and adaptive dampers as standard. These work with the 44bhp power advantage to ensure the Leon is over half a second quicker from 0-62mph.

SEAT Leon Cupra performance

The 276bhp five-door comes with bigger 19-inch alloys, high-performance Brembo brakes and a set of stickier, track-focused tyres. Even with a six-speed DSG auto, the Cupra 280 undercuts the Golf GTI Performance Pack by £650, at just £28,525, and order books are open now.

SEAT has hinted that the new Cupra 280 has already lapped Germany’s Nürburgring race track “significantly quicker” than the Renault Megane RS265, which would make it the fastest front-wheel-drive hot hatch ever. The ESC system has been revised so that it can be partly disabled or fully turned off for truly hardcore drivers with an eye on track days.

Adaptive dampers, fine-tuned specifically for the Cupra, have a choice of three modes, while a ‘Cupra Drive Profile’ will let owners tailor various mechanical settings to suit their tastes.

Yet although there has been a huge increase in performance and spec, the design isn’t too ‘in your face’. Wide front air intakes, a low front bumper and swollen wheelarches are all present, but bosses have told us SEAT is keen to avoid being tarnished with a “boy racer” image. At the back, two oval exhausts and subtle chequered flag badges are the only clues to the searing pace. Instead, the company claims the new Cupra is an “elegant” car that can be used more as a “day-to-day” driver than ever before.

Even so, for buyers who do want more extrovert visuals from their hot hatch, SEAT will sell a limited-edition launch version with looks inspired by the Leon Cup Racer, offering coloured alloys, contrasting mirrors and a two-tone interior design.

All models come with full LED headlights, DAB radio, rain-sensing headlights and auto wipers as standard, while the Cupra 280 adds a rear spoiler, gloss black mirror caps, red brake calipers and sat-nav. Inside, the new model sticks closely to the blueprint laid down by the sporty Leon FR, although a flat-bottomed steering wheel, LED ambient lighting and Alcantara-trimmed seats add a sense of drama.

Yet despite the mind-blowing pace, the car will be impressively efficient. Every model has stop-start, and manual versions claim 44.1mpg and 149g/km emissions – 41g/km less than the old Cupra – regardless of power output.

The British-built MINI is Auto Express' Car of the Year 2014

The British-built MINI is Auto Express' Car of the Year 2014

It’s been a British institution for nearly six decades, but this is the first time it has lifted the coveted Auto Express Car of the Year award.

It’s been a British institution for nearly six decades, but this is the first time it has lifted the coveted Auto Express Car of the Year award. The MINIis now in its third generation since its rebirth as a classy premium supermini in 2001, and it’s better than ever.

Like its predecessors, the new car has the cheeky looks, classy cabin and fun driving experience we’ve come to expect. But it combines this with a new found sophistication and an array of gadgets aimed at making you safer and more comfortable.

By taking advantage of the extensive technological know-how of parent firm BMW, MINI has been able give its baby a grown-up feel that’s unrivalled in the supermini class. For the first time ever, the British machine boasts the sort of comfort and refinement that makes light work of long motorway marathons. And the optional adaptive dampers smooth out bumps that would have sent shockwaves through the old car.

MINI Cooper S

Then there’s the huge array of safety aids – normally reserved for executive models that cost thousands more. A head-up display, forward collision alert and adaptive cruise control are all available. Happily, none of these additions comes at the expense of the MINI’s appetite for entertainment – this is a car that constantly encourages you to seek out the long way home.

Take a look at the line-up and you’ll find there’s a MINI to suit all tastes and budgets, from the entry-level One through to the fuel-sipping Cooper Dand the rapid Cooper S. And as always, the almost endless list of personalisation options means you can create a MINI that’s unique to you.

The bad news for rivals is that this is just the beginning for the iconic brand. MINI is planning a wave of spin-off models, including a practical five-door that makes its debut later this year. So don’t be surprised if the MINI success story rolls on into 2015.

On a twisting B-road, the Cupra delivers huge grip and razor-sharp handling, especially when you select Cupra mode from the Drive Profile system.

There are more powerful rivals, and there are opponents that are more focused to drive, but none can match the all-round ability of SEAT’s Leon Cupra.

On a twisting B-road, the Cupra delivers huge grip and razor-sharp handling, especially when you select Cupra mode from the Drive Profile system. The standard adaptive dampers adjust to road conditions, while the Leon’s engaging chassis has been stiffened to deliver an even more focused drive. An electronically controlled limited-slip diff helps to put the 276bhp 2.0-litre turbo engine’s power down, and the lack of understeer in corners is astounding for such a powerful front-drive car.

Add in responsive steering and a rasping exhaust note in Cupra mode, and the Leonis a blast to drive fast. But the best hot hatch needs to be a master of many talents to shine, and selecting Comfort mode transforms the Cupra into a docile family car. And standard-fit stop/start helps to save fuel ready for the next B-road blast.

What’s more, the Leon doesn’t shout about its performance. SEATdoes offer some colour packs to help the car stand out, but if you’d rather go incognito, then 19-inch alloys and subtle Cupra badging are the only giveaways to its potential.

And unlike many hot hatch rivals, there’s a Cupra to suit all occasions. The three-door SC will appeal to those with an eye for style, the five-door hatch is a fine all-rounder, while the ST estatecan keep pace with the fastest of growing families.

