The company was co-founded by a few graduates from IIT Madras and has received US $13 million in funding. They received US $12 million from Tiger Global and US $1 million from Flipkart founders Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal. The S340 is their very first product.

“The future will be connected and inevitably electric and the Ather S340 has been built as a manifestation of this philosophy,” said Tarun Mehta, CEO & Co-Founder. “It is an unapologetically electric vehicle. It has been designed and built mostly in-house with engineering precision.”

Designed by Ather from the scratch, the S340 will be the first electric scooter to be completely developed and manufactured in India and will also be one of the first connected vehicles in the country. It is based on a lightweight aluminium chassis and is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. It has a top speed of 75 kmph and a range of around 60 kms. It takes 50 minutes to charge the batteries to 80%.

The S340 comes equipped with loads of new features like a digital touchscreen dashboard. The smart dashboard will help riders create personalised profiles, choose different riding modes and set other ride preferences. The vehicles data is logged in and is continuously monitored. It also comes with onboard navigation.

A manufacturing unit is in the process of being set up in Bangalore and production will commence by the end of the year. The electric smart scooter will go on sale in Bangalore, Chennai and Pune. Sales of the vehicle will happen online and there will be a doorstep delivery and service, thus eliminating the need for dealer outlets and service centres.