Our choice

Leon SC Cupra 280 (£27,910)

The three-door Leon Cupra is our pick, as the slightly sharper lines suit the hot hatch better than the five-door or estate models. You can get a DSG automatic gearbox, but while it adds launch control, we think the six-speed manual version is more engaging to drive.

Commended

Ford Fiesta ST Mountune - front cornering

The Fiesta ST has managed to fend off a slew of new arrivals to keep its crown as the best supermini hot hatch. Its great-value price tag and massively entertaining chassis mean it could be all the car you’d ever need, while upgrading to the Mountune performance kit is money well spent.

Volkswagen Golf GTI cornering

The car that started the hot hatch phenomenon is still a great choice for those drivers wanting a high-quality performance model that can keep them entertained and has a real feelgood factor about it. Stick with the tartan cloth trim and manual gearbox with its golf ball gearlever, while adding the Performance Pack is a wise move.

Skoda has released sketches of a booted rally car concept that wiill be unveiled at Worthersee GTI Meeting

Skoda has just revealed design sketches of a new Fabia rally car with a difference.

rally car with a difference. The firm's latest roomy estatehas been given the R5 rally treatment, and will be shown at this year's Worthersee GTI Meeting in Austria alongside the Funstar pick-up.

The Fabia R5 Combi has been built as just a show car for now, but the time and expense of doing so suggests there might be plans to see it storming the mud on rally stages in the near future. It's also built to showcase Skoda's recent rallying success, as the new R5 car won its debut rally in the Czech Republic.

The load-lugger gets the same sporting treatment as the hatch, with a green, white and black paint scheme. The oversized wheels in the sketches will be toned down to 18-inch items, and additional air intakes feature. That purposeful rear wing sits over the boot, and there's a centrally-mounted exhaust.

It's powered by the regulation 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with all-wheel drive, and a five-speed sequential transmission. The Fabia R5 Combi will be unveiled on the 13th of May at the historic VW-Group-based event.

Skoda is planning to add plug-in hybrid power to the Superb in 2019, with an all-electric car to follow

Skoda is planning to add plug-in hybrid power to the Superb in 2019, with an all-electric car to follow

The Skoda Superb is set to be the first car in the Czech brand's range to get plug-in hybrid power, following the reveal of the part-electric VisionS concept car at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Skodaboss Bernhard Maier told us "hybrids are something we are discussing for all of our product line-up - in the years to come there will be a transition phase. We strongly believe that a big number of our customers will be dependent on normal engines as well but the plug-in hybrid solution, starting with the Superb in 2019, is our plan - but there will be other models as well."

Skoda's new Kodiaq large SUV is an obvious candidate, given the hybrid powertrain in the VisionS concept it is based on, but with the VWGroup's push for electric power arising from the dieselgate scandalin 2015 the Skoda range is set to host many new models with petrol-electric powertrains.

Skoda Vision S Concept official - front

The new Superb, which is based on the MQB platform, is already set up for electric power - VW has already launched the Passat GTE, and the Superb could use the same 1.4-litre petrol and electric motor set-up, which produces 215bhp with economy of over 150mpg.

Speaking at Skoda's annual press conference, Skoda bosses also confirmed that a new all-electric model is on the way. At the moment, though, Skoda is sticking with hybrid power for the Superb. Maier told us: "We think that the market for [the Superb hybrid] is quite strong and that it's the best way to start."

One of the trade-offs with hybrid power is the large battery packs that are needed for the electric motors, which are at odds with Skoda's focus on practicality. "Our engineers are working to find the best solution for Skoda for hybrid technology. Whatever Skoda brings we will stand to our core values, irrespective of the engine we are looking at," Maier said.

Skoda's first plug-in hybrid will arrive in 2019, as part of the brand's 'Strategy 2025' expansion plans over the next decade.

The Ford Escape is the sister car to the European Kuga, and a facelift may preview changes for the Kuga

The Ford Escape is the sister car to the European Kuga, and a facelift may preview changes for the Kuga

The Ford Escape is an unfamiliar name in the UK, but it's not an unfamiliar car.

The Ford Escape is an unfamiliar name in the UK, but it's not an unfamiliar car. It's in fact a Ford Kuga, renamed for the American market – and the updated version unveiled at the LA Motor Showmay preview what the Kuga will look like when it gets its own makeover.

The chunky SUV styling receives a bolder face, with a big hexagonal grille in contrast to the Kuga's slightly anonymous front end. Bolder headlamps and reshaped front and rear bumpers bring it in line with the fresher Ford Edge.

Inside, changes are more minimal, but there's a new electronic handbrake to replace the conventional one as well as some tweaks to the equipment list – adaptive cruise control and park assist have been added. The SYNC infotainment system is updated to SYNC 3, which Ford claims is faster and more responsive than the current system. It will also provide a smartphone app called Sync Connect that allows owners to remotely monitor their vehicle, lock and unlock doors and start the engine.

As it's for the US market, the Escape doesn't feature the diesel engines we get in Europe – so it's available with the same 1.5 and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrols seen in the UK model, as well as a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre model. If it comes to the UK we'd expect to see updated versions of the 2.0-litre TDCi diesels that make up the majority of the sales.

Ford's 'One Ford' policy suggests that the European Kuga will be set for a very similar update. The policy means that a single model is sold across the world, with very few changes for the region it's sold in – a British Ford Fiestais much the same as a Malaysian one, for example.

We don't expect these changes to arrive on the Kuga until 2017, and when they arrive they will form a mid-life facelift.
